As we gear up for the Fourth of July celebrations, it's important to remember our furry family members! Fireworks can be frightening for pets, so here are some detailed tips to keep them safe:

1. Indoor Haven: Keep your pets indoors during fireworks displays. Create a safe space in a quiet, secure room where they feel comfortable.

2. Cozy Retreat: Set up their favorite bedding, toys, and familiar items in their safe space. This helps provide a sense of security amidst the loud noises.

3. Noise Reduction: Close windows and draw curtains to minimize sound and flashing lights. Playing soothing music or white noise can also help mask outside sounds.

4. Identification: Ensure your pets are wearing collars with up-to-date ID tags. In case they get scared and escape, this will help in their safe return.

5. Stay Calm: Pets can pick up on our anxiety. Stay calm and reassuring around them to help them feel more secure.

We are back again today for another Fun Fact Friday!

Meet Stooie, a 12-week-old Mastiff puppy who already weighs over 25 lbs! Adult male Mastiffs can weigh over 200 lbs when fully grown. You may be asking yourself, 'How much does he eat?!' or 'What do you feed him?!'

Of all the pet food claims, 'Large Breed Puppy' food is actually based on very good science. Puppies whose adult weight is estimated to be over 60 lbs should be fed a puppy food noted as 'Large Breed'. These foods have subtle variations in analysis, balance of proteins and carbs, and minerals. This prolongs the growth phase, allowing bones and joints to keep up with the muscle mass and weight. This puts less stress on the skeletal system and results in better long-term joint health. Now you know!

FUN FACT FRIDAY: TORTOISE EDITION! 🐢

Pictured here is Dr. Tom with Sheldon, the leopard tortoise! Did you know that leopard tortoises can live much longer than humans? Yep, these slow-moving creatures can stick around for over 100 years! Imagine having a pet that could outlive you and possibly even your grandkids. They truly take the slow and steady approach to life. Sheldon’s owner, our awesome receptionist Cassie, has already prepared her son to take over his care once she’s gone. While we don’t treat tortoises in our clinic, Sheldon loves greeting doggy friends!

Meet Dawn, an invaluable member of our team at LFAH since February 2024. Dawn's journey in animal care stems from her deep-rooted love for animals, particularly dogs.

When not tending to her four-legged family, Dawn indulges in her passions for Trail Running, crafting, and sports. But what sets Dawn apart are her remarkable life experiences. Did you know she was part of the '84 Olympic Volleyball Team? Not only that, but Dawn is a proud mother of four and grandmother of two, with a heart dedicated to rescuing Pitbulls.

We understand that your schedules can be busy during the weekdays, making it challenging to find time for your furry friends' appointments and supplies. With our new Saturday hours, we aim to provide you with more flexibility and convenience in caring for your beloved pets.

Dr. Ann Brown, formerly Ann Nelson, studied animal science and veterinary medicine at Michigan State University. She graduated with high honors from veterinary medical school in 1995. She spent two years at Colorado State University studying anatomic pathology and molecular genetic research techniques. Ann started clinical practice in the Denver metro area in 1997. She has worked in many capacities, including walk-in clinics, shelter medicine, general small animal practice and surgery, dentistry, emergency and critical care, acupuncture, and exotics! She completed Colorado State University’s certification program in veterinary medical acupuncture in 2009 and she earned certification in small animal abdominal ultrasound through Oncura Veterinary Partners in 2015. Ann also received an Essential Skills Certificate through the American Medical Writers Association in 2023. In her free time, Ann enjoys reading, creative writing, yoga, and meditation. She lives in Westminster, Colorado with her husband, two children, and four dogs. Ann believes cookies-n-naptime should be reinstated in adulthood! We are so excited to have her on our team!

We are THRILLED to welcome Dr. Alicia Malet to our team! She is currently accepting new clients NOW!

Dr. Alicia Malet is a Colorado native. She received her Bachelor of Science from Regis University majoring in Biology with a specialization in ecology and evolution with double minors in chemistry and math. She then went on to attend Kansas State University graduating in 2020. Since then she has worked as a general practitioner and relief veterinarian. Dentistry is one of her favorite parts of veterinary medicine in addition to pain management, preventative care, and internal medicine. While she loves all animals, tiny dogs have a special place in her heart. She currently has two dogs (chihuahuas) and two cats. In her free time she enjoys reading, playing video games, baking, and enjoying the Colorado outdoors. She is excited to partner with your family to provide exceptional care to your fur baby.
