The story: One of our recent shelter pulls, Opal, surprised us all when we found 9 newborn babies nested in her hidey box. Well it wasn’t that much of a surprise. Opal came to us as another bunny that was given only a day to be pulled from the city shelter or she’d be euthanized. She had already been nesting at that point, but the shelter attributed the hair loss to a health condition. So BunnyLuv pulled her only to find that the hair loss was her being a great mom and building a nest. More often than not, however, unspayed bunnies will go through a false pregnancy, and Opal was not showing that she was carrying 9 babies. But we let her do her thing, making sure not to disturb her lovely nest work of hay in her hidey box. Then one morning we noticed she had piled in A LOT of fur to her nest. Lo and behold, tucked underneath were 9, surprisingly large baby buns!
