-- Adopting a friend --

Please call the shelter if you are interested in adopting any of the pets. Although we try our best to update this page, we cannot guarantee that the information here is up-to-date. Please note that the shelter is unable to 'hold' animals. Stray animals taken to the shelter are held for three business days to allow the owner to reclaim the pet. If they are not reclaimed they are available for adoption. Owner surrendered pets typically are available for adoption or rescue immediately. The temporary adoption fee per the Director is a non refundable $65.00 for dogs, puppies, cats and kittens. The adoption fee covers the surgical sterilization, a one year rabies vaccination and a booster vaccination. If the pet is already spayed/neutered, the adoption fee is only $15

Wondering what happened to our shelter systems and why so many are at capacity right now?

1. During the pandemic there was a shortage of anesthesia drugs and very few spay/neuter procedures were performed, resulting in a huge population explosion far exceeding the number of people looking to adopt.

2. Consolidation and takeover of the veterinary business by private-equity firms and a few monopolistic companies has resulted in higher prices and fewer choices, leaving many pet owners without sufficient resources to care for their pets. For example, a simple spay or neuter procedure, which cost under $200 just a few years ago, is now averaging over $700. These corporate veterinarians are under increasing pressure to generate revenue and are often required to push unnecessary tests and procedures to increase profits. This unconscionable price gouging has forced many families to surrender their pets when they get sick or are injured.

3. Big corporations have also consolidated ownership of apartment buildings in the U.S. and imposed stricter restrictions on pet owners. Many apartments now do not permit pet ownership at all, and quite a few others limit pets to 25 pounds. Consequently, many existing pet owners and people who would like to own a pet, are finding it difficult to secure places to live, which has also contributed to a higher-than-usual number of pet surrenders.

How do we solve this problem?

In addition to supporting groups like ours and your local shelters, write your elected officials and pressure them to examine the veterinary industry and prevent pet ownership from becoming completely unaffordable. Meanwhile, we are committed to Operation Pit Stop, which provides free spay/neuters to low-income families. In the past year we have altered over 7,000 pets, and we are pleased to announce that this month we are conducting an Operation Pit Stop in Tulsa, Oklahoma with the goal of altering over 500 pets. This will be followed by ones in Fort Worth, Dallas, Indianapolis, Miami, Tampa and Spokane. Together we can reverse the tide and save lives!

YES!!

Every time rescue is asked to take an owner surrender- we have to somehow make room on our little raft for that dog. When an owner says stuff like “I don’t have time to give them the best life” or “I have to move” or “they have too much anxiety” it really falls flat because that means if we bring them on the raft, another dog out there in the freezing water gets to die.
Every day in rescue we adjudicate life and death by gate keeping who can get on the boat.
Rescues and shelters are the tiny rescue boats.
The ship is our community at large.
The iceberg is comprised of puppy mills, careless owners, backyard breeders, and a$$hats who won’t spay/neuter.

Let us not forget all the homeless animals on the streets trying to survive until they either die or rescued.
