"Save the Leadwell Kitties"

"Save the Leadwell Kitties" This mission originally focused on rescuing 100-150 cats/kittens living on a hoarders' property. The name of the street is Leadwell. I can attest to this.

"And till my ghastly tale is told, this heart within me burns."

The "Save the Leadwell Kitties" mission began in late January of 2010 addressing the suffering and neglect of over 150 cats behind the gates of a private property in the San Fernando Valley (a suburb of LA). This place is a run down, dilapidated, and abandoned apartment complex in the heart of the Sa

n Fernando Valley. It's soul tenant is a violent and mentally ill woman in her late 50’s. Her elderly mother owns this property along with several other buildings in the County... all of which are in ill repair. Maria (the mother) lost the ability to insure the Leadwell property years ago - making it uninhabitable for tenants. For over three years there has been no running water or electricity at the 12-unit complex (something I thought was against the law). Maria, the mother, drives over each night with white buckets filled with water and exchanges the used ones. This is the time when she and her daughter, Julia, feed all of the cats. Like the Pied Piper they come out from every nook & cranny when the mother arrives. They crawl out from underneath the foundations of the two buildings and bolt out from the rotting garage stalls. From every direction they arrive at the center of the driveway... it's feeding time! This mother and daughter team have been hoarding cats here for over twenty years. Long time residents in the neighborhood will attest to this. Many of the surrounding neighbors have witnessed the suffering, neglect, and overpopulation and have contacted me. There are also a couple of women within the rescue community who have sided with Maria and Julia... misleading others to believe these are "community cats" and that their condition isn't as bad as my videos and documentation suggest. But to those of us who know the situation firsthand, we beg to differ. Both the mother and daughter are responsible for creating the situation... collecting cats from other locations and bringing them to Leadwell. They don't get them fixed nor vaccinated, allowing them to reproduce over and over again. For years many of these animals lived inside two of the units until a raid in 1999. During that raid approximately 30 cats were seized along with two aquariums filled with rodents... piled on top of each other. Detective Rudy Ramirez (formerly with the ACTF or Animal Cruelty Task Force) told me that Leadwell was the first raid he went on after joining the team. These animals receive no veterinary care unless it is done so by an outside party. The property is an eye sore and health hazard to the surrounding community. There is debris, overgrowth, f***s, and urine through out. Many neighbors have told me they can't walk on the sidewalk because the stench is sickening. The crawl spaces under buildings and surrounding lots are used as litter boxes. Children cannot play on the grass due to contamination and erratic behavior by the daughter and mother. Many of the neighbors have carried the burden of the overpopulation in to their own hands by trapping the ones that wander in to the vacant lot or on to their patios. They've taken cats and kittens to their own vet hospitals and given them homes (indoors). Those are the lucky ones! For years I drove by the Leadwell property... always wondering why such neglect was being allowed to take place. Anyone who knew about this place refers to it as, "the crazy cat lady's property". It wasn't until moving in to the neighborhood and living one street over that I could no longer turn a blind eye to the suffering. To date; I’ve rescued and/or removed 78 cats from behind the gates or along the perimeter. Most of the seventy seven were kittens and suffering from illness and disease: including URIs (Upper Respiratory Infections), eye ulcers, Conjunctivitis, extreme malnutrition, diarrhea, flea infestation and anemia, Pneumonia, Parasites (Coccidia, Giardia), worms, skin sores, untreated bites, abscessed wounds, and fever. At one point, during this rescue I had over 23 boarded at a Veterinary hospital on the West side of Los Angeles. At the same time my own bathroom served as a small triage center and nursery. The daughter, Julia, told me that she just picks up the bodies of the dead ones and places them in her blue trash bins. You may not see their numbers when you drive by. You may not be aware of extent of the problem but I can tell you this; it's a place of darkness and death. The horrors I've witnessed with my own eyes would shock and sicken most. Make no mistake, these innocent animals have suffered indescribably. It’s the kind of place nightmare are made of.

Many people are decorating their homes for the holidays, but pet owners should be aware that some plants used for holiday decorating can be dangerous to cats and dogs. Understanding which plants are toxic, and which are not, can help bring home the festive spirit and avoid danger for pets!

Read more here: https://moderncat.com/.../which-holiday-plants-are-toxic.../

Poinsettia → vomiting, diarrhea

Holly → berries can be deadly

Mistletoe → heart & breathing problems

Amaryllis → tremors, severe vomiting

Cyclamen → can be fatal

Christmas cactus (safe if true Schlumbergera)

Pet-safe alternatives: orchids, African violets, spider plants, real Christmas cactus, ferns.

A $25 plant can turn into an $800 vet bill.
Move toxic plants out of reach.

This is our newest rescue and I'm calling him, Hudson! I'm pretty sure this is a male but would you all mind taking a look at the clip - at the end, where I get some close up footage? He's either neutered - and they removed ALL of the testicles, completely (I feel no sacks) or he's cryptorchid(???).

At the other end of the friendly spectrum, the boy closest to the lens is the most fearful. He'll purr when you start scratching his back, however... just a little skittish upon approach.

Just received this beautiful shot of Luna who was a pregnant stray when we rescued her from the mean streets. Her adopter took this shot earlier while she was in the courtyard, eating lunch. Luna now hangs out closely, even rubbing her body against the woman's legs.

As soon as Luna arrived, back in late March of 2024, I booked her for a spay-termination immediately. But while my friend and fellow trapper, Bianca Priddy, was standing in line at the Simi Valley Clinic, Luna went into labor right then and there.

So, back home she came with 5 newborns. They went to a foster home right away and once all her kittens were fixed and vetted, they were quickly adopted.

But Luna hid most of the time and was never really adoptable herself. Well, that was until a wonderful woman, who manages a boutique recording studio (in Glendale) contacted me, wanting a couple of ferals to live within the high walls of the lovely studio grounds.

After Luna's kittens were placed, she came back home here, with me, and I introduced her to another semi-feral, Grace Kelly.

The two of them become best buds and were adopted together. I get more happy updates on these two than I do on any tame adoptions.

These girls are spoiled rotten... and are loved by all of the staff.

Luna's rescue journey is chronicled in Photo Album #32.

Pinky chillaxin on a rainy afternoon!

This girl was part of a litter of four female kittens, all around only 12 days old when rescued from an apartment building in Van Nuys. Their Mama stashed two of them under the hood of one vehicle, two under another. Fortunately, they were parked in the same stall and when the family began driving, and heard kittens crying, they went back home and safely removed them from both cars.

The location was where we ended up doing a huge TNR project and rescued multiple litters, all within less than a month.

Pinky's rescue journey is chronicled in Photo Album #24.

Trap/Neuter/Return is currently the most humane option for the current cat overpopulation! It would be great if the friendly cats could be off the streets, but until fosters step up, rescue/shelter numbers needing help are down, is the most humane alternative .
