One of the organizations we work very closely with, Kat's Alley Cats, is looking for volunteers! This is a really great opportunity for any who needs some volunteers hours for vet-school or otherwise, loves animals and wants to become a part of something BIG happening in Lubbock.
When I asked Kat to explain a little bit of the volunteer opportunity and what it entails, she said:
"Trapping for TNR (trap-neuter-return) entails working with cat colony caretakers to humanely trap community cats to help them obtain appropriate vetting.
Trappers set baited humane traps at colony locations based on the caretakers’ typical feeding schedule (typically in the early evening). Traps are monitored, and cats are secured in traps overnight.
The next morning, trappers transport cats in traps to a veterinary partner, where they undergo spay/neuter procedures. While under anesthesia, the cats also receive rabies and HCP vaccinations, a microchip, and an eartip (the universal sign that a cat has been fixed), along with any other necessary medical care.
Once the cats have recovered from anesthesia, trappers transport them back to the locations at which they were trapped, returning them to their outdoor home. This process helps keep a colony’s population stable, reduces nuisance behaviors, and also ensures that community kitties live longer, healthier lives."
