We rescued this baby yesterday. Actually the credit goes to the gentleman who saw a man toss a kitten into a dumpster and walk away. The gentleman walked over and scooped the kitten out and brought her to our sanctuary. We have at least a temporary spot for her. She was scared, filthy and hungry, and it looks like she has an eye infection. The man who saved her was very appreciative; he was not able to keep her but asked if we could name her after one of his grandchildren. 🥹 So, meet SOPHIA. After a nice bath and a clean comfy enclosure set up, Sophia must have realized she was SAFE. She ate her lunch with gusto and settled into her new “home” for a good long, deep sleep. Did we have room for Sophia today? We made room, yes, but we desperately need more FOSTERS of all kinds, whether short or long term, for kittens or cats. Ruby (torbie) 🐱and Jasper (ginger boy) 🐱are brother and sister, dropped off at South LA Shelter in June when they were just six weeks old. They arrived underweight, flea ridden and had upper respiratory infections. They needed OUT of the shelter asap. We rescued them as soon as the shelter put out the alert, and ever since then, they have flourished. Now four months old, they are confident, sweet, loving, playful best friends. They get along with everyone—people, dogs and other cats. Their only requirement——they are bonded and must stay together. 🧡❤️They have been through the worst together and now are ready to share the best in a forever home. Sometimes we make a “love connection” at Sunday clinic. 🧡😻🖤Yesterday, a first time foster visited the clinic with a very feisty 2 month old solo orange kitten. He explained this kitten was very active and he wished the kitten had a playmate to absorb some of that wild kitten energy. Well, as luck would have it, there was another similarly sized gray kitten right there in line—and so they went home TOGETHER with the foster! 👏👏Here our sanctuary medical director, Ben Lehrer assesses each kitten and advised the foster. Kittens learn from each other and particularly learn the boundaries of play fighting from each another- humans are no substitute! Well, it happened again. 🐈⬛🐈⬛As one of our volunteers was walking out to her car yesterday, she happened to see a big shoe box with tiny holes in it outside our building. Two black kittens were just starting to move the lid and crawl out when she was fortunately able to grab them both. We named them Ash and Amber and they are safely in an enclosure in our intake room. 🙀 The person who dropped them off left a kind, heartfelt note about the circumstances leading up to this event, and we understand. But the action put them in the greatest danger they had been in in their entire lives. They were moments away from escaping into a busy neighborhood with a lot of traffic and to go hungry while facing prey and other dangers. These two were incredibly lucky but we don’t know how many others were not so lucky. It is heartbreaking. Let’s get Stormy a home! We rescued this kitty in late July when she was on the “end of day” euthanasia list at the shelter, due to having an upper respiratory infection. Since that time, Stormy has shown herself to be a sweet, affectionate cat who is happiest when she can curl up on your lap and purr. Stormy is great with people and with other cats. Her other outstanding features are her petite stature, her big soulful eyes and shiny grey coat. And those expressions!🥹

Rescued!
Early yesterday morning we got the shelter alert that 5 abandoned, sick kittens had been dropped off and were now on the “end of day” euthanasia list. ❗️They needed rescue ASAP! Could we make room for 5 more? Well, with a few adjustments…we said YES. Next, we put out the call for a volunteer to drive to East Valley Shelter with a big sturdy carrier and provide their life saving freedom ride to our Sanctuary in Atwater Village. Guess who immediately says yes? Nelli! 🙋♀️The kittens arrived late morning, and got set up in their enclosure. We’re not gonna lie—they look rough! They at least have upper respiratory infections and time will tell. But one thing we can promise. They will be safe, well cared for and given their best chance at a good life! Violet
VIOLET DESERVES A HOME! This two year adorable ball of fluff came to us in the saddest way—she was abandoned in a carrier left outside our Sanctuary. 😔 We took her in and then we fell in love. 💕Violet is the sweetest, most affectionate kitty —— until the sass kicks in!! Yes, she can be a bit temperamental. The multi-cat environment she’s been living in is definitely not ideal for her so she protects herself and her territory by “love swats” to people and cats ! She is beautiful and so deserves a forever home of her own. She will need to be the “only” cat—no other cats or dogs in the home. We are proud to introduce Juanito, a working cat who lives at the Paperback Brewery in Glendale! 🐈⬛This handsome dude was pulled from the shelter by Kitten Rescue and when he made it clear he was no “house cat” so we got him a working cat (lifetime) gig at the Brewery, along with another shelter cat pal. 🍺Well, all was beer and roses until Juanito injured his leg! (Honestly it is hard to pin him down on the details as to whether it was during company time or on his off hours), 🤔but his devoted humans got him right to a vet. He was diagnosed with a broken bone in his foot. Let’s just say, he’ll be “off work” for a bit ! This is the story of Leo, 🦁a seven year old, 15 1/2 pound tabby. His story is both unique and yet so much like the tales we hear every day at Kitten Rescue. Leo was found roaming near Union Station recently, and the family who found him wanted to keep him. They took him to the vet for a wellness exam, and though he was perfectly healthy, he also had tested positive for FIV. When the family got that result, they decided they did not want to risk exposing their other cat to FIV and so they surrendered him to the shelter. 😔
Sadly, the shelter is no place for a cat who tests positive for FeLV or FIV, though these are eminently manageable findings. Leo had exactly two weeks to get adopted or fostered, or he would be euthanized on August 20. 😥
The shelter meanwhile, put out desperate alerts and Kitten Rescue answered the call! 🥰 While we face the daily challenge of rescuing kittens born on the streets, we cannot ignore calls for help for older cats. Kitten Rescue pulled Leo from the shelter and found the perfect foster home for him. 👉So, here is Leo before: (yes, a stoic handsome but worried cat per his photo at the shelter), and here is Leo two weeks later, relaxing and enjoying a cat nip party at his foster family’s home. 😻😻
