I want to say thanks to all of the instructors at Shamrock, a special thanks to Kim for putting these banners together for me. These banners represent many of our first dogs, those that paved the way for where we are today. Our current companions who put up with us and make us smile. We represent a lot of different breeds proving anyone can do this!

This absolutely hurts my heart…… my good friend Caryn Westmeier passed away yesterday at her home.

Caryn is the reason there are Pigs all over Shamrock as she started the agility there for me and always said she could teach a Pig to do it! Our first tire was one she found alongside Reamers road!😂

We go back to 1980 when we both taught beginners classes for GLTC and she had her Golden Emily. Caryn got Beagles, Coonhounds, Rottweilers, shiba inus and most recently Border Collies. Caryn was a good dog trainer, instructor and friend, creative as all get out and always up to try something new. She ran Marathons, walked miles every day.

Caryn struggled with Mental Health issues her whole life and I hope now she is at peace playing at the Rainbow bridge with all her pups. I will miss her.

Please, in memory of Caryn make sure you have instructions for your friends and family as to what happens to your dogs if something happens to you. Her dogs have all been taken care of because of good friends but that could have ended differently.

As far as I know there is no family and no plans for any kind of service.

Some types of blue green algae can be toxic to dogs in tiny amounts with symptoms appearing and progressing quickly.

I have been teaching since 1980, thousands of dogs have passed thru our doors. This year marks 30years at Shamrock! What happened yesterday reminded me of why I still do what I do.

I showed my dogs yesterday at a club I love that always does a great job and has awesome members, Dayton dog Training . I have what is considered non-traditional obedience breeds and to be honest so do most of my students ( with the exception of my Golden gang that I absolutely love❤️)

The sportsmanship showed to me yesterday made me smile, chuckle, and remember why I do this.

Gator WON the rally advanced class of 25 with the fastest time of 100 in under 1 min. You could have heard a pin drop when the class saw an Airedale win! We followed it up with Louie taking 2nd not far behind in time. I can’t tell you how many people came and shook my hand and congratulated me.

THIS,this is what showing should be about, sportsmanship. ❤️

(…and then on the way to the van I heard a lady tell her friend she got beat by an Airedale and a Pug! 😂)Life is Good!

Always be a good sport,we are all here to have fun with our dogs!

For PET OWNERS that take their dogs to lakes and creeks, please read this warning from Morgan & Patrick Fleming.

This morning we thought, it’s so hot! Let’s go to the lake! We took our sweet Arya to the lake and had the best day playing ball and swimming around! About 30 minutes later on the drive home, we noticed her making weird noises and she threw up and pooped in the car. We called our vet on the drive and they suggested we take her in. By this point our girl couldn’t even stand. They told us she was in critical condition so we took her to the ER. By the time we got there, she was brain dead. Today was absolutely awful. We lost our fun, loving, and crazy girl to what we can only assume was a lake toxin such as blue green algae. Arya, no dog will ever replace you in our hearts. We already miss you more than you could know. I hope you’re running around like a wild girl with all the other boarder collies in doggo heaven ♥️

MORE DOGS GO MISSING ON THE 4th OF JULY THAN ANY OTHER TIME OF YEAR!🇺🇸

The end of June is near, and you know what that means….. the beginning of fireworks season.💥 😩 While fireworks can be fun for humans, it can mean fear, anxiety, and danger for your pets.

Please be sure to take measures to keep your pets safe, secure, and calm during the fireworks!

Control Unleashed® Core Concepts with Leslie McDevitt & 8 Other Speakers. On-Demand Conference Presentations.

This special package of presentations from Conference Unleashed 2020 includes seven presentations that cover critical concepts in the Control Unleashed program.

Leslie McDevitt explains how she has refined and evolved the Look At That game since she wrote about it in her original book. She addresses frequently asked questions and provides a new, fun way to teach the game within a broader context of station training. Presentation: 48min., Q&A: 60min.

Eva Bertilsson, Emelie Johnson-Vegh, and Peggy Hogan provide a deeper insight into what start button behaviors are all about. They share their viewpoints on the subject and help you develop procedures that maximize the value of this fascinating communication tool. Presentation: 64min., Q&A: 59min.

Sarah Owings dives into the subject of impulse control. It's still common to see people teaching for what they call impulse control via trial and error. Is it possible to teach dogs to be safe and reliable using positive reinforcement and errorless progressions, instead of negative punishment and extinction? Can we truly teach Leave It without tears? Presentation: 67min., Q&A: 36min.
Dr. Laura Donaldson, PhD explores how CU helps dogs learn enhanced decision-making skills and how CU teaches dogs what she describes as decision rules for optimism. While this concept does not appear in any of the CU books, it insightfully captures not only the crux of what dogs learn when they go through a CU program, but also how the program actually transforms canine behavior. Presentation: 67min., Q&A: 51min.

Leslie McDevitt provides the essential introduction to the why and how of her Pattern Games, which are described in her latest book, Control Unleashed 3: Reactive to Relaxed. Whether you're new to the awesome power of the CU Pattern Games or it's time for a refresher, this is vital CU training information. Presentation: 66min., Q&A: 43min.

Julie Daniels reviews the four steps of CU mat work and then shows creative ways to use it! Taught the CU way, mats and stations have a magical ability to impart feelings of safety, confidence, and optimism about the environment. Presentation: 57min., Q&A: 45min.

Hannah Branigan demonstrates how the power of patterns is not just for the dogs! She explores how to set up a pattern that will help the human part of the team be as clear and reliable as possible. Set up a training session so that your behavior cues your learner’s behavior effortlessly and without pressure. Presentation: 43 min., Q&A: 58min.

BONUS! We've are also including a recording of the Q&A panel discussion that featured Leslie and many of the Conference Unleashed instructors. 92min.

News & Updates

The Board VOTED to modify the Obedience Regulations Chapter 1, Section 34 and the Rally Regulations Chapter 1, Section 36 to change the design and construction of the high jump to allow displaceable panels. In order to not cause an undue burden on event giving clubs, this transition must be completed by July 1, 2025. Clubs may use a high jump with displaceable panels before then, if they should choose to do so.

The revised regulation language is below, inserts will be provided once published.

Obedience Regulations, Chapter 1, Section 34. Jumps, Equipment, and Judge’s Report. The superintendent and the officials of the club holding the obedience trial are responsible for providing rings and equipment that meet the requirements of these regulations. The club will provide jumps that are 5 feet wide. The judge must check both the ring and equipment before starting to judge.

For the safety and welfare of the dogs and exhibitors, the AKC is transitioning to high jump panels that are displaceable. To not cause an undue burden on event giving clubs, this transition must be completed by July 2025.

High Jump: The high jump will be designed and built so that the panels may be displaced without affecting the uprights. The jump will be 5 feet wide and constructed to be set at a height of 4 inches and adjustable at 2-inch increments from 8 inches to 36 inches. The uprights of the high jump will be 4 feet high. The jump will include four 8-inch panels, one 4-inch panel and one 2-inch panel. The jump will be a flat white. The height of each panel will be indicated in black 2-inch numbers.

Rally Regulations, Chapter 1, Section 36. Rally Signs, Equipment, and Jumps. Any jump, or combination of jumps (broad, high or bar) may be used, the jumps may be 4 to 5 feet wide.
