Despite our calls for community action and daily diligence to keep pets out of the shelter; we took in 51 pets yesterday.
We have a list of urgent dogs in need of immediate adoption or foster to adopt to save their lives.
There is no official deadline for these dogs but as our shelter fills up, these are the dogs that will be euthanized to make space for incoming strays.

Adopting or fostering any dog over 40lbs at the shelter can help save another dog.
ALL pets will be spayed/neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccines prior to adoption.

If you know Shepherds, you know how sensitive they are. Despite the ferocious stigma, most are big ol' babies.
And Neptune seems to be no different. Scared and unsure at the shelter, he really wants someone to show him the way to love again.

He came in with another dog (EZ Sunday Morning who left for foster to adopt yesterday) "She took the dogs from a man who did not want to wait and stated he would dump them. She took them from him and brought them here."

I'm hopeful someone sees Neptune and wants to give him the love and patience he deserves. He will likely thrive outside of the shelter.

We believe he is about 2yrs old. He keeps his kennel clean. He weighs 86lbs. He has no adoption fee.

Come meet Neptune at Animal House today! Open noon-6pm Sunday-Saturday 3516 Newburg Rd.

"Hi 👋
A very belated thank you for everything you folks do.
Back in June 2021 you picked up a 10 month old lab mix who was sent up to Northern Ontario shortly after. She's been with me since July 12, 2021. Her name is Olive and she's my best bud.
She loves camping, swimming, hiking, and could play fetch all day. She has two springer spaniel brothers, two moms who are obsessed with her, grandparents who spoil her and a whole bunch of aunts and uncles who also love her.
Just wanted you to know that I'm taking real good care of her and giving her the best life possible, which all started with the work you folks do. So thank you, a million times thank you 😊 " Khia

Huge thank you to Khia for adopting a Kentucky shelter dog! This update is everything 😍

Huge thank you to our rescue supervisor, Shannon Riley, for all her hard work sending dogs all over this country and Canada to find homes. Your hard work and dedication is seen. You are appreciated beyond words.

Ugh, this dog... why isn't someone scooping him up? Harrison is urgently looking for an adoptive home or foster to adopt!

He's great with other dogs, kids, LOVES to play fetch (understatement of the century TBH). His hang up? Some lingering medical hang ups we've noticed flare up during stressful times.. but in a home he is thriving!!!

Consider adopting or fostering to adopt Harrison to see if he's a great fit for your family!

"Had a short but sweet field trip today with mister Timotay. What a love bug. We got into the car and all he wanted to do was be with us. Even once he finally settled into the back seat, he sat his front paws on the floorboard and rested his head on the center console just to be as close and as involved as he could.
We started by getting a pup cup from Tiger Sugar and walking to Cherokee Park after. Timotay was interested in all the critters but stopped and waited for pets from everyone we passed.
We went back to the shelter and he got a much needed bath. At first he was skeptical of the water but once the rubbings got involved, Timotay melted like butter. Also got a huge case of the zoomies once the towel got involved.

Timotay is such a gentle Velcro loving boy and I hope he finds his family soon but in the meantime I’ll enjoy all the kisses! ❤️"Adoption Coordinator Alyssa

Come meet Timotay at Animal House or at our Diamond in the Ruff Drag Show event on Saturday June 29th 3-5pm at PG&Js Dog Park Bar

Back from Africa and Amy's first weekend stop had to be to spend time with another lovely adoptable dog, "Meet Ricky Bobby! We had a lovely Sunday afternoon at Yew Dell Botanical Gardens and 3rd Turn Oldham Gardens touring the gardens, hiking the woodland trail and then heading over to the brewery for a treat. Yew Dell has a wonderful program on most Sundays that allows Louisville Metro Animal Services volunteers to take well behaved shelter dogs on a visit. I took Carrie Vittitoe along for the ride.
Mr. Ricky Bobby was easy peasy. He's a 3 year old lab mix on the small side who has a zest for life even though things have been a bit of a downer lately. Ricky Bobby was hit by a car and brought in to . He was roughed up quite a bit with stitches in his ear and one less eye. But this guy is so happy, always smiling, and knows no strangers. I am told he keeps his kennel clean and is probably house trained. He seemed super interested in kids ( although he may knock little ones down; I would suggest over 8 yo) and seemed friendly with other dogs.
He walks beautifully on a leash, was super patient hanging out while we drank a beer at 3rd Turn's Biergarten and was a chill guy. He is neutered, vaxxed, and microchipped and ready to help you in the garden (or drink a beer).
Go see him at Animal House on Newburg Road ."

Animal House is located at 3516 Newburg Rd, open daily noon-6pm, 7pm on Fridays.

Over the last 23 days, has taken in 737 pets. “Stray” dogs are constantly coming in with no open kennels. When one dog leaves for foster or returns home or is adopted, their kennel is immediately filled with another dog.
Our intake lobby is filled with “strays” with no microchips, no identification, and if they have microchips- most owners are not coming back in for their pets.

Every day we are taking in litters of kittens- sick, underage, under-socialized.
Our staff, fosters, and volunteers continue to fight against the tide.
We need our community to take immediate action to help alleviate the burden of overcrowding.

Lost and Found Coordinator Emily shares essential ways to keep your pets safe before & after the upcoming chaotic fireworks:

Before the 4* of July:
• Make sure pets - cats AND dogs - have current identification tags. Writing legibly on a collar/harness may work in a pinch.
Consider microchipping, as a chip can't be lost like a tag/collar could. If your pets are microchipped, is up-to-date.
• Take current photo of all pets.
• If your pet has been in the past anxious on this holiday, consider behavioral therapy to desensitize/ reduce risk of problems. Some pets may benefit from medication (consult a vet).
Ensure environment is sate and secure. Is your yard secure enough to keep your pet contained? Are pasture fences secure enough to keep horses or other livestock confined? Evaluate your options, and choose the safest area, and make improvements where needed.
During July 4th celebrations:
• Leave your pets at home!!
• Keep pets in a safe, escape-proof room or crate during parties and fireworks.
• Keep horses and livestock in safely fenced areas and as far from the excitement and noise as possible.
• If you're hosting guests, ask them to help keep an eye on your pets to make sure they don't escape. Place notes on exit doors/gates to keep you and your guests vigilant.
Keep your pets inside during fireworks!! Turn on the tv or radio to aid in drowning out the sound of fireworks.
• Limit amount of time pets are outside and ensure there's shade, food/water. Never leave pets in cars!!
After:
• Check your yard for fireworks debris before allowing pets back outside, even if you didn't set off fireworks, as debris can make its way into your yard.

🚨 URGENT ‼️
We have taken in over 30 pets today.
We need you to contain YOUR PETS!
We have three (one with puppies) dogs in the lobby. We have just enough kennels for these dogs and no more.

Dogs that have minor behavior issues are being signed on for euthanasia. Once those are gone, we have to pick dogs for time/space.

We need dog owners to KEEP YOUR PETS CONTAINED or another dog will never leave the shelter again.
This is the harsh reality for stray pets in our city right now.

Are these your dogs? Are your dogs missing?
View animals in our care here https://24petconnect.com/LouisvilleFoundPets?index=30&sb=days_MinMax
Come to the shelter before 6PM.
We reopen at noon on Saturday.

7:30PM UPDATE: NEGATIVE FOR DISTEMPER.
REOPENING FRIDAY June 21st AT NOON.

Louisville Metro Animal Services Takes Precautionary Measures Following Potential Distemper Case

LOUISVILLE, KY — June 20, 2024 — Louisville Metro Animal Services (MAS) is taking proactive steps to ensure the health and safety of its animals and the community following a potential distemper case detected within its shelter.
In response to this situation, MAS has made the decision to temporarily close Animal House, its adoption facility, as well as suspend the intake of all dogs until further notice. However, MAS will continue to accept stray cats and stray kittens during this time.
Distemper is a highly contagious viral disease that affects dogs and other animals, leading to respiratory, gastrointestinal, and neurological symptoms.
As a precautionary measure, MAS requests citizens to remain in their vehicles upon arrival and call the number posted on the gate for further instructions.
"We are committed to the well-being of all animals in our care and the community," said Interim Director Adam Hamilton. “Halting intake and adoptions are the best way to ensure animals are safe. While we vaccinate upon intake, not all pets have built immunity. We appreciate the public's cooperation during this time.”
MAS is working closely with veterinary professionals to conduct thorough assessments and implement appropriate protocols to manage and contain the situation effectively.
Dr. Rachel Brown, Veterinarian at Louisville Metro Animal Services, stated, "Our decision to temporarily close intake of dogs is a precautionary measure to safeguard both the animals in our care and the community. Distemper is a serious concern, and we are taking proactive steps to prevent its potential spread within our shelter.”
Updates regarding the status of Animal House and the resumption of normal intake operations will be communicated as soon as available. We ask citizens to follow us on social media to stay up to date with current happenings.
About Louisville Metro Animal Services: Louisville Metro Animal Services (MAS) has a fundamental mission to protect public health and safety, ensure the humane treatment of domesticated animals and provide quality, professional service to the public. MAS serves as an authority in domestic animal welfare by creating and preserving a safe and humane community for both people and domesticated animals. MAS strives to eliminate the euthanasia of adoptable animals in Louisville Metro through education, community engagement, enforcement and leadership efforts.

Our Story

In October 2019, the Louisville Metro Animal Services Animal Care Complex relocated to 3528 Newburg Rd, replacing the outdated Manslick facilty that opened in 1966, and combined all metro animal-related services on one campus. On average, the LMAS Shelter receives an average of more than 7,500 animals annually. Thousands enter the shelter as a result of service requests from the community, the public turning in strays and many are surrendered by their owners for a variety of reasons.

The new home of LMAS is located next to our Animal House Adoption Center at 3516 Newburg Road where you can visit daily to meet adoptable pets. LMAS offers free and donation-based adoptions, and the largest selection of adoptable pets in the region. The Pay It Forward Program makes it possible for LMAS to waive adoption fees for ertain shelters. Approved adopters can adopt any cat, 6 months and older or adult dog that weighs 40 lbs. for free. Every adoption includes spay/neuter, microchi and vaccinations.

View adoptable pets at Animal House daily from 12-6pm, no appointment necessary. If you can’t find a new, furry friend at Animal House, visit the shelter next door to meet more adoptable pets.

LMAS also offers periodic low-cost Rabies vaccination clinics, microchipping for $25 and pet licensing services. Visit our website for more information: louisvilleky.gov/animalservices.
