It’s with another heavy heart that I share the loss of Strawberry Shortcake. Her injuries from the bear must have been too much for her cute little self. She put up an amazing fight. She was such a sweet, gentle, delicate, easy going soul. She got along with everyone no matter the pecking order or if you had feathers, fur, or skin. Thank you for being such a good little love with us. We will miss you 🤍🤍

I am so terribly heartbroken by my losses last night. I cant even begin to explain this pain that’s been left in my heart. Everytime I think of the positive that I have my 14 others safe, my mind wonders to the 4 that were brutally murdered and endured a pain I can’t imagine. It’s been almost 3 or 4 years since our last predator attack and I forgot that it leaves you feeling like the biggest heart aching failure alive. I know you all feel my pain because we have all been here in some shape or form while chicken keeping.

Rest In Peace to my babies. I love you. I loved taking care of you. Learning who each of you were. People don’t realize that chickens have personalities equal to a dog or cat. There is a soul, a mind, a heart in there that makes choices, loves, and enjoys life. Each of you were so special and these are huge losses to the Roundup. I’m sorry to have failed you in such a terrible and enormous way. Hopefully you are in a place where pain and fear are nonexistent.

I will have to focus on the 13 who have to mend their broken hearts. Especially Orange Blossom, Radish and Martha Stewart losing their best friends. I will need to focus on Strawberry Shortcake who miraculously escaped from the bear & has a vet appointment later today. The chickens are in our garage while the coop gets repaired, possibly electrically bungee corded, and a good bleaching to deter the bear away.

Lastly, I want to thank you for your messages. I am not ignoring you I promise. I just don’t have it in me to read them and face that shadow of reality.

let’s talk bedding for a sec!! did you know chickens can have allergies?!!

recently we switched from straw to hay… let’s just say that didn’t go so great! the chickens broke out with puffy eyes and lethargy. they weren’t kicking the hay around and we noticed their droppings were just piling up so we found ourselves turning it or cleaning it more frequently. this was over the course of a couple of weeks and we had no idea what was causing it until john remembered we didn’t have their usual straw.

the moment we cleaned it out and put their usual straw in… we had about 7 happy chooks run to the coop and start kicking around! puffy eyes went down in a couple of days! who knew!! we didn’t!!
