India trip post #3
The Dog Temple is a unique sanctuary in Goa, India. It was founded by one woman who still lives on site. The couple who now manages the sanctuary are from the Netherlands. They not only take care of the dogs, manage the facility and the volunteers, but also look after the founder, making it possible for her to age with dignity in the environment where she is happy.

Here is the page for the Dog Temple. If you have a moment, scroll through some posts and get ready to smile!

Home from 2 amazing weeks in India. Observing and meeting street dogs in Mumbai, Pune, Goa, and Delhi was fascinating, inspiring, educational, heartwarming and sometimes heartbreaking.

It was such a privilege to meet and get to know people doing truly selfless work for the good of animals and humans.

"Rescue" and animal welfare look very different in India than in the US. We often think our way is the best and most humane system, but there is so much to learn from street dogs and the humans who are working toward compassionate coexistence.

It's impossible to sum up the adventures and the learnings. If you are interested in some of the work being done in places we visited you can check out websites that will be shared here over the next days/weeks.

This is a long-ago post from 2018. Z-Boy is gone now, but another "tri-pawd" came my way. Don't ever hesitate to give the less-than-perfect ones a chance.

Z-Boy here. My mom and I wrote an article for the Western Border Collie Rescue newsletter. We also included something from my Uncle Sam. Hope you enjoy our story.

Z-Boy (formerly Zeke) came to me as a foster on August 10th, 2018. His life for the preceding 3 months had been one bad thing after another. He was surrendered to a shelter in May and had a bad infection on his back left foot. It was so far advanced that the only option was amputation of the leg. He was in a couple of different foster situations and the second was going pretty well when an unfortunate event landed him in quarantine. He was in danger of euthanasia when WBCR found him.

In May, when Z’s bad luck began, I suffered the heartbreak of losing my BC/Aussie, Dawson. It was completely unexpected and left me utterly devastated. My other dog, a Greyhound named Tuff, had a hard time losing his buddy of many years.

Upon discovering that WBCR was back (happy dance) I applied to foster in the hopes Tuff might do better with a friend.

Sadly on August 20th, just 10 days after Zeke arrived, Tuff suffered a pathological fracture (a break caused by disease that weakens the bone) of a hind leg. Unknown to me or my vet, he had bone cancer. There were no options.

Z-Boy and I needed each other. His presence has comforted me and I believe he is happy and content now. With his intent gaze and sweet disposition, he has won the hearts of my friends and family. He will never be moved from his home again.

My schedule varies from day to day, but walks and multiple games of fetch are top priorities!
Even on 3 legs, Z is one fast fetcher!

The following was written by my brother, who thinks Z is a pretty special boy.

“There are things you go through where you seriously wonder if you will ever be the same. Sometimes you will never be the same; sometimes you're just flat out missing a big part of who you thought you were- but you don't have to act like it. Only you can change who you are regardless of what happens. Z-Boy liked himself with 4 legs and he likes himself equally with three legs. He's never even thought about it changing who he is- a hellaciously fast fetcher of tennis balls!”
