Fawkes had a great time meeting and greeting everyone during National Night Out tonight. This sweet boy is going to be a dream come true for his now owners. He was unfazed by all the sights and sounds and wanted to get in all the trucks 😂 He definitely made me proud.

Getting some good training in with the pups. showing off his charming smile after his obedience session. Loving the ecollar work this boy is doing has really helped him turn a new leaf. Especially when it comes to his attitude and focus while working. 😍 🥰

The same principles go for dogs and handlers/owners as well. Never fret about revisiting foundations. It’s not a step back so much as it is setting yourself up for the next step in the right direction.

Some people find it odd that we spend a fair amount of time working our horses in long lines.

After all, it is not as if we are working with green colts here at the ranch, these are horses 5,6,7 years of age or older, many of which have been ridden for hundreds if not thousands of times. Why take things backwards?

We love our long lines. Sometimes that "step backwards" is the best way to take many steps forward. They serve so many purposes in training not just young horses, but for older horses as well.

Long lines let us evaluate new horses from the ground. They let us see how a horse accepts the bit, how much "whoa" they have and how well they can self balance without them worrying about a rider. When we are first getting to know a new horse, we never want to add more pressure (i.e stuff to learn) than they are ready for. Long lines let us start at square one and build up from there.

Long lines also let us take a step back into familiar, "I know how to do this" territory for a horse that is maybe feeling like we are throwing too much at them. We always want to end our days on a positive note and sometimes, if things have gone all wrong (as they sometimes do!), the most positive note we can find is just a quiet trot in a circle on the long lines.

Long lines can also be a safety net for the humans involved. Young cowboys might like taking big risks on broncy horses, but we sure don't! Young horses, horses come off a long period of downtime or those who have earned a reputation of being "cold backed" spend some time on the long lines before that next ride as a way to get into the "let's learn" mindset. Five minutes of quiet work on the long lines can save a lot of fighting in the arena.

The horse pictured is Unbridled Reed. When we saddled him up this spring, it was both his first ride here at the ranch and his first time under saddle in a year. He started the sessions very "up", inverted and tense and ended it in the nice relaxed trot you see here. That set the stage for a superb first ride with Dale!

Long live the long lines!

Ethics in breeding and ownership are everything.

"Every dog deserves to be born with equal and good innate health by having a natural ability to breathe freely, blink fully, exercise easily, have healthy flat skin, mate and give birth.

"For breeds … where many dogs still have extreme conformations with poor innate health, the public have a huge role to play by demanding dogs with moderate and healthier conformations. Until then, prospective owners should 'stop and think before buying a flat-faced dog'."

Veterinarians are calling on animal lovers to stop buying English bulldogs, because of "major" concerns about their health.

Do you train in the rain? 🌧
Just managed to get this picture of a huge storm front rolling in over Summit Tower Summit Park Blue Ash Ohio while we were out lessoning today. It moved in fast, we were in a horizontal downpour in under 2 minutes… complete with lightning! ⛈ Which means we didn’t stick around to get pictures of the two cute shepherds to post along with this one. We’ll be sure to make up for it next time!
