Gaze into the soulful amber eyes of Milo! He's a 4-month-old community cat who visited us from Edmonds this week along with his brother, Hank. Now that these floofs received their neuters and vaccines, they will live their nine lives free of tomcat urges like roughing up their neighbors and fathering litters!

From any angle, Xavier is a Big Boy! Xavier is just about 3 years old and weighs 13.25 pounds! He's a pet kitty who visited us from Seattle last week for his neuter and vaccines. Soon his big boy cheeks will be a memory, but his cuteness will remain—and the benefits of his neuter will last his lifetime!

It's that time again: our Lynnwood clinic is in need of towels! This time we just need bath towel size or larger (not hand towels or washcloths--we are well-supplied with those) in good condition with no holes. Since we do not have laundry facilities in our temporary space, we also ask that the towels are recently laundered.

If you have any you'd like to donate, please drop them off at our temporary location (19720 44th Ave W, Suite T, Lynnwood WA, 98036) between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday-Thursday. Thank you for helping us take good care of kitties like Tristan, an FCSNP graduate and big fan of towels!

When your nose liner is on point! This fashionable girl is Kiki, a 7-month-old pet kitty who visited us from Lynnwood last week for her spay and vaccines.

Color-point cats go through color transformations as they grow up and the points on their limbs and faces darken. But their fur is not the only thing that changes. A lynx-point like Kiki can have a black nose as a kitten and a mostly-pink nose as an adult!

TNR fundraiser alert! As You Wish Custom Designs, a metalsmith from Prince George, B.C., is donating part of the proceeds of these cheeky keychains to our organization— and you can see what a great match they are for us!

The shop owner tells us, "Recently I visited the Islands of Hawaii and noticed the amount of TNR kitties with tipped ears there; this inspired me to create three different keychains — "Tip 'Em & Snip 'Em"; "No Balls, No Brawls"; and "Just the Tip." I have previously done fundraisers like these for dog tags, and have raised money for multiple rescues across Canada and the U.S."

Margot brought her magnificent whiskers and ears to us this week from Everett! She's a 7-month-old pet cat who received not only her spay and vaccines, but also a nail trim. Because doesn't every pretty kitty deserve a pawdicure on her spay, er, spa day?

It's been a minute since we've brought you a tux kitty for Big Boy Thursday. So let's remedy that now with Rutherford!

Rutherford is about 3 years old. You may not see the big cheeks here that un-neutered male cats are famous for, but we promise you he is big: 13.25 pounds, to be exact! He 's a community cat who visited us a couple of weeks ago for his neuter and vaccines with a voucher from Community Cat Coalition. He may still be a dapper ladies' man, but he will no longer be contributing to the kitten population!

Our Outreach table mascot, Tippy (often mistaken for a real cat, even by us), had an exciting day at Sea-Meow Convention Sunday. Not only did she meet some lovely cats and even a doppelganger in the form of a purse, she was almost devoured by a Chinese lion dancer! Tippy also got to meet many, many people who visited us to say hello, spin our prize wheel, make donations, and talk to us about spay and neuter. Huge thank you's to Roxie and Sally for volunteering at our table, to Yeowww! Catnip, and to all the people who came by to support our work!

Thank you so much to Rabia for her generous donation of goods last week in memory of her beautiful 20-year-old cat, Moko Annie. Because of them, many community cats will have full bellies soon!

Rabia tells us, "Moko Annie was brought back to the shelter 3 times and my good friend, Margaret adopted her into her forever home for 5 years." When Margaret passed on, Rabia adopted Moko Annie. "I had Moko Annie for 12 years and she was 20 last week when she passed on. What a great best friend she was 💕."

Thank you, Rabia, by remembering your kitty by helping other cats!

It's almost here! Come see us Sunday at Seattle Center Exhibition Hall for Sea-Meow Convention 2024, the biggest cat convention in the Purrcific Northwest! You won't believe the amazing variety of vendors and cat welfare organizations you'll see there. Come spin our prize wheel and chat with us about our mission of spay/neuter!

You didn't think we would leave you without a splendid orange kitty for your Halloween Big Boy Thursday, did you? We would never! This is Leo, who visited us for his neuter and vaccines in September via Community Cat Coalition.

Leo is 4 years old and weighs 13.3 pounds! 🧡🖤🧡When we saw him, he was a tame cat living outside. Being unaltered, he would disappear for weeks at a time. We are hoping now that he's neutered, he’s able to spend more time indoors and not WANT to go outside as much. His crumpled ear is from fighting, and not ear mites—another example of the rough life toms have! Luckily, Leo will be spared some hardships now, as well as never again being the father of any homeless kittens!

You may remember Marie, whose pic we shared last Friday as an early celebration of National Black Cat Day. Well, today we have her brother Megatron to say "Happy Halloween" one day early!

This impossibly cute little guy visited earlier this month along with his sister and their brother Toulouse for their snips and FVCRP vaccine with a voucher from Pawsitive Alliance. No tricks like brawling or unwanted litters will be forthcoming from any of these siblings, and that is a sweet treat!

Oh wow, it's National Cat Day, and could there be a better time to talk about a cat convention? Sea-Meow is at Seattle Center Exhibition Hall this weekend, Nov. 2-3 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and FCSNP will be there Sunday. Spin our prize wheel and learn all about our spay/neuter mission!

This weekend festival of all things cats is back with 80+ cat-themed vendors, 16 cat welfare orgs, kitten cuddle booths (yes!), educational seminars, cat facepaint, henna, cat cosplay contest, and much more. Come join us at the ultimate celebration of cat's meow! As you can see from just this sampling of pics from last year, there is no better place to celebrate cats! 😻

"Hey, whatcha doing? Can I help? Why are you moving that away from me?"

This inquisitive boy is Coconut! He's a pet kitty who visited us from Arlington, WA, for his neuter and vaccines earlier in October. Coconut is 2 years old and he's a snowshoe colorpoint, meaning he has white paws along with his Siamese markings—plus that little white blaze on his face. It's not a super-common coloration, which means this inquisitive guy is special in a lot of ways!

Sunday, Oct. 27, is National Black Cat Day, but we can't wait that long to celebrate, and we don't think you should have to either. And Marie agrees! She says black kittens are adorable and perfect in their own right, and then they grow up to be black cats! What could be better?

Marie is a 2½-month-old pet cutie who visited us for her spay and FVCRP vaccine this week from Snohomish, WA, with a voucher from Pawsitive Alliance. They're a non-profit organization that helps not just black cats, but all cats, and dogs too! With a focus on adoption, spay/neuter, and support for keeping pets in homes, they work across Washington state to help homeless pets find loving homes, and prevent cats and dogs from becoming homeless.

All cats benefit from spay and neuter, but this week's Big Boy is the kind of cat we really, really like to see get their snip! Snail is a free-roaming cat who visited us this week from Edmonds, WA, for his neuter and vaccines. He's about 4 years old and weighs 12.5 pounds!

Snail's caretaker told us they have been feeding him for a long time, and recently saw about 20 kittens running around—probably 3 litters, maybe a month apart in age. "In the future I’d love to get them fixed too. But if you would be able to fix just the one for now, as I think he’s the father of most, that would be highly appreciated." This lady's man is now neutered, and there will be no more of his children forthcoming!

Saved by Early Spay Neuter

Before low cost spay/neuter was available in the Puget Sound area, most rescuers I knew took their cats to their personal vets for spay/neuter. My vet was in his early 60’s and suggested 6 months as the minimum age for spays. I didn’t question his reasoning, but it was neither practical nor in the best interests of kittens to hold onto rescues for months. So I was delighted when Feral Cat Spay Neuter Project opened its doors in the late 1990’s and had weight limits of 2 pounds for boys and 2.5 pounds for girls. Now the lower limit is 2 pounds for both genders at Feral Cat Spay Neuter Project and 1.5 pounds at the shelter clinic we use.

At first I was horrified at the thought of subjecting a 2 pound kitten to surgery. But I warmed up to the idea quickly when my little charges returned from the clinic ready to play and acting as if nothing happened to them at all. The incision size was so small and their recoveries so fast I stopped worrying at all. But the thought of early spay / neuter is still uncomfortable for many.

Is early spay neuter safe?

The American Association of Feline Practitioners, American Veterinary Medical Association, Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and the Association of Shelter Veterinarians support the spaying and neutering of animals as young as 8 weeks of age. According to a UW Shelter Medicine article by Dr. Bridget Holck, “there is currently no research to suggest that spaying at 6 weeks is poses a greater risk than spaying at 8 weeks.”

What are the benefits of early spay neuter?

1. Reduced exposure to infectious disease. The longer the stay in a multi-cat rescue, shelter or foster home, the greater the risk of infection.

2. Faster recovery. Smaller kittens have fewer complications compared to kittens spayed and neutered at over 3 months. The small incision size, reduced amount of fat tissue and faster surgery all play a factor in this.

3. Reduced time in foster or shelter. This increases the likelihood that they will even be rescued at all. Shelters and rescues have limited space and resources. When they are full, they have to say no to new kittens needing rescue.

4. Improved socialization to new home environment. Early spay neuter gets kittens into homes during their peak socialization period.

Recently, a volunteer who fosters for a local rescue criticized early spay neuter and said that she preferred to wait for 3 + months of age. Given my early anxiety about pediatric spay neuter, I understood, but here is the reality. This group of 7 kittens would be growing up feral and awaiting TNR if early spay neuter was not available. And living outside in a high coyote population area, it is unlikely that they would have all survived long enough to be TNR’d. At the time, no shelter or rescue was available to help with fostering and a prior out-of-state committment meant that the rescuer wouldn’t be able to take them at all unless they could get altered and into homes or a rescue at around 8 to 9 weeks.

Even if you don’t like early spay neuter, it is hard to argue that early spay neuter is worse than being homeless and living outside. These kittens will be cherished family members instead of a neighborhood nuisance because of early spay neuter. Independent rescuers and shelters are always limited by space and resources, so early spay neuter gets kittens altered and into homes so more cats and kittens can be saved.
