Excellent advice.

Showing your child how to handle the family cat will keep them both safe. Explain that cats do not feel safe when “big people” suddenly pick them up. If age-appropriate, show them the proper way to pick up and hold your cat with their arm under the cat’s bottom. Explain that this should only be done when you are there to supervise. This is why it's a very bad idea to put pet food outdoors. We don't want to encourage raccoons (or opossums, which often carry typhus) to hang out around our homes, leaving f***s and these parasites where humans can get infected with them.

At some point fairly recently our voicemail stopped playing our clinic's outgoing greeting, and instead started playing only "402 is not available. Please record your message." 402 is the number assigned to the main incoming phone unit.

I only became aware of this (additional) glitch yesterday, and it took quite a while to figure out how to get my actual custom-recorded greeting to play. It finally worked.

If you get that 402 nonsense again, when you leave your message please remember to alert us to the problem.

Sigh. Technology. Can't live with it, can't live without it.

We now have in stock the new monthly injectable medication for arthritis pain in cats: Solensia. It must be administered by a veterinarian in the clinical setting due to its potential risk to early fetal development and in certain serious medical conditions.

If you think your cat might benefit from this great new product, call to schedule an appointment for evaluation and, if indicated, a two-dose/two-month trial to see how your cat does on it.

The first and only FDA-approved treatment to control osteoarthritis pain in cats.

We have exciting news! After three decades of hiatus, we're offering housecalls again, with some caveats.

Housecalls are available for tame domestic cats only - it's not that I don't like dogs, it's just that I haven't treated/handled canine patients for 33 years, so rusty doesn't begin to describe me. And treating wild ferals isn't feasible or safe in the home setting.

This service will be available outside of normal office hours, with rare exceptions. And due to time/traffic issues, we will be serving only the SW San Fernando Valley, west of the 405 and south of Sherman Way. The housecall fee will be proportionate to distance/time to client's home.

By their very nature, housecalls are best suited for routine annual checkups/vaccinations, minor medical care, and euthanasia. It's not possible to load up an entire clinic into my vehicle.

So we'll start making appointments for housecalls as early as next week. Can't wait to start back into this aspect of practice

When you're done watching the eclipse coverage, remember to call to make your cat's overdue annual checkup appointment (you know who you are, lol).

Stay safe out there!

Update: Well that was fast! We're up and off to the races again.

~~~~~~
Sigh. Our internet and so of course our internet-based phones are down again this morning. There may have been a power surge or outage due to the wind, as our battery backup surge protector had shut itself off.
With that up and running again, we are now working with Spectrum to see what else might be going on.
02/19/2024
I forgot V-Day.
Later Taters!
02/19/2024
It's another one of my new favorite days: a Monday federal holiday! So we are of course closed. We'll be open tomorrow, normal hours.
I celebrated with a big mug of homemade hot cocoa and a spinach and cheese omelet instead of the hasty cuppa joe before appointments. Hope you and your feline friends are settling in for a cozy, lazy day and watching the rain from safety inside.
02/05/2024
Looks like internet and phones are back in service. Yay!
02/05/2024
It's been raining cats and more cats for a few days now, so I suppose it was inevitable - our internet is down for the count in a major local service failure. Spectrum is "working on it", with the disturbing caveat that said work will commence when conditions are safe to do so.
Unfortunately, that means the clinic phones are down, too. The big drawback of VOIP systems.
But you can message us here in the meantime.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. I've been dealing with vaccine hesitancy since I first entered practice in 1982. And it still baffles me.
I've seen rabies, up close and very personal. That experience turned me into a bit of a fanatic about rabies vaccination in cats. But my efforts don't do much to counter the vaccine ignorance among my own colleagues (yes, you read that correctly), which is still an appalling problem.
We have rabies all the time in Los Angeles County in our local bat population. Bats with rabies are found inside local homes with regularity. There is no valid reason to avoid rabies vaccination in cats (or dogs).
Public health experts and veterinarians are concerned about the potential for an increase in cases of rabies, a vaccine-preventable illness, for both companion animals and humans.
Use caution with Halloween cat costumes. Not all cats want to dress up, so your safest choice for a costume is a small, loosely tied bandanna or festive collar. It’s essential your cat’s vision, breathing, and movement are not restricted. For more Halloween safety tips, visit https://bit.ly/3VgweYF.
Baybie Graybie has finished his kitten vaccinations and is about as well-trained in cat manners as Markie can get him (because Markie is a bit nutty, as we know), so it's time to get him a forever home. He's approaching 5 months old and is going to be a big boy - he's already 6 1/2 lb! Full of kitten energy and turning into a loving lap cat, too.
He's a gray (of course) DMH and very handsome. He must go to a home that will ensure he is 100% indoors, and it's best that he have a feline companion in the home, though a dog would work, too.
If you're interested, please message here or call us. Bonus consideration given to an existing client. Scroll down for a pic of him (with Markie) on the only day he has ever held still, lol.
Boo!
It's that time of year again. Keep the kitties indoors, and don't let them play with decorations, especially stringy or threadlike.
And please don't give them candy or other human food treats. I think I saw some Halloween-themed Temptations treats recently, and those are fine.
To help ensure your pets' health and safety on what can be a very spooky day for them, the AVMA has put together a list of things you can do to make Halloween safer for your pet. In addition, we have printable handouts on Halloween pet safety that AVMA members can share with their clients. .
There is a new drug on the market for management of feline osteoarthritis pain. It sounds like a major breakthrough
We're going to be offering this monthly injection very soon and hope that lots of our patients will be getting back to their "normal" soon.
Here's the Zoetis website with lots information for kitty parents:
While cat bite abscesses are one of my favorite things to treat, I do think it's best to keep your cat indoors here in Los Angeles. And if they do go outdoors and come home with a bite wound, we need to treat very quickly (cheaper) to avoid abscess development (much more expensive).
Q: I adopted a feral cat, and I cannot make him an indoor cat, but he seems to do well being able to go in and out of the house.
Our Story
We are a cat hospital - services include wellness exams, preventive care, medical care and surgery (including but not limited to spays and neuters). We are located halfway between Winnetka and Corbin on the north side of the street, right across from Wells Fargo.
Office hours are 8-6 M-F and 8-1 Sat. We are always closed on Sundays and major holidays. As a one-doctor practice, our ability to take walk-ins is limited, so please be sure to call for an appointment.
Cat’s Meow Veterinary Clinic opened in May 1991 with the goal of providing medical care for cats in a safe, quiet, comfortable environment free of stressors commonly found in practices that also treat dogs. So we do not treat dogs or exotic animals.
While we love cats and wish we could take in and save them all, we are not a rescue organization and do not, with only occasional exception, take in strays or find homes for unwanted cats.
