The people who currently have him are not able to keep him on their property and the owner has agreed to rehome him due to lack of adequate resources to care for him. He is a sweet boy needing a soft place to live out the rest of his years. Please contact Hanaa at [email protected] for more information.

Season's greetings from all of us here at the Equine Rescue League! The leaves are falling, the seasons are changing, and all the equines here are getting fuzzy from their winter coats! So that means it's time for our yearly Official White House Ornaments sale!

This year's ornament is a lovely anchor design emblazoned with the White House, doves, and poinsettias. White House Ornaments make a great addition to your Christmas Tree or as gifts to friends and family.

When you order them from us 100% of the proceeds go to helping our mission at the Equine Rescue League rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming equines who need our help!

In case you missed it, Daisy Mae is our featured equine this past week for the Clear The Shelters Campaign.

She is a lovely 2016 Jenny donkey standing 13.2 hands. She has a cheerful personality and a great disposition. She is easy to handle and has excellent manners. Daisy Mae will require a pasture area with limited grass especially in the spring when the grass is growing. She is a victim of founder, so her diet must be carefully monitored. She is a beautiful animal and deserves the very best life possible.

Daisy Mae is available for adoption to the right home! If you are interested in Daisy, you can send us an email to [email protected]

The Equine Rescue League was founded in 1990. Since that time, we have witnessed first hand how no equine is immune to mistreatment. From miniature mules to draft horses, unborn foals to 40-year-old mares, from horses of unknown breeding to granddaughters of Secretariat and Northern Dancer, all can....

In case you missed it, our featured equine this past week for Clear The Shelters Campaign is ER Courageous aka Mateo.
Mateo is a 2009 Shetland pony pinto gelding standing 10 hands tall. Upon arrival this pony was in so much pain, he was aggressive and reluctant with any handling or attention from his new caregivers. With our expert team of caregivers, veterinarians, and farrier we have watched this pony do a complete 180 degree turn around. Out of pain now, he is receptive to our questions and eager to please. As shown in this video, Mateo has a lovely personality, the one that makes us all fall in love with horses. With proper handling, care, and training, this brave pony will make someone incredibly happy. If you are interested in Mateo, send an email to [email protected]

Our Story

Just as there are abused dogs and cats, there are neglected, abused and unwanted horses in the greater Washington Metropolitan area. Unfortunately, facilities capable of caring for large animals are limited.

More than 25 years ago in 1989, while working with humane officers investigating auctions, I personally saw more than 300 cases of horse abuse and neglect in our area in just one year! Unfortunately, even today abuse and neglect continues.

At this and other auctions, old, sick and crippled horses in severe pain were loaded on slaughter trucks facing a long and painful journey or death by trampling when they could no longer stand.

The following month, two colts not even one year old died Christmas Eve 1989 from starvation and exposure as they stood outside with no food or shelter from the cold wind. Their only source of water was a frozen pond.
