If you’ve ever brought your pet in for a routine check-up or illness, chances are the veterinarian has wanted to start with “blood work”, also known as a blood screening or blood panel. That’s because just like in humans, the cells and chemicals present in your pet’s blood can give the doctor a wealth of clues about what’s happening in various organs of the body.

Once a blood sample is drawn, veterinarians will usually request a Complete Blood Count (CBC) and then a chemistry panel specific to your pet’s needs, such as a liver panel, an electrolyte panel, a geriatric panel, or a pre-surgical panel. The CBC is a snapshot of the red and white cells in your pet’s blood and can reveal many conditions, like whether he or she is anemic, dehydrated, or has an active infection. A panel is comprised of several different tests and can give more specific information related to a diagnosis. These panels can also be helpful in determining the possible progression of a disease.

Animals tend to be stoic when it comes to pain and are unable to verbalize their symptoms, so blood work is vital to determining a diagnosis and assessing your pet’s overall health.

Kidney Disease is Serious for Pets
Did you know that kidney disease is the #1 cause of death in cats over 10? Or that nine out of every 1000 dogs examined suffer from kidney disease?
It’s important families be aware of the symptoms of kidney (renal) disease.

A visit to the vet is warranted if you notice your pet drinking more water and urinating more than usual. Weight loss, lethargy, vomiting/diarrhea and bad breath with an ammonia-like odor are also symptoms.

Symptoms of renal failure can come on gradually, but the condition is serious and the sooner it’s caught, the sooner you and your vet can take steps to slow the progression. Even though it is most common in older animals, renal disease and dysfunction can happen at any age.

Treatment often includes a diet with less protein and phosphorus, with an emphasis on high-quality protein sources.

If you have questions about kidney disease or your pet is showing any of the symptoms above, don’t hesitate to give us a call at (818) 766-2140.

This month is National Pet Dental Health Month, which was started to encourage pet owners to be proactive about their pets’ dental health. Without routine dental care, pets develop periodontal disease, which causes smelly breath, infected gums and tooth loss. At its later stages, it can even spread infection to the kidneys, liver and heart. Keep your pets’ teeth healthy by scheduling their annual dental cleanings and brushing their teeth at home!

Herschel came in today for a Librela injection, this is just a part of helping him feel and stay strong. Can you believe this sweet boy is 16 years old!

Have you heard about Librela? This monoclonal antibody injection for treating osteoarthritis pain in dogs is a game changer. Just one injection a month can free dogs from OA pain. Unlike many NSAIDs, Librela is metabolized with minimal involvement of the kidneys or liver—which makes it a great choice for dogs who are not good candidates for NSAIDs due to reduced organ function.

While you spend the holiday with your sweetheart, make sure your other love—your pet!—is safe.

Hide that heart-shaped box of chocolates! Because it contains caffeine and theobromine, chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea, seizures and even death when pets ingest it.

Pets love stuffed toys, so make sure the big teddy bear you receive from your love doesn’t have any small parts—like plastic eyes or noses—that pets could remove and swallow.

If you live with cats, don’t bring home any lilies! Lilies contain a toxin that causes rapid kidney failure in cats. Also, those long-stemmed roses may look romantic, but their thorns can scratch nosy paws and faces, so it’s best to keep all vases up high.

Alcohol can cause blood sugar and blood pressure to drop to dangerously low levels. Keep wine glasses and beer bottles out of reach at all times

Don’t leave candles burning unattended around your pets. Not only can candles singe tails, pets can also easily knock them over and cause even bigger fiery problems.

January is Train Your Dog Month

Oh Behave!
If you’re looking to start the new year off on the right paw with your pet, here are a few basic training strategies to help you both have a better new year.

Got a problem barker? It’s a pretty common issue, but you’ve got to be consistent and patient if you want to make it stop. First, yelling back at your dog just makes him think you’re joining in on the fun. Instead. Calmly say “Quiet!” and reward your pet when he stops barking. It might take him a while to get it, but eventually most dogs do.

Does your dog walk you? Leash-pulling not only ruins walks, but it can be dangerous for both you and your pooch. Start by playing “follow me” with your dog: While holding the leash, take a few steps backward and when the dog turns and follows you, say “yes!” and immediately reward her. There are many types of corrective harnesses available to help with this problem–it’s just a matter of finding the one that is right for your dog.

Is your dog hyperactive and unruly? Chances are he or she isn’t getting enough exercise and/or mental stimulation. When you adopt a pet, it’s crucial to choose one that fits your lifestyle in terms of energy and time. Puppies are almost irresistible, but they usually require lots of consistent training and exercise in order to become a well-behaved family member. In addition to making sure your pet is getting enough activity, it’s important not to reward the behavior by giving in to it with positive or negative responses.

Keep in mind that training and learning is something that takes time and patience, and continues throughout a dog’s lifetime.

November Is Pet Diabetes Awareness Month
Know the symptoms of diabetes in pets
Diabetes in pets is more common than you might think: it’s estimated that approximately 1 in 300 adult dogs and 1 in 230 cats in the U.S. will develop the disease. While diabetes can occur at any age, it’s of particular concern for senior pets—those over 7. Symptoms of diabetes can include:

Lethargy
Excessive thirst
Frequent urination
Increased hunger
Weight loss
Weakness
Cloudy eyes, especially in dogs
Poor skin condition
Females are twice as likely as males to become diabetic, and there are some dog breeds that are at higher risk as well—they include Samoyeds, miniature schnauzers, miniature poodles, and pugs.

While there’s no known cure for diabetes, your pet can lead a happy, healthy life with insulin injections, diet modification and careful blood monitoring. However, this disease remains a serious, life-threatening condition.
