What is jaundice?

Jaundice is the accumulation of yellow pigment (bilirubin) within the bloodstream and body, including the eyes, lips/tongue, and skin. It is most easily seen on hairless or lightly hair areas, such as the inside of the ear.
Along with yellowing color, other signs of illness that may accompany jaundice includes:
- Loss of appetite
- Excess thirst
- Vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss
- Delays in blood clotting and/or unexpected bleeding

Why does jaundice occur?

Bilirubin is the by-product of red blood cell breakdown, and it is normally processed by the liver and removed through the bile ducts and gallbladder. Reasons for bilirubin to increase, and for jaundice to appear, includes:
- Increased destruction of red blood cells (increased release of bilirubin)
- Decreased liver function, such as liver disease
- Obstruction of the bile ducts

Treatment depends on determining the underlying cause of the jaundice. If you suspect your cat is feeling unwell, bring them to your veterinarian ASAP to ensure they receive the treatment needed to feel well again.

Did you know all-seed diets are not the healthiest option for your pet bird?

While all-seed diets can be part of a complete diet, they should not compose the majority of it. These diets often lack proper vitamin/minerals needed to keep your bird healthy and are high in fats, leading to health problems such as obesity, liver disease, and/or heart disease.

Instead, opt for a high-quality formulated pelleted feed is ideal for birds - it provides proper nutrition in a homogenous form so birds cannot pick and choose which portions of the meal to eat. Add in quality leafy greens, yellow or orange vegetables, and boiled egg for further interest and nutrition. Avoid giving excessive amounts of fruit, as these are often high in sugars!

Do you know how many different blood types dogs have?

The answer is over a dozen! The "dog erythrocyte antigen 1" (DEA 1) is the most medically important; dogs that are negative for DEA 1 are ideal for donating blood because it can be used for dogs that are DEA 1 negative OR positive!

There are several other qualifications that a dog needs to meet to be a blood donor - if your dog checks these boxes, considering have them donate their blood. It can make the difference for life or death for dogs suffering from emergencies or severe illnesses!

It's International Day of Veterinary Medicine!

Do you know the roles veterinarians play in your life? While the most commonly known job a veterinarian holds is one caring for your dogs, cats, horses, or livestock, vets do much more! Veterinarians play a part in ensuring the animals and animal products we consume are healthy and disease-free, protect our country from the introduction of harmful diseases, work to protect our wildlife and natural resources, research and develop vaccinations and medications for both animals and humans, and much more!

Proper nail and beak trimming is essential for a healthy bird!

Overgrown beaks can make it difficult for pet birds to appropriately grasp their food, leading to difficulties eating and weight loss. It's important to have your bird's beak regularly checked and trimmed as needed by a veterinarian; do not attempt to trim your bird's beak at home, as there are sensitive nerves and vessels that can be damaged without proper training.

Like dogs and cats, birds should have their nails regularly trimmed. Smaller birds can use human nail clippers, while larger birds require dog nail clippers. This can be performed at home - just take care to avoid cutting the nail too short, as this can lead to bleeding.

Hardwood perches, ceramic, or cement perches can be used to help wear down nails and beaks naturally. Avoid bringing wood from outdoors into your pet bird's cage, as this can potentially introduce pathogens. These perching options should also NOT be the only options available - be sure to supply a wide variety of perch sizes, shapes, and textures for healthy feet!

Did you know... ringworm is not actually caused by a worm?

This skin infection is cause by a fungus, formally called a dermatophyte, and commonly affects young, old, or immunocompromised animals. This condition causes itchy, round, hairless lesions that may appear red or ulcerated. While rarely life-threatening, ringworm can be irritating - and is also highly contagious, for both other pets and people!

If you are concerned about your pet's skin, schedule an appointment with your veterinarian to have your pet evaluated. Common diagnostics include use of a Woods Lamp (dermatophytes can fluoresce under this light), skin scrapes to identify the fungal organism, or fungal cultures to grow and identify the fungus. Further diagnostics may be necessary if your pet has an underlying condition that predisposed them to a roundworm infection. Treatment involves topical and/or oral medications, along with properly disinfecting your home.

The breed of the week is... the Rhodesian Ridgeback!

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is known for its independence and affection; a powerful, athletic hound, the Ridgeback is best identified by the backward facing stripe of fur running along its back. These dogs come in one color - "wheaten", spanning from pale gold to deep red - and have a short, slick coat that requires minimal care to keep clean. Ridgebacks can adapt to most living situations, provided they have moderate exercise daily - including walks, hikes, runs, or participating in dog sports like agility or tracking. Strong-willed and intelligent, the Ridgeback is not for the first-time dog owner as they require a firm but patient hand for training.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback originated in South Africa as a hunting breed, their primary prey being lions, along with other large game in the bush. Developed from a mix of European breeds such as Greyhounds and other terriers, along with the African Khoikhoi dog, the Ridgeback became a proficient hunting companion. Big game hunter Cornelius van Rooyen added of two ridged Greyhound-like females into his pack, and the resulting ridged offspring became the basis for the breed. In 1922, the first breed standards were written for the Rhodesian Ridgeback; using the Dalmatian standard as their basis, the breed as we know today was born.
