I discovered my passion for dog training during my career as a law enforcement officer. With years of experience assisting K-9 handlers, I learned a variety of techniques and tips that have allowed me to hone my dog training skills. Iโve proudly trained Lun
a, my German Shepherd, in search and rescue, working one-on-one with Jocelyn Stohl, a Vermont State Police Lieutenant (Ret.) and the Drone Program Manager with the New England K-9 Search and Rescue. In addition to Luna, my late Rottweiler mix Raja was trained and successfully passed the Canine Good Citizen test upon our first attempt. Her canine good citizen certification allowed us to visit schools and nursing homes on our own, where many of the people that we would encounter would refer to her as an โabsolute angel.โ
Absolute Angel Dog Training was born out of my passion to provide one-on-one dog training services in my community. Itโs my mission to assist all dog owners residing in the Amherst and Lynchburg areas and beyond in relieving their frustration and anxiety of dog ownership through hands-on and in-person training. Through my business Absolute Angel Dog Training, Iโm a strong advocate of least intrusive, minimally aversive (LIMA) training. I believe in providing professional dog training and education in a positive manner that will help bridge the owner/dog relationship. I also understand every dog and situation is different and will adjust training methods to best suit your needs when necessary. Iโm proudly certified through the International School of Certified Dog Trainers, am a professional member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, and a graduate of Dr. Ian Dunbarโs SIRIUS Dog Trainer Academy. No matter the issues you might be facing with your dog, the size of your dog, or the breed of your dog, Iโm confident I will be able to help. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you!
Dog in need of urgent care! Severely emaciated young beagle with infected eye last seen along Cedar Gate Rd between the bridge over the railroad tracks and Clover Hill Farm. Spent 2 hours trying to capture it but eventually wandered into the woods. My friend and I could not relocate him. Animal control notified. PLEASE keep an eye out for him. ๐

Amherst County, Va. โ Mill Creek Lake in Amherst County is experiencing a harmful algae bloom (HAB). The Virginia Department of Health is warning citizens to stay out of the water and to keep their pets and children out as well. The public is advised to avoid contact with the lake until algae concentrations return to acceptable levels. Some harmful algae, called cyanobacteria, can cause skin rash and gastrointestinal illnesses, such as upset stomach, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
People and pets are advised to avoid swimming, as well as other activities that pose a risk of ingesting water. Due to low body weight, children and pets are at greater risk of severe illness if the water is ingested. Activities such as boating may continue with proper precaution in advisory areas.
Algae blooms can occur when warm water and nutrients combine to make conditions favorable for algae growth. Most algae species are harmless; however, some species may produce irritating compounds or toxins. Avoid discolored water or scums that are green or bluish-green because they are more likely to contain toxins.
To prevent illness, people should:
โข Avoid contact with any area of the lake where water is green or an advisory sign is posted,
โข WHEN IN DOUBT, STAY OUT!
โข Not allow children or pets to drink from natural bodies of water.
โข Keep children and pets out of the areas experiencing a harmful algae bloom and quickly wash them off with plenty of fresh, clean water after coming into contact with algae scum or bloom water.
โข Seek medical/veterinarian care if you or your animals experience symptoms after swimming in or near an algal bloom.
โข Properly clean fish by removing skin and discarding all internal organs and cook fish to the proper temperature to ensure fish fillets are safe to eat.
The area to avoid can be seen on an interactive Harmful Algal Bloom map. To lift advisories, there must be two acceptable samples collected at least 10 days apart. District health departments may accept results for samples collected less than 10 days apart at their discretion.
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and the Virginia Harmful Algal Bloom Task Force, which includes the VDH, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, and the Old Dominion University Phytoplankton Laboratory, will continue to monitor water quality in the lake. In general, advisories will be lifted following two consecutive test results with acceptable levels for algal cell counts and/or toxin concentration.
Contact the Harmful Algal Bloom Hotline at 1-888-238-6154 if you suspect you experienced health-related effects following exposure to a bloom.

My annual Public Service Announcement! 'Tis the season for mushrooms to grow in our yards and some can be poisonous, even DEADLY to our dogs. Last year, I posted about how my dog ate a mushroom. The mushroom is pictured here and is known as a death cap mushroom. My vet recommended I induce vomiting, hence the picture of the hydrogen peroxide. So, take no chances! If you see mushrooms growing in your yard, get rid of them and don't allow your dogs to eat them!

Building/reinforcing your dogโs confidence is important! My dog Scooter is overall a confident dog and not scared of much. Here, he was hesitant to retrieve his ball that rolled between the water dish and gate. I think he was concerned the gate would fall if he touched it getting the ball. Anyway, you can see in this video how I encourage him and praise him when he gets the โcourageโ to get his ball. While I was tempted to get the ball for him, I took this opportunity to build his confidence.
