Weโ€™re thankful for the wagging tails, purring patients, and the joy of helping pets live their best lives.

From our family to yours, we wish you a day filled with family, laughter, and maybe a little pie (for the humans, of course ๐Ÿ˜‰).

Weโ€™re so grateful for the opportunity to serve you!

๐ŸŒŸ Exciting News! ๐ŸŒŸ

We did a thing!! KVS has hired TWO new assistants! We have thrown them in the deep in over the past two weeks and they are doing GREAT!

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Weโ€™re thrilled to introduce our new team member, Riley! ๐ŸŽ‰ She will be joining us as a vet assistant and brings 5 years in the vet med field. Riley is a graduate of WKU and hopes to attend veterinary school in the future.

Riley is passionate about learning new surgery skills, and we canโ€™t wait for her to share her expertise with our team.

Join us in giving Riley a warm welcome! ๐Ÿ’ผโœจ

๐Ÿพ ๐Ÿพ

Weโ€™re also excited to welcome Kelsey to our team as a Veterinary Assistant! ๐ŸŽ‰ With a passion for animal care and 3 years in the veterinary field, she is ready to provide the best support for our furry friends. She is excited to see the higher end procedures KVS sees and to have Dr. Bruce mentor her and work with Riley. She also wants to pursue veterinary school in the future. And she's a twin!

Kelsey loves walking her dog and going to the gym, and we canโ€™t wait for her to get to know all of you and your pets!

Join us in giving Kelsey a warm welcome to the family! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ

Our friends at Animal hospital of Nicholasville are going through some big changes, and they are KNOCKING IT OUTTA THE PARK! We have been going there for over 2 years and have always loved working with the amazing team of staff and doctors. But Wednesday we walked into a brand new OR and surgery prep area. And let me tell you, every detail is perfect! We bring a lot of specialized equipment with us to do these advanced procedures, and sometimes space gets tight (see the last picture for where surgery used to be). But this new space is wide open! I can't believe the transformation. We can't wait to be using this space for years to come!

Do you have a Frenchie or other bulldog? Then I can bet they snore! Also applies to pugs, Boston terriers, maltese, etc. Why is that??

Dogs with a "smush face" are called brachycephalic. This literally means short head. And while they look cute, they have some structural issues. As you can see in Royalty here, her nasal openings (called "nares") are almost non-existent. This means she has to breathe very hard to get air in through her nose. So we can do some surgery to open up the nasal openings. The second picture shows the difference between the two when the first side has been completed.

Another structural issue with our brachycephalic breeds is that they have an elongated soft palate. This means the soft tissues in the back of the throat occlude the airway when they try to breathe. The third picture shows the breathing tube surrounded by all this extra tissue. So a surgeon can shorten the soft palate to increase the space around the airway opening, making it less likely that it becomes obstructed (see the fourth picture).

There are other structural issues that we cannot surgically address, so we can never make these pups symptom-free, but early surgical intervention can definitely improve their quality of life!

Been a busy month for us! Super honored to be trusted to work on a K9 officer. This local hero had a couple different things going on in his knee.

In the second photo, the blue arrow shows some mineralization in his quadriceps muscle. This indicates that the officer likely injured this muscle years ago and the body responded by placing mineral within the muscle.

The red outline in the second picture shows that there is extra fluid within the knee joint. Compare that to the third picture (of his good leg) where the joint is a normal black color.

The yellow arrow in the second picture shows that the tibia (or shin bone) is shifted forward. The only way to get this shift is if the ACL isn't doing it's job.

The last two pictures are after the TPLO procedure that we performed to stabilize the knee. Once that bone heals and after some rehab with , this K9 Officer will be back patrolling Lexington's streets!

SOOO excited for my friends! Stopped by (Veterinary Specialist Partners- VSP ) today on opening day to welcome them "back" to town. Not only are they offering Internal Medicine and Oncology, but a new Urgent Care to Louisville. And we will be happy to help break in the new OR with surgical cases when needed! ๐Ÿ˜‚

On Thursday we finished up our week at two fun clinics. The first was a TPLO at in Georgetown. They are fairly new friends to KVS but we always enjoy our time there with Dr. Bridge and Dr. Biddle. And Sydney rocks the anesthesia!

Then we followed up with another TPLO on a big sweet boxer at Green Tree Animal Hospital. We have been going there since last summer. Dr. Yocum has a super friendly practice and Maija is always on her A game and helps us immensely.

It was a perfect day with the perfect mix of old and new friends. And with that, KVS puts a wrap on 2023 as we are taking a much needed break for the rest of the year to spend some quality time with family. We will be back in 2024 well rested!
