There is no finish line in horses.

There are lots of things that work, and lots of things that don’t. There are things that work wonders with some horses, and are ineffective, at best, with others. Things that have stood the test of time and remain true. Others change as we learn more about the science behind how horses think and learn.

There are multiple schools of thought, processes, and training methods. While each road looks a bit different some merge on the same result-a soft, willing, confident partner.

Was one way wrong and one way right?

As riders I think the best thing we can do is fill our toolbox with lots of different kinds of tools. Ask questions, learn, change your mind about things when you have more information, and hold firm to your methods when it’s right to do so. Most importantly eat a lot of humble pie and enjoy the horse.

You go with you.

High caliber horses with top end tack, a new truck and fancy trailer, a move to your dream property with beautiful green pastures, a new job- that pays more then you ever dreamed….and still you’re not happy.

You’re stuck on the wheel of searching, searching, searching, and still not finding that feeling you thought you’d have. You live in a constent state of looking outwardly for things that will make you feel content and look succesful. Seeking social media fame, approval, and envy from others….and still you’re not happy.

The common factor is you. You go with you- everyday and in every situation

You dont need more things, more “likes,” a new house, or a different job-you have tried that. You cannot outsource your happiness to things, or the opinions of strangers.

Big dreams are good- goals are great! But the ability to find joy, acceptance, and contentment with where you are today- while looking towards tomorrow is key.

How do you find deep contentment, while still pursuing big dreams?

The time is going to pass anyway.

An obvious fact, of course, but hearing that was a lightbulb moment for me.

We get so caught up in just getting by day to day, thinking “I’ll pursue that dream/goal/lifestyle once I….make x amount of money, once I move to y, after I finish z, after I have kids- or after my kids are grown.”

Time passes and we haven’t yet made x amount, or moved, or crossed the imaginary finish line we set, our ultimate goal/dream/lifestyle is pushed down the road- not enough time, not enough money, not enough confidence.

If your life isn’t quite what you want it to be start taking steps in the direction of what you do want. Take baby steps, crawl if you have to. A mountain isn’t climbed in a single step, even if you never make it to the peak the view is better from the middle then is was at the base.

Your not too old, not too broke, not too late to the game

Your not too busy

It might not be fast, it definitely won’t be perfect or always easy, and you might not ever “arrive.” The joy lies in the journey.

The time is going to pass anyway so you might as well start.

Though the deep snow is still making trails tricky in some places they are passable. Horses were happy to be out.

I enjoy watching them have to think of how best to place their feet and use their bodies.

This is a great lesson for riders to be mindful of how best to help their horse-staying balanced in the saddle, and quiet following hands.

Horses number one priority is keeping themselves safe, so I like letting them choose their path through tricky spots within reason.

Riding through tough terrain can help build trust between horse and rider when both are properly prepared to be good trustworthy partners.

We can tell a lot about where the horses brain and emotions are by looking at a their ears.

Horses hearing is similar to our own but they can swivel their ears 180 degrees, allowing them to focus intently on sounds in all directions around them.

Where their ears are point tell a story of what their brain is focused on- sometimes it has nothing to do with hearing and everything to do with emotion and communication.

What do you think is being communicated in each of these pictures?

Resolutions.

Do you set resolutions each New Year? Do you see those resolutions through?

I gave up setting resolutions awhile ago but I do set intention for the year by picking a word that I can circle back to when I start feeling a little lost. Something to help me refocus and redirect. It’s a bit more open ended than a specific goal.

It’s more difficult than you’d think to choose a focus word, and the process of choosing a meaningful word can be pretty eye opening if you allow it to be.

That being said I do still also tend to set some goals for myself and my horses around this time of year but I hold them loosely. If life with horses certainly teaches us anything, it’s flexibility, and that nothing is ever guaranteed- no matter how much you want it or how hard you work for it.

Rambo, enjoying his breakfast.

Rambo is an off the track Standardbred, after his racing career he went on to work for Amish and then ended up at a low end auction headed to an unfortunate end. Lucky for him he was snagged by a rescue instead and he found a wonderful home with one of our long time boarders. He is the sweetest, softest, most trusting guy, and always tries to do the right thing. He has been so fun to watch bloom here at the farm.
