First of all, let’s talk about domestic koi vs Japanese koi. I offer both to my clients!
I love domestic koi! 1/4 of my personal pond is filled with some absolutely beautiful domestic koi. And we genuinely love all of our children! We don’t pick favorites 😏😏😏

Domestic koi are koi that have originated from selective breeding from the 𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝑏𝑒𝑔𝑖𝑛𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔 here in America. Domestics also include Japanese koi that have been bred with domestic. Domestic+japanese= domestic
They come in all shapes, sizes, and are relatively affordable when it comes to koi. They grow pretty! And at gorgeous to watch! Perfect for hobbyists who want koi for their ponding enjoyment!

Koi from 𝑱𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒏 are generally considered"better than" or dubbed “𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝒈𝒆𝒎𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒐𝒏𝒅“
because Japanese breeders have been cultivating koi for a much longer period, resulting in highly refined bloodlines and a focus on specific quality traits like color, body shape, and skin quality,
Which are not as rigorously selected in domestic breeding practices; essentially, Japan has a much more established and specialized koi breeding tradition, leading to superior quality fish. So. Long story short. If you love koi bc they’re pretty, and that’s where you are in your koi journey- perfect! Domestics might suit you just fine!
But if you want a jaw dropping show stopping “OH MY GOD LOOK AT THAT ONE” koi, Invest in Japanese koi.
They have the 𝒊𝒏𝒌𝒚 blacks, 𝒃𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒅 reds, 𝒔𝒏𝒐𝒘 whites, and better growth rates- and you WILL NOT regret watching them mature into the fabulous monsters they become!

I see so many posts to the extent of “I never put so-n-so fish in my pond! How did they get in there?!” And the answer is always “did you get new plants? Probably came in on the plants.” But some swear up and down that they haven’t and I’m always like 🧐🧐🤨🤨
Well, I’m today years old finding this out!

Avoid sticker shock with this realistic post: this is another company’s work and my own. This company’s price breakdown is JUST for that waterfall system added to an existing pond, and mine is a whole pond system. Both are roughly a $30k price tag. Good to note: in the price breakdown, landscaping, and koi aren’t included. Both of these examples are accurate in price. It’s an investment for sure! But it’s worth it!!!!
