DARLA UPDATE!!
Tuesday night I got a call from someone following the story who had FOUND Darla! He said she was in bad shape and wanted to get her to the emergency vet right away, so we met him there asap. He was so so kind to take her in as soon as he found her and got her to people who could help.
When we saw her it was so sad to see the state she was in, and honestly because of her missing fur and wounds on her face, it was hard to tell if it was her. The color pattern was hers, the size, the breed, the beautiful big Darla ears, but it was honestly hard to be certain in that immediate moment. She was very comfortable with us but she was still extremely traumatized and wouldn’t respond to a name.
We agreed to treat her regardless because whether Darla or not, we wanted to care for this pup. After treatment, the news was actually good- she didn’t have too much damage. The trauma to her face was from a stick stuck through her mouth, and they were able to remove and suture up. She’s on all the meds she needs and was able to come home with us that night to begin healing.
The vet, however, didn’t think this dog was as young as Darla. We have her at home loving on her and helping her gain weight as she is just skin and bones, barely able to stand. The more we spend time with her and the more life comes back to her- we only become more convinced that it’s her.
I’m sharing all of this to be transparent, because there’s some chance that Darla could still be out there. At this time, we don’t plan to keep searching. She was found where all of the Darla sightings had been, SO if by some chance this isn’t her, that means Darla was never once seen after she went missing.
I want to thank EACH AND EVERY one of you who have shared, commented, followed, prayed, searched, called, texted, drove around, held the trap, checked in with us in any way. This has been a heart wrenching journey, and we are SO JOYFUL to have her home and to have the chance to help her heal and love her.
In reference to the photos, one is from right after she was found. In the others she is completely shaved because they had to get all of the mats in her fur out, so they obviously don’t look like sweet spoiled fluffy Darla. Now, she has the spirit and heart of a fighter and a survivor. Thank you for getting her home to us. ❤️
