Consider a time 150 years ago when horse ownership was commonplace. Every town and community featured livery stables, while skilled trades such as wheelwrights, wagon and buggy manufacturers, tanneries for leather goods, and blacksmith shops thrived. Fields were harvested, and barns were stocked with hay to sustain horses through the winter months. During the Civil War, horses played a crucial role, pulling supply wagons, ambulance carts, cannons, and serving cavalrymen. Prior to the Battle of Carnifex Ferry,

Union General Rosecrans led his 5,000 Ohioan troops from Clarksburg toward the battle in 1861, accompanied by a caravan of hundreds of wagons and horses that extended for miles. (What a remarkable sight that must have been!) In contrast, today we rely on automobiles, a transformation made possible by Henry Ford's invention of the horseless carriage. Yet, I often reflect on what life must have been like in an era that relied heavily on horses for plowing fields, transporting goods in buggies and wagons, and fulfilling our fundamental transportation needs.

Did you know Spirit recently turned 29?
The horse that inspired the character Spirit in the film is a living horse who is currently 29 years old. DreamWorks selected Spirit as a young c**t when he was merely a foal. He was born to a stallion and mare that were captured by the Bureau of Land Management in Oregon. Spirit exemplifies the Kiger mustang breed, characterized by his striking features, including wide-set eyes and a thick, wavy mane and tail of multiple colors, which influenced the animated portrayal that continues to enchant audiences today.

In reality, Spirit embodies the mission of his animated counterpart by advocating for the conservation of wild horses and their natural environments. He resides at a sanctuary where he not only enjoys interactions with humans but also acts as a prominent ambassador for wild horses, motivating young individuals globally to understand the significance of America's mustangs and the necessity of freedom and protection for all equines. Spirit lives at the Return to Freedom sanctuary in Santa Barbara County, where he roams across 300 acres of unspoiled California pasture. Although he was raised among humans from an early age, those who know him well remark on his spirited nature, which is reminiscent of his animated persona.

He plays an essential role in the sanctuary by educating the public about his breed and advocating for the safeguarding of America’s wild horses. The Spanish Riding School in Vienna, Austria
The riding school was first named during the Habsburg Monarchy in 1572, long before the French manege of Antoine de Pluvinel, and is the oldest of its kind in the world.[2] Records show that a wooden riding arena was first commissioned in 1565, but it wasn't until 1729 that Emperor Charles VI commissioned the architect Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach to build the white riding hall used today. Prior to that time, the school operated from a wooden arena at the Josefsplatz. For a time, the riding hall was used for various ceremonies, but it is now open to the public, who may witness the training and performances by the stallions.

The Spanish Riding School was named for the Spanish horses that formed one of the bases of the Lipizzan breed, which is used exclusively at the school. Today the horses delivered to the Spanish Riding School are bred at the Piber Federal Stud located near the village of Piber in western Styria, Austria. One of the original studs used to develop the breed was Lipizza, now called Lipica, near Trieste in modern Slovenia, which gave its name to the breed.

The Spanish Riding School has antecedents in military traditions dating as far back as Xenophon in Ancient Greece, and particularly from the military horsemanship of the post-medieval ages when knights attempted to retain their battlefield preeminence by shedding heavy armor and learning to maneuver quickly and with great complexity on a firearms-dominated battlefield.

Traditionally, Lipizzaners at the school have been trained and ridden wholly by men, although the Spanish Riding School states that there has never been an official ban on women. In October 2008, two women, Sojourner Morrell, 18-year-old from the United Kingdom and Hannah Zeitlhofer, 21-year-old from Austria, passed the entrance exam and were accepted to train as riders at the school – the first women to do so in 436 years.

Rare Blue Roan Horse 🐎
Roan is a horse coat color pattern characterized by an even mixture of colored and white hairs on the body, while the head and "points"—lower legs, mane and tail—are mostly solid-colored. Horses with roan coats have white hairs evenly intermingled throughout any other color. The head, legs, mane and tail have fewer scattered white hairs or none at all...
The roan pattern is dominantly-inherited, and is found in many horse breeds. While the specific mutation responsible for roan has not been exactly identified, a DNA test can determine zygosity for roan in several breeds. True roan is always present at birth, though it may be hard to see until after the foal coat sheds out. The coat may lighten or darken from winter to summer, but unlike the gray coat color, which also begins with intermixed white and colored hairs, roans do not become progressively lighter in color as they age. The silvering effect of mixed white and colored hairs can create coats that look bluish or pinkish...🩶
