Vultures play a vital role in our ecosystem by cleaning up nature's leftovers and preventing the spread of disease. Two of our fellow Louisville Metro colleagues spent a special day with us at the Zoo recently. Louisville Fire firefighter Mitchell Prather, fresh off last week’s high profile plant explosion and trench rescue, decided to cap his week off by getting engaged to his beautiful fiancé, Louisville Metro Police Department’s Jessica Skaggs, on the Bird Trail last weekend. Skaggs previously worked at the Zoo as a seasonal educator. Thank you for your service, Mitchell and Jessica, and here’s to many happy and prosperous years together!

As we prepare for Mikki and Punch's departure to the Elephant Sanctuary next year, it is important to understand that the knowledge of elephants continues to expand, and the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) standards for elephant care continues to evolve.
