Maybe I can’t handle 14…. These 5 are plenty 😬
A few things we are doing to help desensitize our litter of 4 week old Belgian malinois puppies. What questions do y’all have of these sweet things?
2 1/2 weeks old and already menaces. Lecter (Black) has been loud since the moment he was born. I can’t imagine the chaos this litter will bring by the time they are 8 weeks old 😬
Working on that early desensitization to husbandry like dremeling and brushing, noises, handling, smells, everything we can! I love this stage of development with these sweet babies. So many milestones everyday!
Before atlas came to us he had picked up on the great habit that if he was aroused and there was pressure on the leash, he could redirect to his previous owners to release that pressure. This was at the slightest bit of reactivity to horses, people, dogs, seeing Matt or I, literally anything. After trying on leash a few times with some fun outcomes, we found The best way we can help with this is to work on the reactivity first with separation before we add in the extra trigger of having someone on the other end of the leash. Yes a muzzle will be awesome for when we transition to make sure he doesn’t redirect onto us again, but for now I love making it as easy and fun as possible. He’s picked up on this game and we are slowly closing the gap. Proud of this guy! He is available for adoption through the Malinois and Dutch Shepherd Rescue! #madloveatlas #dogtraining #dogtrainer #balanceddog #balanceddogtraining #reactivitytraining #reactivedog

What I imagine goes through their head while we’re strolling 🤣
I mean, if I have to show them off 😍
✨Truth is…. you don’t. ✨BUT the slat mill is a fantastic way to burn off a lot of energy and work your dog both physically and mentally! They control the speed and as you see, Penny is having the time of her life daydreaming of pulling her snow sled. We’re so excited to have this new piece of equipment not only for our own pups but all the board and trains coming through to! It’s a huge confidence booster and helps so many pups work through their fears!
🐾We love dog parks…. Working outside of dog parks that is. Having a pup who can play with other dogs is wonderful! But have you worked on the other balance of that? The other side of proper socialization is a dog who can learn neutrality around other dogs, especially if they are playing without them. Having a dog who NEEDS to play with every single dog they see creates over frustration on the leash, over excitement with other dogs, and can create a whole lot of reactivity. Challenge you and your dog by working around other dogs without saying hi to them! Working outside of a dog park is a perfect way to do this. Build that engagement! 🐾
✨Sadie has been putting in the WORK. Her first day (well and the last few months) have looked like that: laying down until a dog gets close enough and then lunging, getting up on her hind legs, and pulling through every piece of equipment her mom had tried (harness, slip, gentle leader, etc). Now this beautiful girl has been learning NEUTRALITY as well as appropriate leash manners with equipment that works best for her, a 2.25 herm sprenger prong. It’s incredible what clear communication can do in such a short amount of time. This girl is making us proud! ✨
🐾Intro to Leash Walking🐾 one of the most important things that we can teach our pups is how to follow with the leash pressure they feel: whether that be stay near me, sit, down, go somewhere, or come back to me. We start this with a very easy exercise by allowing Blue to go to the end of the leash, as soon as he hits it I start moving the opposite way and he releases that pressure by following me, resulting in a reward! What this is doing is showing him the tiniest bit of pressure he feels on the slip lead = check in with me. This allows us to communicate without the use of heavy leash guidance! ✨Communication is Key✨
🐾Let’s talk Play!🐾 we love play. Play with dogs, humans, toys, rough housing, even cats (LOL) but what is the best and most important part about play? Taking breaks! Dogs should naturally take breaks in play and have an “off switch” so that things don’t escalate and they have a chance to cool off. One of the most important ways to help that is through a very strong recall. Our pups don’t play off leash in a group unless they have a strong recall because we need them to stop immediately incase anything happens and turn back to us. It also teaches them how to incorporate those natural breaks in play. Rosco and Rhaen are showing how awesome it is when a pup can take a break from play, check in, and then go right back to the fun! What kind of play does your pup like?
🐾Strutting like the best boy through Scheels 🐾 his heeling has improved 10x and it’s so much fun to see his engagement start blooming! #dogtrainer #coloradodogsofinstagram #coloradodogtrainers #balanceddogtrainer
The best progress videos 👏🏻 4 weeks ago Moka couldn’t see a dog 50 ft away without reacting, getting to the point where her parents would avoid all dog interactions (such as taking walks at 3 am) and now she is confidently walking next to Rhaen with no worries. So proud of the work she and her parents have accomplished!
