Kentucky Animal Relief Fund (KARF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2001, is a small network of volunteers committed to the rescue and care of homeless senior dogs. Overlooked and undervalued, seniors stand little to no chance of adoption and are left to face illness, loneliness, confusion, and eventual death at the most vulnerable time in their lives. All dogs rescued by our organiz

ation receive veterinary care deemed necessary for health and quality of life. Our goal is to maximize quality of life and to place every reasonably healthy, adoptable dog in a screened and approved permanent home. Unadopted dogs remain in the care of KARF for the remainder of their lives. In an effort to help as many homeless seniors as we can, we also network with other reputable rescue groups. This may include circulating information about a senior in need, taking a senior dog from a local shelter, providing temporary foster care and taking care of any immediate veterinary needs, making transportation arrangements, or providing financial assistance for veterinary care. Our work is based on the belief that all senior dogs are worthy of compassion, love, and a life free from pain and suffering.

A concerning update on Agatha. I found a new mass on her two weeks ago. Since she has a history of mast cell cancer, a surgeon removed three new masses yesterday and they are being tested. She is home and doing well. The cost was $2000. After struggling to figure out what was going on with Bubbles, we took her to a specialist and got the answer we feared. In addition to chronic pancreatitis, she also has Cushing’s disease. With her and Jax, we now have two one eyed Shih Tzu’s with Cushing’s disease. What are the chances. 🥺 Their medication, regular testing and specialty food is quite expensive. If you would like to help us with Bubbles and Jax you can donate with the button below, through our PayPal link:PayPal.Me/KYAnimalReliefFund or send checks to PO Box 58502 Lou, Ky 40268.

KARF welcomes Toby and Maddie. Their dad died suddenly last week and they were set to be euthanized by a family member. Often these are empty threats of manipulation. However, when his mother died he did euthanize her dogs, so we took the threat seriously. They have been together since they were puppies. Toby is an 8 year old Irish Wolfhound mix and Maddie is a 9 year old lab mix. They are still adjusting to all the changes but things are going pretty well so far.

There is so much more to do. My inadequacy is choking me.
This is in no way a plea for sympathy. Please don’t.

Bubbles Update:
Bubbles has proven to be more of a complex challenge than we could have imagined. However, we took her from Louisville Metro Animal Services so it is our obligation to do the best we can until we can’t. We were faced with an eye removal within a few weeks of getting her. Coming to us very emaciated at 7 pounds, she has remained very difficult to feed. Her foster mom must feed her 1 kibble at a time. Imagine the time this takes? She was then seen by an internist, had numerous tests done and was diagnosed with pancreatitis. She has been receiving fluids and low fat food for the past 2 weeks. It is currently managed but she will still not eat on her own. She will next be tested for Cushing’s disease. She is a difficult case, to say the least. We currently owe $6000 for her care. There comes a point when money and logic determine what rescues can and cannot do. There are many other dogs here to be cared for and so many needing help. Sometimes we are faced with deciding we simply cannot fix them. We are now hanging on to hope that the Cushing’s test will give us the information we need to help her. Beyond that, there will be nothing more we can reasonably do. We are so far deep in trying to help her we must ask for your help for her and the others in our care.
We sincerely thank those who have already donated to help her. If you would like to help us with Bubbles you can donate with the button below, through our PayPal link:PayPal.Me/KYAnimalReliefFund or send checks to PO Box 58502 Lou, Ky 40268.

Timmie was finally in well enough heath to have his dental done a few days ago. His liver enzymes are normal and he has gained 5 pounds since he came from Louisville Metro Animal Services, dying from liver failure. He is now recovering from losing 17 abcessed teeth. He’s such a trooper and getting better every day. I’m so thrilled to see his progress. This is what we do best. Press on, Timmie! 🌟

Mickey was yet another who made his way to me from hell on earth, the trixie scamdation, the gulag of despair. It was my best fortune when the original foster home turned out to be inadequate. He then became my boy.
He happily joined his brothers and sisters as if he had always lived here. He was so very easy and loved everyone. He was so gentle it makes me wonder what he endured at that pit of hell. I will never know and glad I won’t.
I’m heartbroken to report his health issues caught up with him. Yesterday he left this world and my life peacefully, from the only home he’d ever known. We said goodbye under the maple tree on his favorite bed, surrounded by love. Goodbye my sweetest boy. I will love you forever. 💔 Our sincerest thanks to Dr Edwina LeMay at A Friend's Farewell.

Hello,
Some happy updates for you today! Bubbles had her eye removed today by Dr Tolar at Bluegrass Veterinary Vision. She is home now with her foster family, ate dinner and is resting. She will feel much better with a few days of recovery. She has medication to manage any pain.
Timmy, who came to us in complete liver failure, near death, requiring two weeks of hospitalization at Shively Animal Clinic, along with additional prolonged home care, was rechecked this weekend and his bloodwork went from off the charts to completely normal now!! He has gained even more weight and is as happy as a clam! After one more bloodwork recheck in two weeks, if all is still well, he will have his rotten teeth cleaned. With the help of our donors and so many others, we have turned their lives around! Our love and thanks to all involved. ❤️ Bright days ahead for them both. ☀️🐶

Bubbles, who was dropped off in a parking lot and made her way to Louisville Metro Animal Services, has had a very difficult time while in our care. It was obvious her eyes were not good. The right has no vision as well as glaucoma. During her brief time with us she also developed a bout of pancreatitis, requiring two days of hospitalization, and a urinary infection. All have been treated. Two days ago she began having trouble with her glaucoma eye; rubbing, squinting, not eating and just wanted to sleep. Thankfully our ophthalmologist worked her in today. It has been decided it is best to remove that eye. This will be done on Monday. In the meantime, her pain is being well managed. If you can pitch in on her enucleation surgery we could sure use it. Thank you to all who have already helped her. ❤️ If you would like to help us with Bubbles you can donate with the button below, through our PayPal link:PayPal.Me/KYAnimalReliefFund or send checks to PO Box 58502 Lou,

Our sweet Timmy, what a trooper this tiny boy is! He came to us in liver failure, required 10 days of hospitalization, came home and still needed intensive care from me. I’m so happy to report he is now a different dog! Many liver values that were off the scale are now measurable, and many that were extremely high are now normal or getting very close! He is eating great and has gained 1.5 pounds, to a whopping 8.5 pounds! He runs like a tiny Bambi with huge bat ears! 🙂 It sure feels good when we can put a win in our corner. They are so few and far between. We take this one full of joy. Our sincere thanks to all of you who helped us save him. ❤️ Louisville Metro Animal Services

Bubbles update:
It took a week but she finally started eating! She’s had a spa day and appointment with our ophthalmologist, Dr Erica Tolar, at Bluegrass Veterinary Vision.
It was determined she has no vision in her right eye, in addition to glaucoma, but her left eye is good and visual. We have medications for her right eye and it will be checked on a consistent basis. She is also now on medication for her heart murmur. Yesterday she moved on to her foster mom Kim Richards. After just one day she has already settled in and is doing very well. Things are certainly looking up for her after being left in a parking lot. Our thanks to all who donated to help us give her the care she deserves. She will get all she needs here. ❤️

KARF welcomes Bubbles.
She is an approximately 8 year old, visually impaired, Shih Tzu. She was reportedly dropped off in a parking lot and somehow made her way to Louisville Metro Animal Services. She has cataracts, a heart murmur and is emaciated. There is much testing we will need to do for her, including a visit to our ophthalmologist, Dr Erica Tolar. We are asking for your help. We have taken in two high maintenance medical cases in the past 2 weeks and it has taken a financial toll. If you can/would like to help us with Bubbles, you can donate with the button below, through our PayPal link: PayPal.Me/KYAnimalReliefFund or send checks to PO Box 58502 Lou,

Thanks and love. ❤️
