July is National Pet Hydration Awareness Month. While it’s extremely important to keep your pet hydrated, it’s also important to understand the dangers of water intoxication, which occurs from drinking too much water. Watch for overexposure to bodies of water such as pools, lakes, or even garden hoses. Excessive salivation, seizures, vomiting, and bloating are some of the early signs of water intoxication.

Help keep your pets safe this summer by knowing the symptoms of heat stroke and heat exhaustion. BOTH ARE MEDICAL EMERGENCIES.

Heat stroke is very serious, and is marked by excessive panting, drooling, rapid heartbeat, vomiting, seizures, and collapse—signs of a medical emergency requiring immediate veterinary care. Heat exhaustion could be a precursor to heat stroke and should be paid attention to! Symptoms include heavy panting, weakness, elevated heart rate, and dehydration.

Call our Urgent Care at 502-901-7990 or your primary care veterinarian’s clinic for treatment guidance right away if you see your pet suffering from heat-related issues.

Most commonly found in middle-aged female dogs - and rarely in cats - immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP) refers to a blood disease where the immune system targets and destroys the body's platelets. ITP can present with a variety of clinical signs. Your primary care veterinarian may refer your pet to an internist (an internal medicine specialist) to complete a comprehensive work-up and design a specific treatment plan.
