Do fireworks make your dog anxious? Treadmill exercise in the early evening can be a really effective way to drain both mental and physical energy. When you are mentally and physically exhausted what do you do? Pass out! And that’s exactly what our dogs do every 4th of July, even while the backyard lights up from the flashes directly overhead and the house reverberates with each boom.

Hey everyone! Been super busy with training this year and haven't had much time for social media posts. It's just me these days, trying to run the whole show, so I've had to cut back on the updates (sorry!). But here's a quick before/after clip of one of the dogs I worked with this month.

This dog had just completed his 6-lesson VIRTUAL e-collar training package (everything was taught via Zoom) and the owner wanted to do an in-person lesson to get some touch-up help and really challenge him.

Hope it provides inspiration as to the changes that are possible for those struggling with dogs that seem beyond help!

"Yes, we CAN all just get along!" - the dogs

Is it just me or is there just way too much animosity and general negativity going around on fb lately? How about a cute photo of happy dogs enjoying an adventure together to cheer up your Friday and motivate you for the weekend! 😊 Have a great weekend, everyone! And please remember to be kind to one another. 💗

Is your dog crate trained?

All dogs, from puppies to seniors, can benefit from being properly crate trained. Your dog should see their crate as their safe space, it will give them a sense of security, and when properly trained, your dog will love their crate.

What are the benefits of crate training? Where do I begin?
• For puppies, crate training will help with housebreaking as most dogs don’t want to potty where they sleep. It can also teach puppies to expect and enjoy down time.
•For senior dogs, it can provide a quiet and safe space they may be looking for, especially in homes with kids or multiple dogs.
• For all dogs, young or old, crate training can provide a sense of structure and security craved by all dogs. This is particularly important for rescue dogs or any dog prone to anxiety!

When should you crate your dog?
• Whenever you cant directly supervise them, especially if they’re puppies or new to your home.
• When you’re not home.
• When they need some down time.
• During separation training (more on this tomorrow!)

There are lots of free videos online demonstrating how to crate train your dog but if you need help, we're here for you!

Virtual lessons are currently discounted through the end of May and you're always welcome to book a totally FREE 15-min phone consult on our website!

Say hello to Molly, a Pet Peeves Training alumni, practicing her place command. Her humans will be going back to work soon and want to minimize the stress this transition might cause her.

What is place command?

Place is essentially an enforced down/stay on a dog bed or cot until released, regardless of what happens around them (including you disappearing out of sight for a while).

How can place command help with separation anxiety?

As territorial pack animals, dogs derive comfort from knowing WHERE to be. They also get comfort from having a job. Place command gives them both of these. When place is enforced properly the dog's mind eases into acceptance and relaxation. It's basically like doggie meditation and has a very therapeutic effect as they learn to let life happen around them without needing to take action over every little thing (the mail delivery, the cat running by, your disappearance into another room).

The greatest benefit of place command, however, is the way it helps dogs to develop better impulse control and healthy coping skills. Practicing place helps dogs learn how to handle situations of not being allowed to have what they want when they want it how they want it. This is EXACTLY what they're going to be experiencing when you go back to work and they don’t want to be left alone.

Healthy coping ability is something most of us are guilty of failing to teach our dogs and one of the simplest things we can do differently to improve their lives significantly. By the way, the more we spoil our dogs, the more our dogs are going to need strong coping skills for the days ahead. So let's get started!

Place command pros: How many dogs out there already know place? Show off your pup pics!

There are ample free videos out there demonstrating how to teach place command but if you need help, we're here for you!
