🐴 The "Walk Two Steps and Trot Again" Exercise

This is one of my all time favorite exercises - it is SO useful for horses at all levels.

The young or green horse learns how to keep their hind legs active to properly "sit" in their downward transitions, and how to stay balanced and connected in their upward transitions.

It helps the more advanced horse with increased engagement of the hind legs, opening the door to improved collection.

And of course, to complete the exercise successfully, the rider really learns how to ride their transitions correctly. If the transitions are *not* ridden properly, the exercise will be telling.

The "walk for two steps and trot again" exercise is simply a good test of the foundation for half halts and good transitions for both horse and rider.

Horses teach you so much!

Horses teach you so much!

"Wondering if you should get her that pony, wonder no more!

Riding families have always known horses are good for kids, but now research is proving it. One study, sponsored by the American Youth Horse Council, found that equestrian activities do indeed enhance a range of life skills in children.

The study looked at youngsters involved in 4-H, Pony Club, the American Quarter Horse Youth Association, or the National High School Rodeo Association in one eastern and one western state. Results of the study, published in February 2006, found a significant positive relationship between horsemanship skills and life skills.

If your child likes animals and you’re concerned about that child’s problem solving, goal-setting, or decision-making skills, then definitely get him or her involved with horses."

Written by Ann Swinker, Ph.D. - professor in Animal Science at Penn State University and one of the study’s co-authors.

Why do we work on circles? They help you develop the horse evenly from back to front and they help build the bridge that carries the weight of the saddle and the rider. When riding accurately, they enable the horse to lift the sling which is the apparatus that suspends the trunk to the shoulders and is responsible for lifting the withers to bring the horse off of the forehand. This is crucial for topline development, balance and communication with the horse. (This can not be achieved using a leverage bit).

It can be boring to some but necessary for the long-term health of your horse.

If you would like help working on this, please contact me for a clinic near you or to set up a virtual lesson.

Thank you
