This patient was brought in by her owner because she kept hearing a popping noise when her baby would walk. After a full orthopedic exam, Dr. Wells found the source of the clicking to be her patella (knee cap) popping in and out of the groove on her femur. The technical diagnosis for this is called medial patellar luxation which means that her knee cap pops in and out towards her body. Some dogs have this and it doesn’t seem to bother them. But any dog that has knees like this is prone to developing arthritis due to chronic grinding associated with the back and forth motion. The only way to correct this is with orthopedic surgery.

WELLNESS WEDNESDAY WITH DR WELLS:
Is your pet scratching their ears? Sometimes it can be more than an ear infection! This patient presented with ear mites. You usually cannot see ear mites as they are about the size of a pinhead. If you notice itchy ears with a brownish/black discharge, it is best to have your pet checked out by your veterinarian so they can examine it under a microscope. We have included a video so you can see just how irritating and itchy these little pests can be! Treatment consists of specially medicated ear drops. It is also important to keep your pet isolated from other animals as ear mites are contagious! Be well 🐾
