IOP is a Veterinary Ophthalmology only practice, specializing in diagnosing and treating eye conditions in pets using both Eastern and Western therapies. Clinic locations and hours vary: Hancock Park Veterinary Clinic location on Tues and Wed and Beverly Hills Small Animal Hospital location on Thurs and Fri (and every 2nd and 4th Sat). Please call ahead to make an appointment as we are unable to a

About Integrative Ophthalmology for Pets and Dr. Nancy Park-Dorner

Raised in the suburbs of New York City and educated on the East Coast, Dr. Park-Dorner relocated to Southern California to enjoy the excellent quality of life, which is what she strives to provide for her clients and their pets. It is for this reason that she began studying complementary or ‘Eastern’ Veterinary medicine as well, to add more ‘tools’ to her tool belt, if you will.

The most influential individual in this decision was her Doberman, Red, whom she adopted when he was six years old. He was born blind and diagnosed with prostate cancer at eight years of age. Prostate cancer is a very malignant and difficult cancer to treat, and so Red was given a six- to 12-month prognosis.

In addition to accepted conventional or ‘Western’ treatments, Dr. Park-Dorner integrated food therapy, herbal medications, and acupuncture.

Although a firm believer and established practitioner of Western Veterinary medicine, she believes that the combination of conventional and complementary medications and treatments allowed Red to live comfortably for 2 additional years.

For Dr. Park-Dorner, Red’s life serves as a testament to the benefits of complementary Eastern medicine in conjunction with conventional Western medicine when it is indicated and appropriate.

The mission for Integrative Ophthalmology for Pets, founded in 2015, is to create a balanced and prevenative ocular health care plan based on a thororough ophthalmic examination and recognition of each patient as a whole and unique individual.

Each eye examination is performed using a slit lamp biomicroscope to view the front portion of the eye (to assess for any abrasion, scarring, or any other concerns) and indirect ophthalmoscopy to view the back portion of eye including the retina (to assess the level of vision, for cataracts or anything else that might be concerning). The following diagnostics will be performed at each consultation as necessary to obtain baseline values and assess response to therapy:

A Schirmer Tear Test (STT) is performed to assess tear quantity.

An intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement is taken to make sure pressures in the eyes are normal.

A fluorescein dye test is performed to reveal any scratches or abrasions on the corneal surface and to assess quality of tears.

Chromatic light testing is performed to assess the functionality of the pupils and other structures related to vision.

Treating your pet is a team effort so we also want you, the pet parent, to play an active role in formulating the treatment plan. We will discuss any systemic problems that may have contributed to your pet’s ocular condition(s) and make recommendations for dietary changes or oral supplements that we believe may help with your pet's eyes.

Our goal is to give you all the information we have and offer different options so that you can make the best decision for you and your pet based on your beliefs and lifestyle. After the exam you will receive a detailed explanation of your pet’s condition and options for treatment.
