Happy Veterinary Technician Week to our wonderful and devoted technicians at Blue Sky! We are grateful to have a team of technicians with years of experience, commitment to their profession and warm compassion for our patients and clients. It takes team work, treat distractions (coffee for techs, Churu and puppy “ice cream” for our patients!) and a fierce love of animals to manage this busy job. Foster Friday: Dog #A143503 in cell block BF09 was a stray female American Pitbull/Terrier mix captured by Witchita Animal Control and dumped directly into an overflowing kill shelter. Two days later her case was reviewed and she was given a euthanasia date just five days away. She was never given a chance to be adopted—she was just locked in a metal cage and left, the day of her impending death written on a piece of paper clipped to the outside of the cold, sterile box where she would spend the last days of her life. But then a miracle happened: some volunteers from Beauties and Beasts, Inc noticed that she was marked for death and they decided to try to save her. A wonderful lady who had been following their page saw her and reached out to us and asked us to intervene... that is how we met our beautiful, determined, soulful girl. We named her Holly—Holly Bloom. It was immediately evident that Holly had been through some unknown traumas. Her tail hung limp between her legs. She made no effort to greet volunteers and seemed genuinely puzzled when someone stroked her fur or scratched her ears. She didn’t play or snuggle or even whine. She seemed to like having human company, but was also confused by it. Shortly after she arrived, she delivered eight beautiful little miniature versions of herself, 5 boys and 3 girls, and that is when we finally began to see Holly decide to fight for her life—and not just for her own life, but for the lives of her babies. She carefully inspected all visitors before allowing them near her precious babies. Gifts in the form of deli meats & chewy treats were offered and accepted, and we continued tasty daily negotiations in our quest to win her trust. Patience paid off & before long she was waiting at the door for us in welcome. Then, when the pups were about 3 weeks old, it happened! Holly wagged her tail for the very first time. Meet Toes. He is helping out with our teaching Tuesdays. But instead of teaching Tuesday is it… TOES KNOWS HAPPY SUMMER! Anytime our pets are enjoying the water we have to be diligent about clearing their ears of excess moisture. Toes knows it's that time of year again so he will walk us through ear cleaning steps.
