Everything comes with a price

A sensitive horse is going to be sensitive to both light aids AND your accidental aids and mistakes

A quiet school horse is going to give you room to fumble with your hands and legs, and they are also likely to ignore them when you mean to use them.

It isn’t fair to want the reward without the price. It isn’t fair to take from a horse without giving- and it all comes down to working on ourselves: our expectations, riding abilities, mindset, and awareness. You can’t have a perfectly performing horse without putting in your own work. A horse is not a computer or a robot- they rise to, or fall to, the level of the horseman.

We want to take this time to thank all those who served and paid the ultimate price… the ones who laid the oath to our freedom and who continue to pay that price for our freedoms that we so often take for granted. I pray we all take a moment to bow our heads in thanks and remembrance of those many who paid that price so we could have the life we lead today… it may not always be the best day or life but at least we have the breathe to breathe and the blessing to start a new day.

Zander got a halter on this week and started on learning to tie. This guy has been different to train but the breakthroughs are very rewarding! Definitely a different process working with a zebra!

DG mustang Sully has a setting back problem we are working on overcoming. We did some prep work before introducing the belly rope tying method. (Only do this with prep work and always under supervision)

He caught on pretty quickly! We will continue this exercise daily as well as working on our spook response while tied.

Just shy of one month glow up on this filly… her name is Phoenix! I’ve not gotten a chance to introduce her yet. She’s a 3 year ld filly my kiddo Lexi gentled a couple years ago then sold. She’s back now to get started under saddle 🥰

Something does not belong… can’t put my finger on it 🤔

Lil stinker… I was working with her in the adjacent pen when she said hmmmm and goes up in slow motion, calculates and pops through a four rail panel… it was one of those… slow motion is this really happening moments? Wouldn’t think she would have fit through but she said hold my beer 🤷🏼‍♀️

The newest wild ones on the block!

Blue roan is a 7 year old gelding from Nevada Wild Horse Range. (My fav hma) and stands around 14 hands according to blm paperwork but I guess he is closer to 15 hands.

Buckskin is a 7 year old gelding from centennial hma! Another hma that I really like! He is said to be 14 hands. I’d say he’s between that and 14.2 hands.

These two will be available down the road….

How's this for a visual you won't soon forgot? This is how much stomach acid a horse's body produces each day. Two standard buckets full.

Why does this matter? Your chosen feeding practices can have a direct impact on whether this stomach acid is beneficial to the horse's well-being, or not.

Horses produce saliva when they chew; the more the horse chews, the more saliva is produced. If horses have access to ad-lib forage (hay or pasture), they will produce two buckets of saliva each day. Saliva serves a few purposes in the digestion process, one of which is to help buffer stomach acid. On the other hand, horses who are fed set feedings, with imposed fasting in between, have greatly limited chew time. They can't produce this same volume of saliva.

The horse's stomach is relatively small, and only lined with a protective coating on the lower two-thirds. Excess and 'unemployed' acid can splash up onto the unprotected top third of an empty stomach, resulting in pain, ulcers, and psychological distress for the horse. Such discomfort is a common cause of aggression at feeding time.

Regardless of the amount of chew time a horse has each day, his body still produces these two buckets of stomach acid - 1.5 litres every hour, 24 hours a day. It is our responsibility as the horse's caretaker to maximize 'chew time', and feed the horse as they have evolved to eat.

What can you do to increase your horse's chew time, balancing out these buckets so-to-speak?

PS - If your horse has metabolic issues, consult with a qualified equine nutritionist to find a hay with an appropriate nutritional profile that can be consumed ad lib.

And watch how you carry those buckets!

Ranger has been one to make me think outside the box in getting him gentled… in part because of his size. He’s really starting to open himself up lately to more and more contact and learning and retaining things better. Here he is learning to tie for the first time 💖 lots of prep work went into getting him here. He didn’t once set back. He was just antsy!

Zander the zebra update! We started our work with me outside the pen just being present while he eats and gaining confidence in that. Then switched to me being in the pen with him doing the same thing. Switching to pursing touching him with the pool noodle got some flight and bit of kicking response, but we have made some progress! Introducing Concho! He is a 7 year old gelding from Fox Hog HMA. Built like a tank! We picked him up towards the end of last year and he has been hanging out waiting his turn to enter the gentling program. Well his time has come! Keep an eye out for his updates! We will be forming a list for potential homes for him…. Be sure and get on it! He’s nice! 😍

Tuna update! If you’ve seen our previous posts she very much struggles with the rope going taunt and holding or pulling around her hind end making ground driving difficult. We have been working on helping her work through this fear and this is part of what we have been working on to get past it! You may notice it’s similar to what we do with foals sometimes in using a butt rope to get them to come off the pressure. Well that’s exactly what this is helping her with! Instead of going into a bucking and spinning fit she’s learning to calming think through it and give to the pressure rather than react and fight! More videos coming soon of her progress!

Tuna has been working on ground driving but one of her biggest struggles is when the lines pull behind her rear she wants to either turn in and brace or turn into a helicopter and kicking the likes. We have been working on some other ground work exercises to help build her confidence in this area. Watch for those videos coming!

An important part of gentling the wild horse is to first teach them to smile! 😉 Holly learning to smile and be an attention hog while I work with others 💗

Pumpkin has been fun but yet very challenging to work with! He has me questioning myself and wanting to throw the towel in some days! But in my soul I know he needs me and even more so me him! He challenges me to think outside the box, to be even more in tune with my own thoughts and emotions. He is pushing me to work on fears (yes I have lingering anxiety after having a horse double barrel me a couple years ago and throw me into a panel) it’s hard to just admit that but it’s been something that certain types of horses bring out…. He is one of those types of horses lol. He has a major reflex to kick, and they’re not baby kicks! He has even struck out at me… All that said he’s making some great progress. Slow is fast with him and we are in no hurry! To see him peeling the layers back piece by piece and relaxing with me and seeking me out is such a reward!

What this pretty girl thinks of being touched on the top of her head 🙊 I just realized I’ve not updated on her in a while! She’s had her tagged removed and then some! Name reveal and more updates to come soon!
