Leptospirosis is a dangerous, and potentially deadly, bacterial disease that can be harmful to both humans and animals.

Leptospirosis damages the kidneys and liver of dogs, humans and other animals, but is only rarely seen in cats. It is spread through the urine of infected dogs, squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, opossums, rodents and other common wildlife.

Vaccination is the best way to prevent leptospirosis. Your dog can become infected by drinking, swimming in or walking through contaminated water or soil, or by consuming wildlife such as chipmunks, rats and mice.

To avoid GI blockages, cut the melon from the rind and remove the seeds before sharing this classic summer treat.

🌾Inspect Thoroughly: After walks or outdoor activities, check your dog from head to tail, paying close attention to areas where foxtails commonly attach, such as ears, paws, and armpits.

🌾Recognize Symptoms: Be aware of signs that may indicate a foxtail has penetrated your dog's skin or entered their body. Symptoms can include sudden sneezing or coughing, excessive licking or scratching at a particular area, swelling, discharge, or persistent shaking of the head.

🌾Immediate Action: If you suspect a foxtail is embedded in your dog's skin, try to remove it carefully using tweezers, but if it's deep or if you're unsure, seek veterinary assistance promptly.

🌾Monitor Behavior: If your dog displays unusual behavior such as lethargy, loss of appetite, or any signs of discomfort that persist, consult your veterinarian. Foxtails can migrate internally and cause serious infections if not addressed.

🌾Vet Visit: It's always better to err on the side of caution. If you notice anything concerning, don't delay in contacting your vet. They can perform a thorough examination to locate and safely remove any foxtails and provide appropriate treatment if necessary.

With heat waves sweeping across the country, blue-green algae is appearing in new areas and posing an increased risk to pets.

Found in lakes, ponds or any source of standing water, it’s extremely toxic and consuming it can be fatal. The best way to prevent accidental poisoning is to keep a close eye on pets when they’re around water.

If you think your pet has been exposed, take them to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital and contact the ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435.
