Cool Dog Tuesday!

Miniature Pinscher
History
The miniature pinscher is a miniature version of the German pinscher (not the Doberman pinscher, which was developed after the min pin).
It probably arose from crossing German pinschers with Dachshunds and Italian greyhounds.
In the early 1800s they were developed as a distinct breed called the "reh pinscher," so named because of their resemblance to the German roe (reh) deer. Pinscher simply means terrier.
In the late 1800s, breeders tried to produce tiny size at the expense of other features. In the early 1900s, the trend was reversed and the breed became a slightly taller but more elegant dog, gaining popularity quickly.
Their popularity plummeted around the world after World War I, but slowly regained momentum in America.
The AKC recognized them in 1929.
The min pin is known as the "king of toys."

Scottish Fold
Scottish Fold History
This breed can be traced to Scotland in 1961 when Scottish shepherd William Ross discovered a folded-eared kitten named Susie on his neighbor's farm. Susie's mother was a cat with normal-shaped ears, but the father was unknown.
Ross adopted a white kitten named Snooks from Susie's litter and began to breed her with local farm cats and British Shorthairs to establish this lop-eared feline breed.
In 1977, British geneticist Oliphant Jackson reported that one-third of kittens from the breeding of folded-eared cats developed osteodystrophy, a skeletal lesion. As a result, Scottish Fold breeding in Great Britain came to an abrupt halt. Even today, this breed is not accepted by Great Britain's Governing Council of the Cat Fancy.
Reputable breeders in the United States worked hard to w**d out this gene that causes osteodystrophy and regards it as a very healthy breed.
In 1978, the Scottish Fold earned championship status by the Cat Fanciers Association.

Cool Dog Tuesday!

Miniature Poodle
History
The earliest version of the poodle may have been the barbet, a curly-coated dog found in France, Russia, Hungary, Germany and elsewhere in Europe. The barbet may have descended from Asian herding dogs and water dogs.
The German version of the barbet became the dog we now know as the poodle.
The word "poodle" comes from the German word "pfudel," which means "puddle" or "to splash," a reference to the poodle's ability as a water retriever.
The poodle later worked as a circus performer, military dog, guard dog and guide dog.
The poodle's hair cut originated as a working clip for retrieving in cold water. The hair was cropped close to cut down on its weight and drag, but left longer over the head and chest for warmth. Although it's often claimed the hair was left longer on the joints and tail tip for warmth and protection, evidence suggest that the style arose later, as decoration when the poodle became a performing circus dog. Regardless, the clip became more accentuated over time.
The French aristocracy became enamored with the poodle and adopted it as its own. It eventually became the national dog of France, and to this day many people refer to it as the French poodle, even though it is a German breed.
Smaller versions were bred in France, and by the late 1800s had been perfected. One of these became the miniature poodle.
The AKC recognized the poodle in 1887. Only later did they split the breed into three varieties according to size.
In the 1920s, poodles were so unpopular they all but died out in America. They staged a comeback in the 1930s. They were the most popular breed in America from 1960 to 1982, the longest continuous run of any breed.
The miniature is the most popular variety.

Leptospirosis is a dangerous, and potentially deadly, bacterial disease that can be harmful to both humans and animals.

Leptospirosis damages the kidneys and liver of dogs, humans and other animals, but is only rarely seen in cats. It is spread through the urine of infected dogs, squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, opossums, rodents and other common wildlife.

Vaccination is the best way to prevent leptospirosis. Your dog can become infected by drinking, swimming in or walking through contaminated water or soil, or by consuming wildlife such as chipmunks, rats and mice.

If you ever notice unusual symptoms in your pet, we are here to help.

Russian Blue
Russian Blue History
Despite its name, it is not certain that this breed truly came from Russia.
Pinpointing the precise origins of the Russian Blue has proven elusive. Three theories prevail: the breed came from the Archangel Isles in northern Russia, or it is the direct descendant of the Royal Cat of the Russian Czars, or finally, this breed bravely clung to the shoulders of Cossacks as they rode into war.
It is touted as one the oldest natural cat breeds in existence and among the first breeds displayed at the Crystal Palace in England in 1875.
A few Russian Blues arrived in the United States in 1900, but the true popularity push for this breed did not begin until after World War II.
When the numbers of this breed became low in the early 1940s, some breeders cross bred it with the Siamese. Today, the Siamese traits have been bred completely out.
The Cat Fanciers Association accepted the Russian Blue for registration in 1949.

Fiona's Fun Facts Friday!
There are nine species of Bearded Dragons (all originally from Australia mate) and across the world, the most popular species of Bearded Dragon is the Central Bearded Dragon (Pogona Vitticeps).
Quite interestingly, Bearded Dragons’ backs darken at night to retain heat and during the day lighten to cool them. And if you see them lying on top of each other – it’s not them being cute – it’s a sign of dominance because these “dragons” require UV light to survive – so the higher the Bearded Dragon is on the pile of buddies, the more UV exposure they have access to.

And what’s even cooler is that they have a spot on the back of their head known as a “third eye”. This “eye” has a simple lens and retina and allows the Bearded Dragon to sense predators because it (the “eye”) picks up a change in light.

Stop by and say “Hi!” – I always love visitors!

Miniature Schnauzer
History
The miniature schnauzer was developed from crossing standard schnauzers with affenpinschers, miniature pinschers, poodles and possibly fox terriers and Scottish terriers. Some accounts even include the Pomeranian. They were developed in Germany in the late 1800s.
The breed was developed as a small farm dog and ratter.
The schnauzer is the only terrier not originating from European Isle stock.
The earliest record of a miniature schnauzer is from 1888. The earliest record of one being exhibited in a dog show is from 1899.
The name schnauzer comes from the German word, schnauze, meaning snout, possibly because of the heavy whiskers.
The first miniature schnauzers came to America in 1924.
The standard and miniature schnauzer were at first considered variants of the same breed, and were shown together at early dog shows. They were divided into separate breeds in 1899 in Germany, and in 1926 in America.
After World War II, miniature schnauzers began to grow in popularity, eventually peaking as America's 3rd most popular breed.

Meet the Team Monday:
Katie is one of our beloved client service representatives who has been with us for almost a full year. She can be found at the front desk greeting everyone with a smile on her face, taking phone calls, and leading the way into a room. Her excitement and adoration for each pet that comes through the door is appreciated and apparent. We are so lucky to have such an amazing person on our team.

Some facts about our Featured Member and her Pets:
Charlie (Charles)
· An 8 year old grey and white tabby cat who is Katie’s beloved
baby girl
· She has lots to say and there is never a dull moment when she is
around!
· Although she has a lot of anxiety, she has so much love to give to
anyone she warms up to
· Charlie can be found sleeping on anything even remotely soft,
spying on the neighbors from the front window of her home, and
doing a little shaky happy dance whenever Katie gets home
Wally-
· A 5 year old brown sable ferret who came into Katie’s life after
meeting her partner, Rebekah
· “Wally” is a shortening of the name Walnut, but everyone loves to
make up what it’s “actually” short for. Some names have
included Wallace, Walbert, and Walliam!
· His parents refer to him as a “little menace of a man” whose
favorite hobby is using the floor of his enclosure as his litter pan,
even when his litter pan is perfectly clean.
· His other interests include running around the house and
sleeping in his hammock.
Ali-
· An albino ferret who unfortunately, recently passed away. She
lived a long and happy life in their little family of five. She was
deeply loved and is dearly missed

Caturday Saturday!
Ragdoll
Ragdoll History
Credit Ann Baker, a Persian cat breeder from Riverside, California for developing the Ragdoll in the 1960s. She bred a stray, domestic longhaired white cat named Josephine with male cats she owned. The kittens displayed sweet temperaments, pleasing looks and non-matting coats.
Baker purposely selected cats with the look and temperament she wanted for her breeding program to create the Ragdoll standard now accepted today.
Identified as one of the fastest-growing breeds in The International Cat Association - second only to the Bengal.
After many years, this breed was finally recognized by the Cat Fanciers Association in 1993 in the miscellaneous class.
Today, Ragdolls have earned championship status in all associations except CFA. In CFA, the bi-colors may be shown in the miscellaneous class. The color point and mitted patterns can be registered, but not shown.

With heat waves sweeping across the country, blue-green algae is appearing in new areas and posing an increased risk to pets.

Found in lakes, ponds or any source of standing water, it’s extremely toxic and consuming it can be fatal. The best way to prevent accidental poisoning is to keep a close eye on pets when they’re around water.

If you think your pet has been exposed, take them to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital and contact the ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435.
