Introducing a new born baby๐คฑ๐ป to dogs in the house requires a proper and cautious approach. Ensuring that the dogs have a solid obedience foundation is critical with establishing respect for the parents and baby.
Utilizing a fake baby ๐ผ๐ป that makes similar sounds can be helpful in preparing the dogs for the real babyโs arrival. Additionally, associating the odor of the real baby with the fake baby can be done by utilizing worn clothing and diapers.
Being that this was a multi dog home, I wanted to introduce the concepts of the baby protocol individually. The goal was to have the dogs maintain place while the baby is out in the common areas with the parents. The dogs were also shown that the babyโs room and master bedroom are now off limits when the parents are with the baby. It was also important to introduce the stroller as this is an everyday item being utilized. The end goal was neutrality to the sights and sounds of the baby and respecting personal space. I then brought the dogs together for the lesson.
After the dogs demonstrated proper protocol we then introduced the real baby. This was a very smooth transition and the dogs behaviors did not change at all.
Properly introducing dogs to new babyโs ๐ถ๐ปhelps in creating a safe and harmonious environment for both the baby and dogs.

Dogs can have unique reactions to certain stimuli, such as gunfire, thunder, or vacuum sounds. They perceive the world differently from humans, so scolding or punishing them for showing fear only reinforces their anxiety. However, there is an easy method to desensitize dogs to these triggers.
The "dopamine box" is a simple technique that can help dogs become neutral to these stimuli. It involves using a large box that the dog can stick their entire head into. When the dog puts its head in the box, food is delivered. The name "dopamine box" comes from the fact that food triggers the release of dopamine in the brain, creating a positive association.
To further enhance the effectiveness of the dopamine box, we can gradually introduce slight leash pressure while rewarding the dog for resisting the urge to remove its head from the box. This utilizes the opposition reflex and adds value to the box and behavior.
Once the dog is ignited for the dopamine box, we can start introducing external stressors, such as distant gunshots. While the dog's head is in the box and it is eating, the gunshots ring out. If the dog lifts its head in interest, we do not react or say anything. However, when the dog puts its head back in the box, the game starts again. This process is repeated until the dog no longer removes its head from the box. Gradually, we can decrease the distance of the stressors over time.
What's happening in this desensitization process is that the dog is associating the stimuli with the positive experience of receiving food and dopamine. This helps to rehabilitate the dog and reduce its fear or anxiety towards the stressor.
Here I showed the application with a dremel and blow dryer. Obviously we would focus on one item at a time but wanted to show examples of process.

This is a long one but worth it! I havenโt posted any content of these two dogs at all until today. I knew the transformation was going to be incredible. ๐
I am extremely proud of the progress I have made with these two Dobermans while in my program.
When they first arrived 4 weeks ago, they were overwhelmed by my mere presence and would shut down. They were so fearful and nervous, they would try to run away at the slightest sound. It took a holistic approach to earn their trust and establish a connection with them.
Over time, I gradually helped them overcome their fears and made significant progress. Despite the challenges of them being littermates and not being big foodies, I showed them that I was there to be their person, their master coach. I taught them that surrendering to fear doesnโt make it go away.
Now, these two dogs have the necessary skills to be a part of society and have a balanced life.
They came in as nearly feral dogs, but they are leaving as dogs that I would confidently take to the park or dinner. I am incredibly proud of what they have taught me and of not giving up on them. ๐โ๐ฆบ๐

The tone you hear in the background is to teach timing to human students of when stimulation is being activated.
In this session, low level stim is being paired with already known behaviors being used as negative reinforcement. Once the wanted behavior is achieved, the nagging sensation stops. This teaches the dog that they are in control and can stop the stimulation by completing the wanted behavior. ๐๐ป
