Did you guess the correct diagnosis from today’s story?
A 19-yo FS DLH cat presented for a mass on the right side of the face. An FNA of the mass was submitted to HeskaView Telepathology.

DIAGNOSIS:
Cutaneous mast cell tumor

COMMENT:
Feline cutaneous mast cell tumors may be single, multiple or diffuse. When confined to the skin (i.e., not involving the viscera), feline mast cell tumors are typically benign and complete excision curative, but new skin lesions may arise. Very rare invasive/metastatic variants have been reported. Excisional biopsy should be considered for resolution and further characterization. If multiple lesions are present, thoracic radiographs and abdominal ultrasonography, Buffy coat smear, aspiration of the regional lymph node and bone marrow aspiration should be considered to rule out systemic disease.

Did you guess the correct diagnosis from today’s story?
A 9 yo FS Siberian Husky presented for a slowly growing, 1 cm raised, pink skin mass on the dorsal tail. FNA of the mass was submitted to HeskaView Telecytology.

DIAGNOSIS:
Sebaceous adenoma

COMMENT:
Findings are consistent with a proliferative lesion composed of sebaceous glands and few basaloid cells. Nodular sebaceous gland hyperplasia is a common, benign proliferative lesion. Sebaceous adenomas are benign tumors of glandular origin. Sebaceous epitheliomas may behave as low-grade malignancies, recurring at sites of excision, but are rarely metastatic. Biopsy is recommended for definitive classification.

Did you guess the correct diagnosis from today’s story?
An ultrasound-guided FNA of an approximately 4 x 3 cm, cavitated, left caudal lung lobe mass in a 13 yo MN Persian was submitted to HeskaView Telecytology.

DIAGNOSIS:
Suspected pulmonary carcinoma

COMMENT:
Carcinomas of the lung commonly present as nodules in the periphery of the lung lobes; however, an entire lung lobe may be involved. Cytologic preparations from primary and metastatic carcinomas are similar and cannot be definitely differentiated solely on the basis of cytology.

See how the lab of your dreams can improve patient outcomes...

Melanie is a 2-yo FS mixed breed that presented to her veterinarian for chronic intermittent vaginal discharge. The discharge resolves with antibiotics but returns shortly after discontinuation. Melanie's owners became frustrated after multiple courses of antibiotics and no resolution.

An abdominal ultrasound using the Heska US10 veterinary ultrasound system revealed a mass like lesion in the region of the uterine stump. Melanie’s veterinarian recommended exploratory surgery.

Cytology from Melanie’s uterine stump was uploaded intra-operatively via HeskaView Telecytology for digital pathology review. The pathology report returned before Melanie fully recovered from anesthesia revealing transmissible venereal tumor (TVT).

After months of waiting for a diagnosis, Melanie was able to return home with a targeted treatment plan the same day as her exploratory surgery thanks to Heska’s in-house analyzers.

Did you guess the correct diagnosis from today’s story?
A 12 yo FS Bichon Frise Mix presented for lethargy and anorexia. Mildly enlarged mandibular lymph nodes were noted. Abdominal ultrasound revealed an enlarged, heterogenous spleen and enlarged gastric and sublumbar lymph nodes. FNA of the spleen was submitted to HeskaView Telecytology.

DIAGNOSIS:
Large cell lymphoma

COMMENT:
The presence of predominately large lymphocytes diffusely across the smear in the absence of plasma cell hyperplasia is consistent with large cell lymphoma. Aspiration of enlarged lymph nodes or other abnormal organs could be pursued to determine the extent of the disease, if clinically indicated. Immunophenotyping via biopsy for immunohistochemistry, immunocytochemistry, or re-aspiration for flow cytometry is recommended to help determine prognosis and treatment considerations.

A blood film from a 2 yo FS Jack Russell Terrier Mix was submitted to HeskaView Telecytology.

DIAGNOSIS:
Histoplasma capsulatum

COMMENT:
The fungal elements within the monocytes, background and rarely in neutrophils are consistent with histoplasmosis, caused by Histoplasma capsulatum, a soilborne, dimorphic fungus. Histoplasmosis is probably caused by inhalation of microconidia, which convert to the yeast phase in the lung. The yeast are phagocytized by macrophages. The infection may stay limited to the respiratoy system or spread hematogenously or via lymphatics. Dose of infected spores and host immune status can affect the clinical disease.

See how the lab of your dreams can improve patient outcomes...

Kenai is a 4 month old MI husky that was recently adopted. Kenai presented to his veterinarian for a two day history of lethargy. His new family doesn't know much about him, but they are excited about their new family member!

On exam, Kenai is lethargic for a puppy his age, has slightly pale mucous membranes and loose stool noted on re**al examination. CBC results from the Element HT5 revealed anemia and eosinophilia.

These changes prompted Kenai’s veterinarian to recommend running an in-house f***l test on the Element AIM. Kenai was diagnosed with a hookworm and giardia infection as the cause of his clinical signs and changes on bloodwork.

Because of the clinic's in-house analyzers from Heska, treatment was instituted immediately for Kenai to get him on the road to recovery and prevent the spread of hookworms to his new family, who are excited to get back to snuggling and playing with him.
