Our trail camera caught a fox on video during the day! We see them frequently at night, but their activity is variable, so it's not uncommon for them to be out during the day. We believe this may be a gray fox, which isn't quite as abundant as the red fox. What do you think?
Facts about foxes from the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife:
-The red fox is the most widespread carnivore species in the world!
-Red foxes have a reddish coat, black "leg-stockings" and a white tip on the tail.
-Gray foxes have rusty red fur on their ears, ruff, & neck, but the overall color is gray.
-A gray fox has the darkest color extending in a stripe along the top of its back to the end of its tail, shorter legs, and a stockier body compared to a red fox.
-Red foxes have vertical pupils that enhance night vision & help them hunt.
-Gray foxes can climb trees due to their hooked-shaped claws!
-Both are omnivorous, opportunistic feeders. They remain active all year.
-Red foxes prefer when various habitats blend together (forests, fields, orchards & brush), but gray foxes also prefer this habitat. Hawk Valley Farm definitely meets these criteria!
