Oh the life of a pig!
This is a great video of Waddles and Snowball just being silly boars!
On a very very serious note. Guinea pigs are typically bonded to another pig, sometimes a sibling sometimes just a friend. Boars usually are bonded as a pair, while sows can be bonded in herds more easily. Guinea pigs are herd animals. They rarely are okay being alone. That being said, there have been a lot of recent single pig adoptions going on in SoCal through the shelters as well as some rescues. When this happens, one pig is adopted and goes home while their best friend is left behind. This causes depression in both pigs. They should never be adopted separately! The only example that works in this case is if there is a group of sows and someone adopts part of that group. When one pig is adopted and the other left behind, they can both suffer from major depression, stop eating, become less active, and even cry. Adoption is a beautiful thing, but anytime someone wants to split a bonded pair of pigs I can’t go along with it and support it. Their bond is so strong and I wish more people understood this and kept them together.
Fostering animals is such a rewarding thing to do. Especially when you literally save an animal just hours from being euthanized. What I love about working with @socalguineapigrescue is that all the supplies and food is provided! They make it super easy! If you’re interesting in becoming a foster parent with us please message me and we can get you started!
