Today’s post is a little different. We have a big ask….but it’s not for ourselves! We have known Katie and her dad, the founders of Layla’s Heart Ranch and Rescue, for almost 3 years. They saved Sinatra, an Austin Pets Alive dog that originally came from our shelter, from euthanasia at the 11th hour when no other organization would help him. We will always be beyond grateful that Sinatra continues to live a happy, healthy life because of them. Today, Layla’s urgently needs the animal loving community’s help! They are having to leave the property they have called home for the last 3 years by the end of the month. The plan was to move to Oregon, but through a series of unfortunate events, those plans have been delayed. Trying to make the best out of a bad situation, they are now moving to another property here in Texas. The land has water and electric hookups, but otherwise is bare land. They need new and/or gently used 6x10 or 10x10 secure dog kennel/runs as well as funds to pay the deposit for a building to house them. Almost every single dog in their care was going to be euthanized at another shelter. They are often the absolute last chance for the dogs they pull to have a live outcome. They have saved dogs from behavior euthanasia from Austin Animal Center, Williamson County Animal Shelter, Austin Pets Alive, and others. They currently have 21 sanctuary dogs (including Sinatra) that are not considered appropriate to adopt out into a “regular home”, but have been given happy lives in a nontraditional, but forever home with Katie and her dad.
Despite the monumental task ahead of them, Katie and her dad just don’t know the word quit. They will not give up on these dogs no matter what. They will figure out a way to make this move happen and will make sure their dogs are cared for, but please, let’s not make them do this alone. In the 3 years we have known them, they have faced so many challenges. Many would have given up. But every time, they figure out a way to keep going. If you have every read a plea for a dog and thought to yourself “if only someone would step up and help them”….these are those someones! They did it and they continue to do it, but they need help and they need it now.
There are several ways to help…
1) Buy new or donate gently used 6x10 or 10x10 dog kennel/runs
2) Donate funds for moving/building expenses
3) Help transport
4) Help put up kennels/prep the new site
5) SHARE this with other animal loving friends to get them more support

These three wonderful dogs have been waiting a collective 2 years and 5 months for their chance to be picked to go to their forever homes. They have all recently spent time in different foster homes and have thrived. Each dog has been described as a low maintenance and enjoyable house guest. We love them so much and we need 3 people to fall in love with them enough to say “that’s the one.” Please share them!

If anyone is interested in adopting Zani, Guinness or Freya, please reach out to us!

We posted the other day that we are at 150% capacity for dogs in our care. We could not be more grateful to thedogslandinghouse for offering to help us by providing 2 week temporary boarding for 2 of our kids to provide us some much needed space relief! Clifford and Freya are so lucky for this opportunity and will get to work on some good dog skills to help set them up for success when adopted! Please show them some love for stepping up to help us!

Asha update!! It’s hard to believe this is the same dog that arrived Saturday afternoon! Her resilient spirit is truly remarkable. Asha’s wound is starting to heal and she’s already gained some much needed weight. She still has quite a way to go to recover from the abuse/neglect she has been through, but she is most definitely on the road to recovery. While she is still shy with new people, she’s starting to show her playful and affectionate side with friends. Things we’ve learned so far….she LOVES treats! She’s a water dog and enjoys hoping in the stock tank pool to cool off! She does well with other dogs…Shiloh is her new boyfriend and they enjoy hanging out in the play yard together! Once she understood she was allowed on the couch, we discovered she’s an expert snuggler and really likes being loved on. Unfortunately but not surprisingly, we also learned she is heartworm positive. How this girl could have been treated so poorly is beyond comprehension. Each day we tell her it only gets better from here on out! A few people asked if she needed anything so we put together a little wish list if anyone is interested in getting her some things that will help aid her recovery and we added a couple of things just to spoil her! The link to her Amazon wishlist is in the comments as well as our website if you would like to donate towards her medical care. For some reason, fb tends to ban our posts if we put links in them which is why the links are in the comments.

And another new intake. This sweet lady was found in the middle of the highway by La Carreta by a Good Samaritan. She now safe at the shelter. She had on a collar but no ID or microchip to help us find her people. If she has a loving family, we need to get her home as we are beyond full. If you have any information about where “Polly” the pug belongs, please message our page or call/text 512-749-5643 or if you are interested in fostering, adopting or rescue tagging if/when she completes her 3 day stray hold.

Where are our folks wanting littles?! Newt (tan) and Niblet (black and tan) are adorable chiweenie-ish brothers that can’t wait to have families of their own! These boys are 9-10 mths old, 12ish pounds, and are now fixed, up to date on shots, and heartworm negative. These cuties will be great additions for a person/family wanting a fun, sweet, affectionate companion! If you are interested in more information or to set up a meet and greet with either of these littles, please message our page or call/text 512-749-5643.

Some days are just a lot. 😞 This precious girl was found at Northside park today. She was dragging a rope that was so tight around her neck it was embedded leaving an ~ 6 inch wound when removed. She’s also skin and bones. Despite the obvious neglect/abuse she has experienced, she has been nothing but sweet as staff worked to assess her, clean and dress her wound and complete her intake. We are calling her Asha which can mean hope as well as happy. We think that perfectly represents where we are starting and where we need to get to. Asha is our 5th intake in 3 days and puts us over 150% capacity. We need help! We need a medical foster or rescue for Asha. We need caring owners to come reclaim their pets. We need people to be responsible and keep their pets contained so they don’t come in to the shelter. And we need fosters, adopters, and rescue help for the 19 dogs in our care with only 12 kennels to house them. We’re doing the absolute best we can but we can’t do it on our own. If you are interested in fostering, adopting or rescue tagging, please message our page or call/text 512-749-5643 (fb messages will be the quickest) and we can help match you to a good fit.

These 2 adorable little dudes are our newest intakes. They were running in the streets and caught by a Good Samaritan who alerted our ACO yesterday. These boys are now safe at the shelter and in their 3 day stray hold. If not reclaimed, these boys will each need a rescue, adopter or foster asap as we continue to have more dogs than kennels. If you have information about where they belong or are interested in tagging/adopting/fostering if/when they complete their stray hold, message our page or call/text 512-749-5643

Back to school is a fresh start for so many, brand new school, classroom, people and experiences ✏️ . It can bring so many different feelings, nerves, excitement and hope 🤍.

Our dogs wanted to join in on the excitement and spread some awareness that dogs need time to decompress in their new home 🏡 just like kiddos take some time getting comfortable in their new classroom 🍎 . Coming from a shelter environment and transitioning into a home can bring lots of different feelings for our shelter kids; excitement, fear, hope and nerves, just like starting a new school year. Give your new foster/adopted fur baby time to decompress in their new environment. The golden rule is 3 days to decompress, 3 weeks to learn the routine of the home and 3 months to truly feel at home. It takes time and they deserve it!

All of these babies are available for adoption! If you’re interested in any of them, please reach out to us!

We’d love to hear from you in the comments: which back to school poster is your favorite and what was your favorite grade in school? 📚

We wouldn’t necessarily say time flies when you are waiting for a forever home, but here we are 1 year later with a new back to school pic of our sweet Zani. 🩷
It’s hard to believe this girl has been with us 460 days. 😞 While this girl needs a unicorn home (only furkid, adult home), she has rave review home notes from friends that have given her foster breaks! She will be an amazing addition to a person/family with her set up…just ask her previous fosters! Zani is long overdue for her happily ever after! Please help us make this her last back to school picture with LAWS. If you have a 🦄 🏠 and considering fostering or adopting, message our page or call/text 512-749-5643. We’d love to tell you all about our special girl!!

Where are our shepherd people?! Freya is a gorgeous 2-3yo German Shepherd. She weighs 65-70lbs and is fixed and all the things. She has been waiting far too long to find her new home (almost 6 months 😳)! Thankfully, she scored a short term foster break last week and it is confirming what we already knew! Freya is great in a home!!! House trained, crate trained, and learned the doggy door easy peasy. Her foster mom says Freya likes to be with her, but can self entertain with a toy or chew and is calm and easy going inside. Freya also likes hanging out in the backyard and enjoys a good game of fetch. Freya has done very well with dogs smaller than her and is learning to enjoy dogs her own size. She definitely has potential to live with a well matched sibling and we will do a meet and greet to help determine compatibility. Freya would prefer a home without cats though. Looking for an easy going, loving, gorgeous lady in your life?! Message our page or call/text 512-749-5643. Let’s find Freya her happily ever after!!

Dutch is seriously one of the cutest pups we’ve ever seen! This sweet, silly boy is 6-7 months old and only 27 lbs meaning he’ll stay on the smaller side of medium. We’re pretty sure he’s going to keep a forever puppy look about him with his adorable underbite and dark brown eyes. He does well with other dogs, but is really all about being with his people…and treats! This boy wants to play hard and then snuggle harder! Dutch is fixed, up to date on shots, microchipped, and ready to jump into his happily ever after! He needs a rescue, adopter or foster asap! If you would like more information about Dutch or to set up a meet and greet, please message our page or call/text 512-749-5643.

Newest intake. He’s absolutely precious and his ginormous toothy grin has us cracking up during his intake photo shoot! “Dutch” was found by a Good Samaritan over the weekend on Hackberry street. They posted on fb and checked with neighbors but were not able to find his owner. We’re hoping we might have better luck. 🤞 If you have any information about where this cutie belongs, please message our page or call/text 512-749-5643. If not reclaimed during his stray hold, Dutch will be in need of a rescue, adopter or foster asap as the shelter is full! So if you are thinking of adding a new fur family member, now’s a great time to come see us!

Wonderful update! Matilda’s vet bill is now fully covered! 🙌 Thank you, thank you thank you to everyone that donated! Any further donations will go towards future vet emergencies (which unfortunately seem to be becoming more common)! We are beyond appreciative for the way this community always steps up to help us help our shelter kids! Definitely feeling blessed!

We want to tell you Matilda’s story and why we are asking for donations to help with her care.
Her story with us starts tragically but stick with us to the end, because we have high hopes for a happily ever after!
Matilda was found by 2 Good Samaritans on Friday afternoon. She was in a container filled with motor oil and was covered from head to tail. She also had thin wire wrapped around her legs. It’s unclear if she got tangled up on her own or if it was done intentionally but regardless, this sweet baby would not have survived much longer if it wasn’t for her hero rescuers. The first picture was just after they pulled her out of the container and untangled her. They cleaned her up a bit and brought her to the shelter. Matilda was very lethargic…she would open her eyes but wasn’t moving and we knew she needed immediate vet assessment. Thankful Southern Winds Veterinary Services agreed to see her even though it was the very end of day. They treated her and created a care plan and she went home with our shelter manager for monitoring and TLC. We were so worried for her initially, then became more hopeful when she started eating gruel on her own when put in front of her, and even more so when she started standing and walking over to eat and drink on her own. Her 48 hr glow up is nothing short of a miracle! This girl went from on the verge of dying to acting like a normal puppy! She’s not totally out of the woods yet and will need continued monitoring for a few more days to make sure there aren’t delayed complications, but so far, all signs are very promising of a full recovery! Her initial vet visit was just over $300 and of course was an unexpected expense for us. If anyone would like to donate towards that bill we would be so appreciative. You can donate here https://www.lawsluling.org/donate.html (please note that it’s for Matilda) or drop it by the shelter. Any overages will go towards future emergencies, but we will also update this post if/when the funds are raised. We picked the name Matilda because it means brave in battle/warrior! We knew she was going to need to fight to survive and we are so proud of how she has lived up to her name!

We are so excited to celebrate Dogust 1 🥳 and treat our shelter kids to an amazing birthday pawty! Since we get a lot of stray animals with no link to their history, we try our best to get a good guess at a dog’s age, however it’s impossible to know exactly when they were born without previous history. We love when our adopting families give their new pups a new birthday, but for those without a forever home 🏡 , this day is for them! We will be making everyone pupcakes, pup cups and would love to give each of the dogs a new enrichment toy/long lasting chew toy keep the pawty going!

If you want to help us celebrate here’s our amazing wishlist:

As always we are forever grateful for all the support and love! ❤️

Thankful Thursday! We are so grateful to our amazing fosters! We posted earlier this week that we were overcapacity and really needed to get some dogs out of the shelter. Over the next 2 days we were able to send these 3 adorable puppies to foster! While these cuties are waiting to find their forever homes, they are getting a jump start on things like potty and crate training and all the other important things involved in learning to home and be a family member! Emmy Lou, Levi, and Ellie Mae are all available for adoption and Levi’s brother’s Stetson and Wrangler are still at the shelter needing a foster or adopter! If you are interested in fostering or adopting any of our shelter kids, please message us here or call/text 512-749-5643.
