After arriving to PAWS as orphans, our team safely released several young raccoons back into the wild this fall. While in PAWS’ care, the young raccoons grew strong and independent, ready for life in their natural habitat where they will live as wild animals and thrive! 🦝 Learn more about their story: paws.org/PatientSpotlight

This summer, the PAWS Wildlife Rehabilitation Center received a clutch of three orphaned Barn Swallows. The three swallows arrived thin with some minor feather contamination, but otherwise without injury. They proceeded through the bird nursery with minimal issues and were then moved to a larger outdoor enclosure for flight conditioning and acclimation. This video shows the birds’ first day in one of the outdoor enclosures as we began acclimating them to a larger space. All three of these birds were safely released back into the wild!
Did you know?
🔸Barn Swallows are the world’s most widely distributed songbird!
🔸Barn Swallows often build their nests near Osprey, benefiting from the Osprey’s protective nature. Reportedly, Osprey will react and respond to Barn Swallow alarm calls acknowledging a predator is in the area.
🔸Fun fact: Real-life sailors and pirates often tattooed swallows to signify their long nautical journeys in reference to the extraordinary migratory distances of the swallow. You might have seen Jack Sparrow sporting one of these in the movie, Pirates of the Caribbean!

PART 2: The veterinary team recently checked the progress of the juvenile Glaucous-winged gull with the broken wing!
The wildlife team is cautiously optimistic about this patient’s eventual recovery and possible return to the wild. Subsequent check-ups will hopefully indicate continued progress! 👏 In the meantime, the rehabilitation team must provide all the young gulls with species-appropriate nutrition and maintain a clean, quiet and secure environment where they can continue developing into healthy adult birds! 🦢

PAWS Wildlife Rehabilitation Center recently admitted this juvenile Glaucous-winged gull for treatment and rehabilitation. 🩺
The young gull was injured in a fall from its rooftop nest in downtown Seattle. Unfortunately, the large bird sustained several fractures upon impact and only survived thanks to a concerned member of the public who brought it to PAWS for care.
The wildlife team has admitted many young Glaucous-winged gulls this season with similar stories. Gulls naturally nest on offshore islands but opportunistically utilize human-made structures such as rooftops and wharves. Although these locations seem secure to gull parents, they often lose precocious chicks who fall to the ground and are unable to hop or fly back up.
If you see a gull on the ground that may need help, call our PAWS Wildlife Rehabilitation Center at (425) 412-4040 for assistance! 📞

Six orphaned bobcat kittens were admitted to PAWS Wildlife Rehabilitation Center last year and remained in care until they were old enough to return to the wild. 🌲
These obligate carnivores must ambush wild prey to survive. Bobcat kittens spend their first year of life learning these skills alongside their mothers before dispersing into territories of their own. The PAWS Wildlife Rehabilitation Center staff provides young bobcats with species-appropriate diets and enrichment so they can develop the skills and strength needed to survive on their own, all while minimizing their exposure to humans!
These video clips show how we relocated the bobcats to our new facility in Snohomish where they completed the last stage of rehabilitation before release! 🐾
