Do you have a puppy? Or are you thinking about getting a puppy? Something a lot of people overlook when socializing/desensitizing is exposure to grooming. As groomers we truly prefer a puppy have at least one visit, ideally 2, to just get to know us and the process. These puppy appointments generally consist of a bath, nails, ears, and a Face, Feet and F***y trim. During these appointments we are introducing a lot of scary things to the puppy. For some, they've never had a bath before. The. There's the blow dryer, brushes, nail trims, clippers and shears. The more the puppies can be introduced to these things before a haircut, the better a haircut can look, and safer it is.

WHAT YOU CAN DO AT HOME:
1. Start crate training. Most Groomers utilize crates, and making sure your puppy is used to them help make the experience less stressful.
2. Introduce them to a blow dryer. The sensation and sound can be scary for the first few times in a new place for them.
3. Take an old electric toothbrush and rub it all over them. This gets them used to the feeling of the vibrations and sounds that mimic our clippers.
4. Start working on body handling. Holding their face, and their feet etc.
All of this sets the pups up for success.

No matter what you are told when you bring a puppy home, please do not wait until 6+ months old for them to go to the Groomer for the first time. There is a critical fear period around this time, and one visit during a fear period could drastically change how a dog views the groomers for the rest of their lives. You can keep the puppy fluff as long as you wish! Visits to the groomer does not automatically have to mean getting a haircut!

All breeds (and mixes) have a puppy coat, and an adult coat. The adult coat generally come in around 6-8 months of age. The transition from puppy fluff to adult coat can matt very quickly without regular brushing (and combing! ) so regular grooming is a must!

The last few weeks, Katie has spent some time donating grooms for the sweetest pups for the Alternative Humane Society.

These guys are going to be looking for their new, forever homes soon!

First up is Scout. Scout is 11 years oldn small mixed breed. He does have some medical needs with his skin that we've been working on, but he's really good with everything!

Second is Bear the Bernese Mountain Dog/Poodle mix puppy who is about 8 months old. He is currently healing from a surgery on his eyelids (which played a part in his fun haircut!) but he's almost ready to go!

Third is Bailey. Bailey is a small (around 25 pounds) terrier(?) mix. She is currently healing from getting spayed and will be available after she's 100% again. Bailey was sooo sweet and good during her groom!

Last, but definitely not least, is Joselyn. She is almost 4 months old and a Maltese/Poodle mix. She is the tiniest little girl and handled her first grooming like a pro! She's got some vetting to do before she's ready to go.

This is what a bath and deshed looks like from start to end! This is a 3 hour process from start to finish.
This big boy is Katie's personal pup Buck. He's 7 weeks out from his previous spa day. His bath took 45 minutes, then 45 minutes to dry. He then got a 15/20 minute break with some fans on him while she cleaned up the mess from the bath. Then comes 30 minutes of brushing and then so.e light trimming to clean him up!

Little Henry here had some bad luck after he got attacked by 2 large dogs resulting in a severely broken jaw. Due to his attack he had to miss his grooming appointment and was way overdue as he was waiting to heal. He is healing but not 100%. Today Katie got him all cleaned up (with a note from the vet stating he was okay to groom) and he is feeling like a new pup!

Things to keep in mind:

Please arrive within 15 minutes of your appointment. If you are later than 15 minutes, you will be rescheduled and there will be a noshow fee

All Pets must me on a leash or in hand, no loose dogs please.

If there are people in the lobby please wait until it is clear before entering.

Please arrive within 30 minutes if your scheduled pickup or from notification that they are ready.

If you appointment is at 1pm or later, please assume that you are the last appointment of the day. We can't leave until everyone has gone home. Kenneling fees of $10/15 minutes will apply outside of that time period if it is not arranged previously.

Pets MUST be at least 2 weeks post any surgery (dental with extractions included) minimum.

If your female is in heat. Your appointment MUST be rescheduled. We deal with many intact dogs, so in season females cannot come.

If your pets have and open or weeping sores, please let us know ahead of time, as we may need to reschedule depending on severity.

And as always please remember to book your next appointment at pickup! We are almost consistently booking out 4-6 weeks. We don't want your pets to have to wait when they are already due!

What do these 3 have in common? Here's a hint, what's in the tub with them? 🦨🦨🦨🦨
That's right. These 3 boys found a skunk who didn't want to be friends! Luckily they already had an appointment to come in!

These 3 dogs make 4 dogs in 2 weeks finding a skunk.
Here's what to do if your dog comes in contact with them:
First DO NOT GET THEM WET! Our first instinct is to rinse them off, but skunk spray is an oil and oil + water don't mix!
You can call us and see if we have room for an "emergency" groom. But the best at home treatment is a mix of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap! We will post the recipe in the comments!

Sometimes life happens and our pups go a bit too long without a proper grooming. I can fully admit that I let my own dogs go a bit too long recently. This is NOT a shaming post what so ever. Our job is to care for your pups in the best way possible. Sometimes that means starting over.
We will never make you feel bad, but we will do our best to educate you so that you can prevent painful matting/pelting.
A good way to ensure that your dog stays Matt free is to brush weekly and have your dog on a regular grooming schedule. For breeds that have longer coats, you will want to have them professionally groomed at least every 8 weeks (some may even need to come in every 6 weeks).
This sweet boy did amazing for the 2 hour shave down done today. He was so patient! Contrary to popular beliefs, we do not enjoy shave downs. It is extremely tedious work and time consuming. It is constantly changing blades so they don’t get too hot, going slow to hopefully avoid nicking the skin, and constant reassuring the dog as the process takes time.
Luckily this boy didn’t appear to have many skin issues underneath the pelted coat, but a lot of times we will find bruising, sores etc…
Let’s keep our pups happy and healthy. We are here to help! Never hesitate to reach out and ask us any questions you may have about grooming needs for your breed/tips and tricks to keep their coat in tip top shape between grooms.

Believe it or not there is a wrong and right way to brush your dogs!

The most effective and best way to brush your dogs is to line brush your dog! This video works for all dogs, but most importantly for all doodle varieties, Poodles, Havanese, and any other hair breeds! Don't get us wrong, this brushing is perfect for other breeds as well. Breeds such as Goldens, Newfies etc will benefit from this brushing as well!

The chart in the video shows the areas to focus on brushing. Start with areas in red, they are the most likely to matt! Then move to the yellow areas, with the least priority being green!

As groomers, we groom a lot of doodles. We also hear "don't poodle my doodle" a lot. But there is a problem with that. Everyone's opinion of this phrase means something else to them. As groomers when we hear this we generally assume that means no Clean face, or Clean feet (aka poodle face/feet). But to some it means not to fully tidy them up. To others it means they want the legs longer than the body. We've even been told that it means to not give them round feet.

So, we want to know, what makes a doodle look like a poodle to you?

These photos are a mix of poodles and doodles!
