Today, Dairy Health’s Research Team began day 1 of a sponsored research trial in Severance, Colorado. This time lapse video can show 1 of the 2 milking shifts where our team of mixed Dairy Health personnel, Colorado State University students, and farm personnel collected quarter level milk samples from potential trial animals for laboratory analysis.

Over 1,500 samples were collected (non aseptically) in 3 hours.

Dr. Peter Ostrum and Research Project Manager German Granados recently attended a 3-day workshop presented by Quality Milk Production Services (QMPS) of Cornell University.
Assessing udder health opportunities utilizing key performance indicators for herds and milking parlors provided the backbone of the seminar training. Lower herd level somatic cell counts can best be realized and managed by evaluating the cows, milking equipment, and the dairy employees.
Fine tuning our skills will allow Dairy Health personal to monitor our clients milking centers, dry off procedures, mastitis culture results, and treatment protocols.

Dairy Health’s Research Team started a pen-level transition cow study recently in California. Cows are allocated to a treatment group and followed throughout the upcoming lactation. Health events, milk production, reproductive performance, and economics are our main outcomes of interest in this study period. The data we gather and analyze will help us and our client make transition management decisions tailored to their operation.

On this week’s episode of The Dairy Podcast Show, Dairy Health’s Dr. Mark Thomas with guest Dr. Paul M. Fricke discuss how we can improve dairy cow reproductive efficiency.

What you’ll learn:

1. Embryo transfer and other reproduction technologies
2. S*x semen in lactating dairy cows
3. Practical application of the semen programs
4. Hormone-based programs
5. Advances in dairy cows' reproduction

Efficiency in dairy production depends on reproduction. One of dairy producers' biggest challenges today is overcoming poor reproductive performance.

Dairy management is about both the cows and the people. But how often do we forget the professional development and wellbeing of the people? Motivated staff members are happier, more productive, and more likely to stay.
At Dairy Health we are both driven by and are big supporters of teamwork. Providing a meaning to each daily task along with improving and developing technical skills are keys aspects of the Dairy Health approach. Through on-farm training, we help set engaging goals and share knowledge, so we may all grow together.

We’d like to thank the Cornell Extension for the collaboration 🤝

Dairy Health's research program provides clients with real-world, applicable information to assist in decision making on the dairy, using not only biological but economic outcomes. Trials like this on Selective Dry Cow Therapy (SDCT), provide the needed information to implement new strategies on the dairy. We are proud to work with other colleagues in the field to have such well recognized publications.

Reproductive performance has notoriously improved over the past few decades. One of the main reasons, along with genomic selection in recent years, has been the development and fine tuning of high-fertility TAI (timed artificial insemination) protocols, like Double Ovsynch.

As activity monitors for heat detection are becoming more and more popular, we ask the following questions: Can we compliment the benefits of both TAI and heat detection, to obtain an additive effect? Can we maximize the use of activity monitors, which is very important for farms that have already invested in the technology, without losing conception?

Currently, Dairy Health is working on two large scale, on-farm randomized controlled research trials to begin answering some of these questions with the data collected.

10/21/2022

The relatively neutral World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates published last week, compared to todays Milk Production Report makes us think of a quote from Babe Ruth “yesterdays home runs don’t win todays games.”

This brings up a question. What are you doing to challenge your production system? There is no shortage of ideas, but do you have the tools to evaluate, analyze, and execute? Dairy Health can help you reach your production goals with tools tailored to your specific operation and needs. Our team is equipped with these tools to help you challenge your production system at a Feed, Reproduction, Health, Milk Quality, Performance Enhancement, and Research level.
