In late August, a sweet 1-year-old pup named Stevie arrived at NOCO Humane. Severely emaciated and suffering from a skin condition, this puppy had been living a rough life on her own for some time and was in desperate need of love and care.

Stevie had been microchipped, but attempts to contact her previous owner were sadly unsuccessful. She was a very friendly pup with a lot of love to give, but would need to be patient while awaiting her new family.

Weighing in at just 28 pounds, Stevie was well under the recommended weight for her breed and age of 44 pounds. She was placed on a feeding program by our Veterinary Services team, ensuring she gained weight at a safe pace. An examination of her skin revealed that demodex, a mite that lives under the skin of a dog, was causing her fur loss and skin condition. Placed on medication to eradicate the mites, Stevie’s skin and fur quickly began to look healthier.

As she waited patiently over the course of several weeks, Stevie was nearing her healthy weight benchmark and her skin and fur were looking so much better than before! In mid-September, a loving family arrived at the shelter to take Stevie home!

Her new family has told us that Stevie is thriving in her new home, enjoying playtime with the other dogs and loving the company of her family.

“She’s happy, healthy, and so full of life! She greets us throughout the day with her little kangaroo bounces and endless Stevie love. She’s adjusting beautifully to her new home and adores her human siblings and dog sisters,” her family says. “We love Stevie SO much!”

Did you know that getting your pet licensed is the law? Not only that, a pet license is your pet's ticket home. If your pet becomes lost, a license tag significantly increases the chances of a safe return home. (To be extra safe and prepared, giving your pet a microchip is important too!)

For those in Larimer County, NOCO Humane handles the pet licensing and you can purchase or renew at nocohumane.org.

For those in Weld County, regulations vary by municipality. Contact your City for more information.

Additionally, license fees will increase starting January 1, 2026. Fees for animals spayed/neutered will increase from $15 to $17. Fees for animals over one year and intact (not spayed/neutered) will increase from $50 to $60.

Mouse, a brave and resilient kitten, came to NOCO Humane at eight weeks old, seemingly blind. Upon further examination, Mouse was diagnosed with two congenital eye abnormalities: one causing improper eyelid development, which led to painful irritation, and another malformation that resulted in severe glaucoma.

In partnership with CSU's Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Mouse underwent a groundbreaking eyelid graft to save his right eye that still had limited vision, and an enucleation surgery to remove his left eye. This courageous kitty faced his challenges with grace, recovering with a unique look and a new lease on life in his loving forever home.

Mouse's story is a testament to the incredible care and innovation that NOCO Humane and its partners provide, ensuring every animal gets the best chance at a happy, healthy life.

In early October, a very friendly, happy, and energetic German Shepherd named Buffy arrived at NOCO Humane. Being underweight appeared to be her only medical concern, but an underlying condition would spell a long road to good health for this sweet girl.

A few days after arrival, Buffy was enjoying some much deserved playtime outside when she took a wrong step and dislocated her hip. Our Veterinary Services team was quick to mend the dislocation, providing pain medication and a sling to help her heal. Several days later, she dislocated the same side of her hip again, prompting a full radiograph examination.

Buffy was suffering from hip dysplasia, where the bones of the hip joint move more than normal, often causing pain, lameness, and dislocation. The head of her femur was irregularly shaped, and the socket that it fits in to form the hip joint was very shallow. To ensure a pain-free future for Buffy where she would be able to engage in the play activities she enjoys, our team determined that the best course of action was to conduct a femoral head and neck ostectomy, or FHO.

Our incredible partner veterinarians at the CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital stepped in to help and conducted Buffy’s surgery. With no surprise, they did a wonderful job and Buffy’s procedure was a success. Her femoral head was removed, which now allows for soft tissue to create a new joint with the hip. Throughout the course of several weeks, our team worked hard to follow a strict physical therapy plan to promote proper healing. Over time, Buffy began to feel more comfortable using her affected leg, and was able to enjoy walks and playtime without risk of hurting herself.

Soon after, she was made available for adoption, where she quickly found a loving home! Her new family reports that Buffy is doing very well and is a bright spot in their lives!
