A perfect shed is a sign of a healthy snake and good husbandry. While dysecdysis—abnormal shedding— can indicate a more substantial issue, it is often a result of improper husbandry. Western hognose snakes are often thought of as an arid species that live in the desert. In truth, they live in microclimates—diverse climates in general— with decent humidity (30-60%). They primarily feast on amphibians in the wild. Where do amphibians like? Near water! So, it should be common sense that this species will frequent damp areas in search of food. They’ll also eat lizards and small rodents—more readily than their eastern counterparts—but that itself does not mean they like it super dry. To achieve a perfect shed >90% of the time, offer a humid hide. Simply take a Tupperware or similar container, fill it full of coco fiber or other moisture-retaining substrate, and dampen it. When you squeeze you don’t want it to be the Niagara Falls, you just want it to be moist and hold its shape. You can introduce them to the hide, but chances are they’ll find it on their own. This will help get those pesky eye caps loose when they go to shed—really helps with tail tips too!

I forgot to take a picture of the snake before shipping it out, so here’s a larval two-lined salamander (Eurycea sp.) to fill the void. Just want to give a big shoutout to Redline Shipping—and specifically Eliot with redline (idk if he has a Facebook). Each time I ship with Redline the process is is quick, easy, and reliable. Eliot has top notch customer service! I’m sure each member does, but Eliot is my go to now— sorry Eliot 🤣😂. If you haven’t checked out Redline, now is the time to do it. I’ll never ship any other way.

**Larval salamander not for sell— his name is Ralph**

TL;DR: let’s do our part to protect reptiles and amphibians.

With warmer months settling in, our h**p (reptile and/or amphibian) friends will start popping up more frequently. This increases our interactions with them. Many people are curious and want to learn more about these amazing creatures. Oftentimes, this requires us to closely observe (handle) them. Some common oversights are the consequences of us handling these awesome creatures and our presence in their habitat.

Globally, reptiles and amphibians are threatened by human disturbance. According to the USGS, among other sources, amphibians are the most threatened groups of animals on the planet. Beyond habitat destruction, humans play a role in their decline by introducing different pathogens (diseases) to them. Reptiles are not exempt from this. We can/do introduce various parasitic fungi, viruses, and infections to these organisms simply by walking in their territory—and, of course, by handling them.

If you want to handle a h**p be mindful of where your hands and feet have been. Have they been sanitized since your last h**p? Do you have oils or other chemicals on your hand? Did you walk in an area known for diseases that threaten these animals? Simply washing your hands and decontaminating your footwear can make a big difference in the conservation of h**petofauna.

Why this matters? Reptiles and amphibians play a critical role in the balance of our ecosystem. They serve as both predator and prey which contributes to the natural cycle of energy throughout various ecosystems. They reduce disease transmission through the control of pest populations (rodents, biting insects, etc.). They provide aesthetic-value for many people. Finally, they aid in scientific advancements (e.g., snake venom used in cancer research).
