What the FluFf!?
Pet groomers often get asked "Do you know how to groom 'insert breed'?"
I'd love to talk about one of the most common ones we see!
✨DOODLES!✨
For years they've been around, they're coming in every size, with so many different coat types and textures! With such a wide range of combinations, you never quite know the type of coat you'll be working with. We see doodles with those tight poodle curls, doodles with straight coat, doodles with wire coat, and doodles with double coats.
My goal for my doodlers is to give them a style that is cute but REALISTIC for their lifestyle. I say realistic because who really has the time to brush and comb a dog for hours every day after work? If you do WONDERFUL!
How long you leave your pup, no matter what breed they are, is dependent on a few factors
Home Maintaince
Budget
Lifestyle
Coat type
-just to name a few-
I'm a mom with 4 kids and I'd be lying if I said I brushed my dogs every day. Heck, even if I said every week. It's the last thing I think about doing once I get the kids home after a long day at work and running around for sports. Because of this I keep my poodle in about 5/8" guard comb length all over. It's enough fluff so he's cute, but short enough that I don't have to brush on a daily basis. I'm doing my boy about once a month to every 6 weeks if he's not out rolling in the yard.
I find that this length also works wonderful for a lot of my clients. I know we all love that really fluffy teddy bear look, but are we being realistic with how much we would like brush and comb them? Is your family keeping you busy and fluffy is looking like a character from the muppets? Or worse, are they getting matted? The longer you leave your dogs coat means you'll be brushing more, bringing to the salon more and because there is more coat to wash, dry, brush and trim it will cost more. My clients who are getting 1/2" or longer come every 3, 4, 5 and 6 weeks to help with upkeep and maintaining their coats just for an example.
I think this is all important to remember as we go into the colder months. We usually leave more hair on our pets so they're not freezing in the snow, and then we push their appointments out farther thinking that snow=clean dog when really they're needing to come in sooner to prevent any matting from getting wet from the snow. Especially those with the curlier coat type. My pup comes in with those snow clumps because he loves to hide his toys in the snow and dig for them 😂
I hope that some find this information helpful when trying to figure out what look works best for your Doodle. Sometimes it can take a couple of times to really fine tune the look you want, but keeping that open communication with their groomer is so important and helpful! It's great when owners and groomers work as team towards the same goal! Having a cute clean happy pup!
