We are currently having an outbreak of Pigeon Fever in Oldham County. This disease is typically seen in drier climates, but has been rearing its ugly head in the Midwest as of late. See link below for more information.
Symptoms start with swelling and pain, usually along the lower body wall or pectoral region. We are posting pics and videos of current cases in the comments, in case anyone has a sensitive stomach 🙃. If you have any questions regarding your own horse, please reach out to your regular veterinarian.
Pigeon Fever caused by Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis is a bacteria most often found in the Southwestern United States but reported throughout North America. Outbreaks in areas in which the bacteria had previously not been or only rarely reported have occurred during times of drought.
