Our friends at Animal hospital of Nicholasville are going through some big changes, and they are KNOCKING IT OUTTA THE PARK! We have been going there for over 2 years and have always loved working with the amazing team of staff and doctors. But Wednesday we walked into a brand new OR and surgery prep area. And let me tell you, every detail is perfect! We bring a lot of specialized equipment with us to do these advanced procedures, and sometimes space gets tight (see the last picture for where surgery used to be). But this new space is wide open! I can't believe the transformation. We can't wait to be using this space for years to come!

Do you have a Frenchie or other bulldog? Then I can bet they snore! Also applies to pugs, Boston terriers, maltese, etc. Why is that??

Dogs with a "smush face" are called brachycephalic. This literally means short head. And while they look cute, they have some structural issues. As you can see in Royalty here, her nasal openings (called "nares") are almost non-existent. This means she has to breathe very hard to get air in through her nose. So we can do some surgery to open up the nasal openings. The second picture shows the difference between the two when the first side has been completed.

Another structural issue with our brachycephalic breeds is that they have an elongated soft palate. This means the soft tissues in the back of the throat occlude the airway when they try to breathe. The third picture shows the breathing tube surrounded by all this extra tissue. So a surgeon can shorten the soft palate to increase the space around the airway opening, making it less likely that it becomes obstructed (see the fourth picture).

There are other structural issues that we cannot surgically address, so we can never make these pups symptom-free, but early surgical intervention can definitely improve their quality of life!

Been a busy month for us! Super honored to be trusted to work on a K9 officer. This local hero had a couple different things going on in his knee.

In the second photo, the blue arrow shows some mineralization in his quadriceps muscle. This indicates that the officer likely injured this muscle years ago and the body responded by placing mineral within the muscle.

The red outline in the second picture shows that there is extra fluid within the knee joint. Compare that to the third picture (of his good leg) where the joint is a normal black color.

The yellow arrow in the second picture shows that the tibia (or shin bone) is shifted forward. The only way to get this shift is if the ACL isn't doing it's job.

The last two pictures are after the TPLO procedure that we performed to stabilize the knee. Once that bone heals and after some rehab with , this K9 Officer will be back patrolling Lexington's streets!

What happens when four Veterinary Specialists in Louisville get together for a little fun?? What an end to the Derby festivities! Had an absolute blast hanging with friends at the front of the track for the 150th - complete with a photo finish! Not sure if we can ever top this one!

SOOO excited for my friends! Stopped by (Veterinary Specialist Partners- VSP ) today on opening day to welcome them "back" to town. Not only are they offering Internal Medicine and Oncology, but a new Urgent Care to Louisville. And we will be happy to help break in the new OR with surgical cases when needed! 😂

On Thursday we finished up our week at two fun clinics. The first was a TPLO at in Georgetown. They are fairly new friends to KVS but we always enjoy our time there with Dr. Bridge and Dr. Biddle. And Sydney rocks the anesthesia!

Then we followed up with another TPLO on a big sweet boxer at Green Tree Animal Hospital. We have been going there since last summer. Dr. Yocum has a super friendly practice and Maija is always on her A game and helps us immensely.

It was a perfect day with the perfect mix of old and new friends. And with that, KVS puts a wrap on 2023 as we are taking a much needed break for the rest of the year to spend some quality time with family. We will be back in 2024 well rested!

Kentucky Veterinary Surgery had an amazing week with multiple clinics going the extra mile! It's that collaboration that makes this service work.

On Thursday, Dr. Brown opened Hopewell Animal Hospital early so we could squeeze in a puppy forelimb fracture near the growth plate. And her rockstar technician Andrea came in early to run anesthesia.

Then today, with limited Sunday hours at Central Kentucky Veterinary Center, Dr. Mobley did the same on this cute puppy with another fracture close to the growth plate, but in the back leg. They even had a technician volunteer on their day off to run anesthesia (Shout out to EJ!).

Puppy fractures really can't wait too long for surgical correction. If it weren't for the gracious flexibility of these clinics and their staff, there is no way we could have gotten these two puppies with a fracture in this week as we were booked solid. Now both pets are home and on the mend with their families. Collaborative medicine is why we moved to this model!

Seriously can't believe it's been 2 full years of Kentucky Veterinary Surgery. In the past two years, we have helped 531 pets at 52 different clinics! We have also logged 33,664 miles on the road between the Louisville, Lexington, Southern Indiana, and occasionally, the Bowling Green markets! We are so humbled by the trust that both veterinary staff and pet owners place in us. And we promise to always treat the pets like the family members that they are. Here's to year three and beyond!!

From giant masses to mini patients. Our good friend, Dr. Brown at Hopewell Animal Hospital () called us to help when this 12 week old little puppy broke its femur (or thigh bone). I had to order special little plates and screws given that the puppy was under 5 pounds! That bright white ball in the radiographs is a calibration marker and only 1 inch wide. Now 4 weeks later it's healed! Video of how the puppy is doing now to follow. .

Got to cross the bridge into southern Indiana to go to Care-Pets Animal Hospital and Wellness Center for today's interesting case. Maggie is a super sweet big dog with a rapidly growing mass in the inguinal area. Luckily the mass appears to be a benign fatty mass that was able to be completely excised. We were able to place a suction drain to remove excess fluid from the area and Maggie went home the same day. Great news for her, there's a good chance surgery was curative! Who has a guess how much this mass weighed??

Shout-out to Salem Veterinary Service for calling us to help out with Goofy. This poor 12 year old dog got in a fight with a car, and had a comminuted, long oblique, femoral fracture which means there were multiple pieces to the fracture and the main orientation of the fracture was at a steep angle. But now he is put back together, and I'm hearing that he has bounced back quickly!! Old age is not a disease and we need to stop treating it like one. Hoping for a continued speedy recovery for this sweet guy!

This is the hospital I worked at in Indy for a few years. Love seeing such a quick resolution! Sharing as a reminder to always be honest with your vets so they can help. And with so much craziness in the profession today, a reminder that the staff is truly in it for the joy in saving animals.

Always a good day off when you get to help out a friend and colleague and try to show your squeamish daughter how your days go!

Sometimes you have to call in a friend to help with complicated cases! came to our rescue today and helped with removing a mammary tumor and on a poor puppy with an auto immune disease that has left her with a nonhealing wound. I am confident with our two minds together, the help of her family vet and the love and care of her parents, we will have Miss Raava in tip-top shape soon!!

Kentucky Veterinary Surgery would like to share some BIG news! We have hired our first employee. Everyone meet Hannah. We worked together a few years ago and she is the perfect compliment to our team. She will scrub into surgeries and help me be much more efficient, and she will be a huge asset to our clinics as she has years of experience prepping surgical procedures. Hannah always has a smile and gets along with everyone. So feel free to come meet her when we come to your clinic!

KVS wants to take the time to thank everyone for a successful 2022. We are a small, family run business, and we have worked hard to provide the highest quality surgeries throughout Kentucky and Southern Indiana. We are thankful for the wonderful practices that have opened the door and allowed us to work alongside of them to be part of the health of so many furry family members. We are truly blessed and can't wait to see what will happen in 2023. Wishing all our clinics, clients, and patients, the best in the upcoming year.

One year in the books!! Overwhelmed by everything that has happened over the past year. We have helped 211 animals and have been invited into 36 different clinics. We have been able to rekindle old relationships as well as get to know some new amazing Veterinarians and Technicians, not to mention their clients along with their furry family members. Feeling very grateful - and no better way to celebrate than trick or treating with my family and then enjoying a great glass of bourbon. Here's to the next year (and 25+ more after that!!)

Happy Vet Tech week to the real heroes behind our industry. Without you, none of my surgeries would have good outcomes. Thanks to all the techs I've worked with in the past, and all the techs who help me as I invade your clinics now!

Throwback to when I *almost* had enough tech help in a case 😂. -section

We were at Lexington Animal Clinic this week and Dr. Sheets asked us to check out some x-rays. This sweet pup has a mass filling nearly the entire pelvic canal - making it almost impossible to urinate or defecate. Her family has taken her to multiple doctors and performed all kinds of tests, CT scans, and biopsies. At the end of all of this, they were told that nothing could be done.

Luckily, Dr. Bruce has experienced a couple of these cases before, and had a cancellation that allowed surgery to be performed the next day. We are so happy to announce that the mass WAS able to be removed. And now this family gets to enjoy their girl for much longer.

Thank you so much for entrusting us with your precious pets. We strive to treat all of our patients as if they belonged to our close family members. And it's so invigorating when we see such dramatic results!

And here are Zelda's before and after x-rays. With a TPLO we change the mechanics in the knee to compensate for a torn ACL because in dogs repairing the ligament itself doesn't work.
