Always trust your gut when you know something is wrong! First local vet told the owner that they needed a new trainer to train the attitude out of the filly. Next vet took X-rays and found a broken splint bone that required surgery.

His lips are wrinkled and there’s specs of gray showing through. His eyes are droopy these days and he doesn’t have as much rock to his roll. I can’t say for sure how many times he’s got to watch the sun come up and go down, or how many trips around the sun he’s made. No telling how many miles his big ol tired feet have carried him. Im sure that the amount of times he’s been cinched up at dawn and put up at dusk is probably too many to count. I wish I knew where some of his scars came from—miles of checking fence, shipping cattle, or maybe a fight or two. When you look at him, you know he knows what a hard days work is. Even as he ages, he still gives all he’s got. Sure—it’s not as fast but he gets there right on time for the little boy who rides him now. You see, he never retired as the cowboys who use to ride him may think. He got a new career. A career with a 4 year old little boy. He comes to the fence every day to chat with his little boy and snuggles his nose to him. He totes him around without hesitation and allows him to learn. The horsemanship that he teaches our little boy is more than I could ever have to teach. When our little boy gets in a hurry, he reminds him to slow down. He politely reminds him not to pull too hard on the reins, and lets him slide down the side of him to get off. We thank him each and every day for all he does for us.

This is me telling you to please never skip out on the “old” horse for your kid. That old horse is wise beyond your years. They have seen it all. Been there, done it, got the shirt. Kids need safe and reliable, not young and rowdy.
