Be a part of giving back by supporting the Equine Rescue League.

Proper equine care is vital for their health and wellbeing. Being educated about your equines individual needs should not be an option it should be mandatory!

This is one example of how your support enables us to help so many…and

This is Mateo’s story…

Mateo came to the ERL from a very neglectful situation. Most neglect cases are lack of food and poor living conditions. This lovely pony suffered a different kind of torture, he was allowed to overeat and was over fed for years which led to repeated, excruciatingly painful bouts of Laminitis. All of which could have been avoided.

Mateo is 2009 Shetland pony pinto gelding standing 10hh. Upon arrival this pony was in so much pain, he was aggressive and reluctant with any handling or attention from his new caregivers. With our expert team of animal caretakers, veterinarians, and farrier we have watched this pony do a complete 180 degree turn around.

Out of pain now, he is receptive to our questions and eager to please. He has a lovely personality, the one that makes us all fall in love with horses.
Our wish for him is to have his own family who will care for him, train him, and love on him all day long! And just recently that wish came true…

Mateo has gone to his forever home with an experienced horse person who will make sure all his 400 lb. needs are met. We could not be happier for this courageous pony, or more grateful to his adoptive family. Oh, to be so resilient, so courageous, and oh so fine, we salute you Mateo, may you forever be pain free!

Thank You for Helping Us Help Them.

Ways You Can Help!

Today during Give Choose we are going to talk about ways you can help abused and neglected equines.
If you cannot ADOPT—FOSTER! Adoption to great homes brings these rescued equines full circle. Fostering one while they await adoption brings you joy and helps to defer the costs of daily care.
If you cannot FOSTER—SPONSER! Sponsoring an equine covers the cost of feed, veterinary and farrier. It is great for people who cannot own a horse.
If you cannot SPONSER—VOLUNTEER! Volunteers are the backbone of any rescue and shelters like Promise Kept Farm could not operate without them.
If you cannot VOLUNTEER—DONATE! The Equine Rescue League is a 5o1c3 organization, which means your donations are tax deductible. Did you know that $2 per day feeds one equine here at the shelter.
If you cannot DONATE—EDUCATE! Educational programs are a big part of what we do. To find out more of how you can help us help them go to equinerescueleague.org
EVERYONE can do something to help save a life!

GiveChoose early giving begins today!
Did you Know… that the horses here at the Equine Rescue league thrive for several reasons, good veterinary, and farrier care, around the clock expert care from our dedicated crew, and a clean and tidy environment all play an important role in keeping our charges healthy and happy. Most importantly they receive the very best feed and hay. For over thirty years the Equine Rescue League has been supplied with great quality hay and feed from Tri Co. Feeds in Marshall VA. For just $20 you can feed the herd with 50lbs. of high-quality complete feed.

If you wish to donate early, visit https://www.givechoose.org/nonprofits/EquineRescueLeague?cid=0&kw=equine%20rescue&pg=1 It won’t appear on the leader board until March 25 at midnight.

Courtesy Listing: Samantha "Sam" needs a new home. She is a 27 year old beautiful big Dutch Warmblood. She will make for a great companion because she gets along with others, but doesn't like to be left alone. She is not a big fan of the stalls, but does well in a field with a run-in. The only medication she needs is some Equioxx 3 times a week. She is located in Round Hill, VA not at ERL.

You can contact Lucy at 540-554-8877 or [email protected]
if you are interested in Sam. Please share this post. Thank you kindly!

Our Story

Just as there are abused dogs and cats, there are neglected, abused and unwanted horses in the greater Washington Metropolitan area. Unfortunately, facilities capable of caring for large animals are limited.

More than 25 years ago in 1989, while working with humane officers investigating auctions, I personally saw more than 300 cases of horse abuse and neglect in our area in just one year! Unfortunately, even today abuse and neglect continues.

At this and other auctions, old, sick and crippled horses in severe pain were loaded on slaughter trucks facing a long and painful journey or death by trampling when they could no longer stand.

The following month, two colts not even one year old died Christmas Eve 1989 from starvation and exposure as they stood outside with no food or shelter from the cold wind. Their only source of water was a frozen pond.
