As a veterinary technician, it is my job and duty to be the voice for animals and advocate for their health and safety.
This is Ollie💜
About a month ago this little guy came into the emergency veterinary hospital where I was working a relief shift. His owner brought him in to put him down.
When this little guy came in, he was weak, confused, and scared. It seemed like he had a seizure, but we weren’t sure. As he sat in the kennel and started becoming more alert, he became frightened and scared. He was very sweet and let me hold him as the veterinarian was talking to the owners. We decided to run some bloodwork. It came back, pretty normal except for very mild increase in liver values. The veterinarian told the owners she could start him on anticonvulsant seizure medication to see if it will help. The owners were not interested and were ready to let him go. The owners did not want to be with him when they put him down. They were ready to leave him there and turn their backs on him. It makes me sad when pet owners don’t want to be with their pets during their last moments.
He was very scared, I could tell he was not ready to go. He was putting up a fight when we were getting ready to put an IV catheter in and was not letting us do it. My heart was breaking. I just had a deep down feeling that this was not right. He still had a lot left in him and deserved a chance. I asked the veterinarian to stop and please ask the owners if they would relinquish their ownership. I could not let this little dog be put down. The owners agreed and relinquished their ownership. I was going to take him to a rescue in Fort Collins, but decided I wanted to keep him.
A situation like this is why I do what I do and why I am so passionate about working in veterinary medicine. Helping animals be safe and happy I believe is my calling and a gift from God. I am grateful I was there at the veterinary hospital that day and was able to help him. I strongly believe Things happen for a reason.
His name is Ollie. He is a wonderful little guy💜💜
