Operant conditioning plays a pivotal role in the development and teaching of any gundog. It is important to have an understanding of how your dog learns in order to help improve your training sessions and the tools that you use to continue your dog’s progression.
Trust
It is the most important factor in getting your dog to the next level. Without it, you will stall out and not see progress. With it, you can conquer difficult situations that truly test your dog.
Find out how to build trust in the latest blog post. Check that bio!
Day 6
After some minor technical difficulties we are back with more training videos of Shep. Yes, I know the video is blown out, but I guess that’s what you get when filming yourself on a partly cloudy day 🤷♂️
Understudy #2: Kane.
Kane is a 2 year old lab from this side of the pond and is here to work on instilling some basic obedience as well as begin gundog work. This boy is a tank and could probably overpower a rhino if you gave him the chance.
When it comes to teaching basic obedience to older dogs, the same principals and methods used for teaching puppies still apply. Lure, mark, and reward. The overall process may take longer, due to years of bad habits already ingrained in the dog’s nature, but nevertheless progress and success can be had. You can always teach an old dog new tricks.
Everyone meet Max. Max is a 10 month old out of a breeding from . This boy has drive for days. His hobbies include running at top speed, chasing bumpers, and harassing good looking golden retrievers (Ida) any chance he gets.
Max is currently here to work on furthering his obedience and to go through hold conditioning (yes there will be a series for this. As if you didn’t already see this coming.). Give Max some love and hit that little heart. Who knows, he may just send you a Valentine next year if you’re lucky enough.
The one that started it all. Happy birthday Ida Bonita! 🎉
Much like in the uplands, if you’re sitting in a blind on a cold December morning with ducks circling overhead, obedience is paramount. You need a dog that can remain quiet and steady as chaos breaks loose.
Duck dogs also need to spend a lot more time building their memory, since it’s very common to see multiple birds drop in a single volley and they need to be much more proficient at running blinds. Having a dog that can handle and run a blind can be the difference between a 5 man limit and going home with a feeling of guilt in the pit of your stomach.
In the end, the foundation is the same. No matter what you hunt, obedience will always be the key to truly enjoying every hunt you take your dog on. Birds or no birds.
Get out and train!
Day 5.5
This was taken the same day as the previous video, but in a separate session. This is the first time Shep has done any retrieving outside. When working with young dogs, the goal of any retrieving session should be to have fun and keep the dog excited and interested.
Day 5
This is a great example of quality over quantity. When working with a puppy, you don’t need a bunch of long sessions. Puppies don’t have as long of an attention span as older dogs. Something as simple as 5 mins can be extremely beneficial to your young dog.
Knowing your dog’s and your own weakness is vital to success. If you are aware of the inadequacies that you both possess, you can create a plan to address those and stimulate growth. If you allow undesirable habits to creep in, you are setting yourself and your dog up for failure.
Challenge yourself to sit down at the end of every week, day, session and evaluate what went well and what didn’t. What annoyed you and what made you happy.
If you do this, you’ll start to see patterns arise. Identify the problem patterns/behaviors and attack them from a level of understanding instead of out of in-the-moment frustration.
If you’re an upland hunter, you know that in order to have a great dog, you have to master many skills. Obedience is at the heart of any good bird dog. Having a dog that can remain steady and focused in the mad rush of a pheasant busting out of a cattail slough is paramount, not only to your success, but also to your dog’s safety.
Scent work, marking ability, recalling old falls, and being able to run blinds help round out a good dog and take them to the next level.
What do you think is the most important skill a bird dog should have and how do you address this in your training?
Day 4
This was his very first session of heel work. All we’re doing is focusing on getting the timing of the clicker down and teaching him where the proper position for heel is.
Corrections are one way that we as handlers can modify our dog’s behavior. Poorly timed corrections given with an incorrect amount of firmness can lead to confusion for your dog.
Read through the latest blog post to learn more about corrections and how timing and firmness are integral parts to getting your dog to understand what you are trying to tell them.
Link’s in the bio.
The first hunt with your dog isn’t about you, it’s about the dog. Check your expectations and leave your ego at home.
Transitioning from training to a live hunt does not always happen smoothly. Give your dog grace and be patient. As his exposure grows, so too will his abilities as he starts to fit the pieces together.
As dog handlers we are always training and should approach every new environment with realistic expectations. Success breeds success. Enjoy this moment for the beauty that it is.
Get out and crush 👊
Day 3 with Mr. Shep
This was a middle of the day session that focused on “Place”. Despite the wind and the number of distractions vying for his attention, he did extremely well.
