Ok, folks, we have Hurricane Dorian swirling around trying to make up her mind where she is going to hit. But hit she will. Will you have to evacuate? What happens to your horses and pets? Now is the time to make preparations. Get your animals' health records together, pet crates, feed and hay, and check out evacuation routes. Valhalla Stables is open to horses from evacuation areas and can provide primitive camping to their owners. Be prepared and stay safe, friends!

We cannot stress enough the importance of working with your veterinarian to have your horse on a good heath care program. And use insect repellent on yourself during mosquito and fly season!

We posted this article on dealing with horses in hot, humid weather a couple of years ago. This year is already a scorcher and we know this needs repeating. Stay safe, friends, protect yourself and your animals.

We talk about the horse, we talk about the rider; now let's talk about that cowboy hat! We all know the name "Stetson!"

We overseed our pastures in winter rye, put out round bales and feed hay in the stalls at night. What have you found works best for you? A good article on the forage needs of horses, especially in the winter.

A horse owner asks if she's feeding her horse hay often enough. Nutritionist Dr. Clair Thunes responds.

Every horse deserves to be loved by a little girl at least once. We are so happy that Beau, in his golden years, has come to us to be loved and adored by his sweet little girl. It is pretty clear the feeling is mutual!

Nothing like a smiling muck bucket crew to shovel out stalls for 18 horses that were kept up out of Hurricane Flo’s winds and rain. We are blessed with only one big tree down and no flooding, not even in the pastures. We pray you did as well. Let us hear from you, friends.

The calm before the storm and what a huge storm Hurricane Florence is going to be. What this serene picture doesn't show is inside all the preparations being made to keep the horses safe and the facility secure. Our prayers are for each of you and all your loved ones. Be safe, friends, and keep us posted on how you are doing.

VALHALLA TRAIL RIDERS: We are once again opening our trails to a very limited (and reduced) number of riders from outside our barn for a yearly fee. We are no longer doing one-time daily rides except as charity fundraisers. If you were a VS trail rider and wish to renew for the 2018-2019 year, please contact us immediately as you are given first priority. After September 1, the few remaining slots are open to new applicants. Because of insurance/liability issues, NO ONE is allowed to ride our trails without the appropriate paperwork on file. Happy Trails!

We REQUIRE helmets on all our riders under 18 but honestly, we wish all of them would wear them. They aren't as hard-headed as they think (well, at least not when it comes to hitting the ground).
