"Save the Leadwell Kitties"

"Save the Leadwell Kitties" This mission originally focused on rescuing 100-150 cats/kittens living on a hoarders' property. The name of the street is Leadwell. I can attest to this.

"And till my ghastly tale is told, this heart within me burns."
~ Samuel Taylor Coleridge

The "Save the Leadwell Kitties" mission began in late January of 2010 addressing the suffering and neglect of over 150 cats behind the gates of a private property in the San Fernando Valley (a suburb of LA). This place is a run down, dilapidated, and abandoned apartment complex in the heart of the Sa

n Fernando Valley. It's soul tenant is a violent and mentally ill woman in her late 50’s. Her elderly mother owns this property along with several other buildings in the County... all of which are in ill repair. Maria (the mother) lost the ability to insure the Leadwell property years ago - making it uninhabitable for tenants. For over three years there has been no running water or electricity at the 12-unit complex (something I thought was against the law). Maria, the mother, drives over each night with white buckets filled with water and exchanges the used ones. This is the time when she and her daughter, Julia, feed all of the cats. Like the Pied Piper they come out from every nook & cranny when the mother arrives. They crawl out from underneath the foundations of the two buildings and bolt out from the rotting garage stalls. From every direction they arrive at the center of the driveway... it's feeding time! This mother and daughter team have been hoarding cats here for over twenty years. Long time residents in the neighborhood will attest to this. Many of the surrounding neighbors have witnessed the suffering, neglect, and overpopulation and have contacted me. There are also a couple of women within the rescue community who have sided with Maria and Julia... misleading others to believe these are "community cats" and that their condition isn't as bad as my videos and documentation suggest. But to those of us who know the situation firsthand, we beg to differ. Both the mother and daughter are responsible for creating the situation... collecting cats from other locations and bringing them to Leadwell. They don't get them fixed nor vaccinated, allowing them to reproduce over and over again. For years many of these animals lived inside two of the units until a raid in 1999. During that raid approximately 30 cats were seized along with two aquariums filled with rodents... piled on top of each other. Detective Rudy Ramirez (formerly with the ACTF or Animal Cruelty Task Force) told me that Leadwell was the first raid he went on after joining the team. These animals receive no veterinary care unless it is done so by an outside party. The property is an eye sore and health hazard to the surrounding community. There is debris, overgrowth, f***s, and urine through out. Many neighbors have told me they can't walk on the sidewalk because the stench is sickening. The crawl spaces under buildings and surrounding lots are used as litter boxes. Children cannot play on the grass due to contamination and erratic behavior by the daughter and mother. Many of the neighbors have carried the burden of the overpopulation in to their own hands by trapping the ones that wander in to the vacant lot or on to their patios. They've taken cats and kittens to their own vet hospitals and given them homes (indoors). Those are the lucky ones! For years I drove by the Leadwell property... always wondering why such neglect was being allowed to take place. Anyone who knew about this place refers to it as, "the crazy cat lady's property". It wasn't until moving in to the neighborhood and living one street over that I could no longer turn a blind eye to the suffering. To date; I’ve rescued and/or removed 78 cats from behind the gates or along the perimeter. Most of the seventy seven were kittens and suffering from illness and disease: including URIs (Upper Respiratory Infections), eye ulcers, Conjunctivitis, extreme malnutrition, diarrhea, flea infestation and anemia, Pneumonia, Parasites (Coccidia, Giardia), worms, skin sores, untreated bites, abscessed wounds, and fever. At one point, during this rescue I had over 23 boarded at a Veterinary hospital on the West side of Los Angeles. At the same time my own bathroom served as a small triage center and nursery. The daughter, Julia, told me that she just picks up the bodies of the dead ones and places them in her blue trash bins. You may not see their numbers when you drive by. You may not be aware of extent of the problem but I can tell you this; it's a place of darkness and death. The horrors I've witnessed with my own eyes would shock and sicken most. Make no mistake, these innocent animals have suffered indescribably. It’s the kind of place nightmare are made of.

It's the most wonderful time of the year, for most. But for many, it's also the most painful and stressful! Countless friends and family are grieving the loss of loved ones, dealing with financial hardship, health struggles, food insecurity and homelessness.

Personally, I've been super slammed busy... mostly trying to run a rescue with limited funds and relying on volunteers and fosters... and neglecting my own health (specifically, dental) needs.

With people contacting me daily - begging for help, the cat/kitten overpopulation crisis and need for affordable/free SPAY-NEUTER options is more dire than ever. I, simply, cannot return all the voicemails, emails, and direct messages and am doing my best to prioritize.

But we all are doing the best we can and I beg forgiveness to anyone who's supported our rescue mission - that I may have neglected to acknowledge and THANK!

Recently, a new volunteer made contact and the timing couldn't have been better. She has really come through, repeatedly, in the last few weeks... most recently last Thursday evening.

Kat took time out of her busy schedule to help me micro-chip semi-ferals: Grace Kelly and Luna, drive them to Burbank, and set them up in their new, outdoor, heated enclosure.

Grace and Luna will be well-cared for by a cat-loving staff at a luxury recording studios - where they'll be helping keep the rodents away in the high-walled and vast courtyards.

Kat Kovacs, you ROCK!!! I'm so very grateful for you!! And feel indebted to all our wonderful volunteers, fosters, donors and supporters.

XOXOXO

Last night, new volunteer, Kat Kovacs, and I moved these two, lucky semi-ferals (Grace Kelly and Luna) to their new home - at a luxury recording studios property in Burbank, CA.

When Kat arrived, I had them already loaded into transfer cages before realizing I needed to insert their micro-chips. This is not something you want to "rush" - so Kat helped me to safely get them by the scruffs and the chips inserted.

Once we arrived at the location, we were warmly greeted - not only by the woman who runs the entire business, but by her cat-loving staff. We were given a full tour and discussed the acclimation process, in great detail, before it was time to open the cages and coax them into their new, temporary, heated enclosure.

Grace and Luna hit the jackpot as they will be pampered and well-cared for by a full-time staff who are all cat-lovers. This is one of the photos sent earlier - letting me know the girls have already explored their new digs and have already eaten.

THANK YOU, Kat, for being so incredibly helpful. I'm beyond grateful for your assistance!!

We're looking forward to more updates like this!!

I'm wondering if this may be what took the lives of 3 kittens - last kitten season. Whatever it was came on so quickly and we couldn't save them.

More cats have died with severe neurological disease due to highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza, and they don't all have connections to dairy farms, raw milk, or sick birds.

The national HPAI outbreak is spreading and cats are particularly susceptible. Could infected cats enter your shelter, TNR clinic, or other programs? Would you know what to look for? Or how to respond?

Join us tomorrow December 20, 2024 at 2:30-3:30pm CT, for a special session of National Shelter Medicine Rounds focusing on H5N1 and its implications for animal shelters and animal welfare professionals.

This informal but timely discussion will address the latest updates on the virus, its potential impact on shelter operations, and key considerations for safeguarding both animals and staff. A concise list of recommendations for shelters will be shared following the session to support your preparedness efforts. We hope to see you there for this critical conversation.

Well, as you can see, they're all doing really well... including Smokey, the adult, long-haired Tabby - who showed up at my neighbor's door, begging for food - wearing an impound collar from East Valley Shelter.

The kittens are helping socialize him on top of the trust exercises I'm doing with him daily... and Churu paste (treat) is also making this process easier.

This is the 4th day I've let Smokey out to play with them and he's no longer growling and swatting (except occasionally, if he gets spooked). But he's engaging in play with them and beginning to act like a kitten, himself.

12/18/2024

I'm on the verge of another, miraculous story of a former feral (or cat with behavioral issues) being socialized and rehabilitated successfully... and it brings much joy!!

Smokey, the long-haired, striped Tabby who showed up at my neighbor's patio, with an impound collar around his neck (from East Valley), allowed me to BRUSH him last night!! That's right... this is the boy I posted about needing an experienced groomer who could shave him down.

Today, he rested his head on my chest for a full five minutes and even began to purr!! He's taking corrections well and learning so fast - that there's no need to bite or lash out. Love and cuddles are MUCH better - but it takes trust.

Stay tuned...

Here's KIKI, the beautiful, sweet, Dilute Tortie-Tabby (Torbie?) from Garden Grove... that her finder's thought was pregnant.

Turns out she needs a home, afterall!!!

She's young... probably under a year, now fixed and fully vaccinated. If you're looking to FOSTER, she's in need... so we can get her closer to the SFV... PLUS, the couple can't hold onto her permanently. Right now, she's staying in their laundry room area.

Remember Kiki, the beautiful, young, presumed-pregnant-but-wasn't girl I helped get a last minute spay appointment, last week?

I held her for a couple days before the young couple drove from Garden Grove, CA, to pick her up. It was only THEN they communicated that they couldn't keep her... the wife is allergic and hubby's taking care of his ailing mother.

Had I known this ahead of time, I'd have gotten her combo-tested. I'm sure she's negative as she's a very healthy girl who's probably not even a year old, yet.

In other words: Kiki is looking for a good, loving home!!! I'll be posting a video of her, shortly...

Mildred is now listed on Adopt-a-Pet and Petfinder under 2TheResQ, in Sherman Oaks, CA.

Alice's listings should be up and running within the next hour.

It's getting harder to tell these four apart - at quick glance... although Edmund is the biggest (longest body) and I suspect he's from a different litter (four already adopted through CATS Inc).

Let me exercise my brain here... that would be Butch, Cassidy, Sundance and Agatha.

You'll find their full rescue journey chronicled in Photo Album #34.
