✨ Patton’s Progress — Day 2! ✨

Patton is already showing huge improvement when it comes to being caught! When we first went to pick him up, he had quite a few tricks to avoid the halter — ripping his head out, pulling away the moment you got close, and even turning to back up and kick. Once haltered, he felt like flying a kite in a windstorm!

For safety, I left the halter on at first so I could just clip the lead… though even that was a challenge. The sound of the clip alone would send him striking and rearing. Eventually, I had to out-think him — sneaking the lead on from outside the pen with the help of a little hay for distraction.

It’s disheartening to hear that he came from a “rescue” that actually bred his dam and claimed he’d been handled since birth — yet clearly, he’s missed out on a lot of proper groundwork. Even more concerning, he was placed with beginner owners despite his behavior.

The good news? He’s now in the right hands. With time, patience, and consistent handling, Patton’s going to become the respectful, well-mannered gelding his family needs. 💪🐴

Lil Jack’s First Big Adventure! 🫏✨

Today marked an exciting milestone for Lil Jack — his very first walk outside of his pen!

In true donkey fashion, he was a bit hesitant to step through the gate at first. Donkeys are naturally cautious thinkers, taking their time to assess new situations before moving forward. This is one of the many qualities that make working with them both rewarding and fascinating!

Because of the trust we’ve built, I was able to gently encourage him from behind — something I wouldn’t do with most burros this early in training. His confidence grew with each step, even when the shadows from the pen rails looked a little suspicious at first.

The video (sped up from 7 minutes to just 54 seconds) shows Lil Jack thoughtfully processing each new challenge — a great example of how patience and trust create lasting confidence in our equine partners.

Every little step forward is a big win in the world of donkey training! 💪🌿

On Mondays, we fly yearling stallions — straight into lessons on using their brains instead of their hormones. ✈️🐴

Meet Patton, a flashy yearling paint c**t who’s convinced he’s the CEO of the ranch. His go-to moves? Rearing, striking, bolting, and a dramatic moonwalk in reverse when it’s time to be caught. 💃

He’s here to learn manners and groundwork so he can safely head off for gelding and become a well-rounded family horse. By day two, he’s already realizing that cooperation earns scratches — not arguments!

Every young horse starts somewhere, and a good foundation now means a safer, happier partner for life. Stay tuned for more of Pattons transformation into becoming a safe gelded family horse. 💗

🐎 Mustangs vs. Domestic Horses — A Look at the Numbers

Did you know that Mustangs make up less than 2% of all horses in the United States?
While they symbolize the true spirit of the American West, their population is tiny compared to domestic breeds like Quarter Horses, Paints, and Thoroughbreds.

📊 Here’s a quick comparison:

American Quarter Horses: 6 million+

Thoroughbreds: 1.2 million

Paint Horses: 1 million

Arabians: 400,000

Wild Mustangs (BLM-managed & in holding): about 130,000 total

That means there are more new Quarter Horse foals born each year than all the Mustangs living wild across the western U.S.

These small but resilient herds carry the bloodlines of America’s past — descendants of horses that once roamed this land freely and adapted to its toughest climates. Protecting them means preserving a living piece of history. 💛
